True, they are kind of like boobs. Every one obsesses about them at some point in their life, but after awhile, you realize while they are cool they are not as cool as you once thought they where, but still cool enough to keep around. Cuz what kind of life would we have if there where no boobs, or guns?

Thats why I want an older West German, not the stuff that is being put out over the last few years.

Glocks rep isn't perfect either. They have the highest rate of reported catastrophic explosive failures of any big brand name supposedly great handung out there.

Almost all gun companies are cutting corners to reduce cost these days, and quality control is one of the first things to suffer. Damn shame.

You can still get some very well made guns from sig glock and others, theres just the chance of getting a lemon with some issues. If you get one that runs reliably and doesn't have any issues, there is no reason to think it won't continue to do so.

There are several fairly recent production sig pistols that have had well over a million documented rounds through them, and I'm sure a bunch of others in military use that have close to that much without anyone counting.

Anyways, heres what I came here to post, the most fucked over "modification" I've ever seen, its a damn shame.

    The original looked like this:

    And heres the end result.

Gunna have a hard time selling that thing as a 30lb+ shoulder fired rifle to anyone but Andre the Giant. The pump action thing for firing blanks is a retarded addition to an already heavy and oversized semi auto.

I had a sig 40. The slide release pin would start to wiggle it's way out after 200 rounds! Scary.

I replaced it with a glock 19. Hated that too, shoots like shit, feels like a toy. Double stack compact makes no sense either.

Give me a good wheel gun anyday, with the exception of a "good" 1911. I love my kimber, but my 686 hammers nails like no other at 25 yrds.

No, its a meduim machine gun chambered for 7.62x54R. Similar to NATO medium machine guns chambered for 7.62x51. (MG3, M60 etc...)

14.5mm is pretty pretty much the Russian version of a .50.

Think you're thinking of the DShK in 12.7.

And I fucked up, 12.7 is the Soviet/Russian .50 equivalent. 14.5 is an anti-aircraft/material round.

I'll PM ya re stuff soon....

Those are all real conversions. Beltfed handguns are cool.

The only vaporware beltfed conversion out there is the Shrike by Ares Defense. Many folks, including myself, have a $1k deposit on one, and only a handfull have been delivered in the past 6 years.

There is also a Lakeside .22 conversion for the AR-15/M-16 that is pretty cool.

I'm just kinda stoked and feel the need to share with anyone that will listen. I've had my Sig 556 for a while now, but just finally spent the money to put an el cheapo scope on it so I could really test its accuracy. Well, turns out its a pretty damn good shooter.

    Heres the gun

And a nice view from my local public range taken this spring

My best two 5 shot groups at 50 yards. The bore was hot and hadn't been cleaned in a long time.

I've heard some people have had some problems with their 556's but mine has been 100% reliable, not a single malf, and is accurate, comfortable, and just all around badass. I am NEVER selling this thing.

Now all it needs is to someday get an actual decent scope on it instead of the heavy cheap millet.

    Gun for the wife?

So after living in small, idyllic ski town for years we now live in a giant, not so idyllic, ski metropolis of the PNW, in a not so nice neighborhood to boot. After getting minorly stalked, followed, and generally creeped out a couple times the wife is ready to start packing some heat w/ a CCW permit of course.

I grew up around guns in the dirty south so I'm of the opinion that bigger is better, maybe a .38. She's interested in like a .22 revolver, something real small and light. Any thoughts, suggestions on this? Maybe a 22 magnum instead of LR?

I was thinking of picking up just like an inexpensive 22 rifle first to get her familiar w/ shooting, safety etc. Then maybe she could take a class as well. Then get her to pick out her handgun herself when she knows a little more. WWMD?

And sorry guys (and girls), no pics. But nice try in advance.

    Thanks!!

Leroy, any take on the new Ruger 556. It is around the same price as the sig and uses a gas piston also. I just read about it in the new American Rifleman (NRA magazine). I had my sights on the Sig classic with the folding stock but I have not read of any head to head comparisons. Sigs usually beat Rugers in my opinion.

First off - I'd get the .22 rifle anyway. Everybody should have one of those - they're lotsa fun. Second - for a handgun I'd go with a compact .357 mag revolver. She can always shoot .38 with it and revolvers are much easier for the unfamiliar to "figure out".

    Hey Ncog,

I was in fisherman's a few weeks ago and had the same question asked to me by a female shopper looking for the same type of weapon. What I and the store specialist recommended was something light, but absolutely something with enough power that it will fulfill it intended use, stopping an attacker. Sure 22s are light, but when it comes to stopping a pcp loaded rapist, it won't be enough. A .38 is another light option but its still questionable on the power side. I would recommend a sub-compact 9mm to anybody, but first save that money on the 22 lr and take her to an indoor range where you can shoot several handguns, and she'll likely be more comfortable than she thought with a slightly larger gun.

Thanks the advice. That's kind of what I was thinking about the .22 rifle. More of an excuse for me to get one. I haven't owned one since I was a kid and it would be fun to shoot some cans once in while. Plus in the off chance that a rabid squirrell was trying to invade my home I wouldn't want to have to use the 12 gauge. Any rec's?

I will look into the compact .357's. Definitely thinking revolver as well. She says she doesn't want anything bigger than a .22 but may change her mind after shooting one and seeing just how close to a BB gun they are. Maybe go to a range where she can try a few different ones out.

.22 is too small for reliable personal defense, especially in a revolver. People survive 6-8 9mm shots all the time...emptying a 6 shot .22 revolver won't do much more than annoy someone who's seriously jacked up on stimulants unless you get lucky and hit them in the eye socket.

Revolvers are generally best as defense guns for people who don't practice much or maintain their guns much, and who want the most reliability vs. the least fuss. However, you can carry more rounds in a smaller, lighter package with a semiautomatic. It depends on how much time she's willing to devote to practicing.

The best thing is, as Quik said, to go to a range and have her work her way up. Start with a .22 to get her used to handling and aiming, then once she's comfortable with that, try some larger/heavier calibers and see how she does.

My opinion: .38 Special or .380 Auto is the smallest round that you want to carry for self-defense -- but you can start endless flame wars by bringing up this subject anywhere, because there are some that insist nothing smaller than .45ACP will do.

As far as .22 rifles, IMO just get a Ruger 10/22 with iron sights (under $250 new), several magazines, a 500-round brick, and go have fun.

Well, a Ruger 10/22 is cheap (I think about $180 for the basic "carbine" model), but it can get progressively more expensive due to the fact that you can replace any part with thousands of custom parts. I've probably spent about $1000 on mine, but on the plus side I can kill a beer can out to 200 yds. I know guys who've blown WAY more.

Get a 10/22, a sub $150 scope, dissassemble and smooth out the trigger/hammer/sear/bolt catch with emery paper (they're somewhat rough from the factory) and resist the urge to go any further.

CZ makes a kick-ass bolt .22, but those start out at around $500.

I agree with getting her in the most high-power cartidge she can handle. People vastly overestimate the stopping power of handguns cartridges.

It is not about stopping power, it is about shot placement. If the only gun she is comfortable with is a 22 than have her practice with that. It doesn't do anyone any good to be waving some gun around that they aren't comfortable with and blow holes in the air. I have personally seen a guy get killed with a little bitty 22. A shot to the central nervous system with a 22 will drop anyone regardless of what they are on and that is the only guarantee you will drop someone.
