iMovie is free with your purchase of an Apple computer![]()

I really hate to say this but i dont there is anything out there that will do what you want for free. *(cough)torrents(cough).
If you are really looking for free you could move over to a linux os.

That might be a way to go if you dont mind dealing with all the other issues of going to linux.
Are you looking for something to get you out of a jam quickly or do you want a long term solution? If you just want to use something quickly and be done with it, you can always look into a Adobe Premiere or a similar editing application. Most companies have downloadable trial versions that you could use for a limited time (usually 30-days or so).
Adobe downloads
movie maker does suck, it is hard for me to edit at home on my windows computer when i could edit at school on imacs with final cut and imovie (i have not taken the time to fully figure out final cut)

I'd recommend trying Avid's free download. It's pretty user friendly and should have more than enough features you're looking for to put together simple sequences.
Adobe Premier works well with windows, but I think it might be pricey

Kill all the telemarkers
But they’ll put us in jail if we kill all the telemarkers
Telemarketers! Kill the telemarketers!
Oh we can do that. We don’t even need a reason
Which of the above mentioned freeware do the millions of videos on YouTube with music and scrolling titles and fade in/fade out effects use?
I can't believe people pay anything for editing software to put up 2 minute videos of their dogs, cars, kids, home improvement projects or weekend's hot tub action.
Go Mac, don't look back.
Have you played with the newest version of imovie? it is teh suck. I tried helping a friend with a quick project and did so many facepalms I just threw the footage on my external and cut it for her with FCP. God that program went from a cool tool for beginners to the biggest POS out there. My suggestion, for a mac user, is to keep the old version.
never touched the program but does it not even allow you to import the file? Can you put it into the timeline and render it? Can't you play the audio file in quicktime or something else and export the file as mp3 if that is what is needed? You shouldn't need to buy a program to convert simple files.
If you can't do any of the above, go to versiontracker.com and search for a free app. It will probably default to OSX for an operating system so make sure you select the correct operating system you are user before you search. search something like "audio conversion"
Enough people complained in the testing process that Apple changed the installer to keep the old iMovie rather than deleting it as they usually do. For those of you with only iMovie 08 installed here is the old version to download. The new version really sucks as a lab monitor. The students come in start it up and say 'this isn't iMovie'. 'Yes it is, it's just new and sucky', and then I direct them over to the Final Cut Express and Pro machines which they figure out quicker.
