Surf in Portugal ? How is it

I am looking to head to portugal in the summer to go surfing perhaps, what kind of waves can I expect ? Between June-Aug when is the best time to go there.

Any recommendations on southern spain while I'm at it ?

    thanks

Several mates of mine go there often. It is very good and it is right in line to pick up the lows straight off the Atlantic. You'll need wheels, it is a really cool chilled place to visit. The locals are generally very easy going. Try and get a copy of Stormrider Guide Europe. Well worth the money.

And just bring ur A game. The lokes blow there. Way more bark than bite. Yeah the paddle out in foreign turf is intimidating, but f that, put those girls in their place. Plus the spray looks way better in rear view mirror. USA.

hey i'm studying in lisbon currently. definitely come to portugal, you won't regret it at all. like the others said it's all about where and when you go.

you'll have to rent a car, but this country is dirt cheap. head down to sagres to avoid tourists, and you can surf either side of the point depending on the weather and you're bound to find good waves. work your way up the west coast and those beaches are almost deserted unless you go in july or august.

i haven't been surfing that much so all i know is that it's inconsistent but not hard to find good surf.

pm me if you have any more questions!
    -nikki

oh yeah peniche is supposed to be amazing but i haven't been up there yet.

definitely avoid portugal in general in july or august. every euro and their brother will be here then

Thanks Will. Before Portugal talk, were you saying you've been to Brazil because you know I've been there? Just wondering where that came from.

Now, crap, should I know the answer to your question? Cause I haven't got a clue (but how you presented it makes me think it's obvious). Lisbon? Algarve? Cortegaça? Fuck, just guessing. And please don't say Kosh.

And forgot language question. Funny you mention that. Don't speak portugaze, but when in Brazil, the lokes there always told me my spanish was a mix of port and espan. Why you ask?

Fortaleza, Canoa Quebrada? You lucky f'n bastid. I've a got a story for you when living down there. Will never spell Brazil with an "s" until I've earned it. Yup yup Will, when you get situated, hit me up and depress me. But miss those burgers with eggs on 'em, lol.

Afro, you messaged me through ARSA so I'll reply here.

I was there March/April. Summer is going to be super busy everywhere and probably pricey too. Waves in summer generally small but supposedly they get increases in swell occasionally. Pretty much everywhere you will need wheels except for Peniche. There you can get by with walking or probably renting a bike. There are a bunch of surf camps as well that you can stay at, off season 14 euros a day, summer, maybe 20. Portugal is super nice and from what I hear, summer brings tons of hotties out. No offence to the Portuguese but there are no hot girls there so I really hope when I get back there in July it will be a different story at the beaches.

Southern Spain will be the craziest place to be during the summer. Tons of Euros from everywhere. Al Garve is the area to be. For babes, waves(small ones), and partying.

gotta love those brasil burgers with all the fixin's.
    potato stix ? on a burger ? Yes !
would like to hear the braSil story. Love that country !
Yesterday I grabbed a 6 pack of Super Bock( 5.6%, $5.99) to bring to lunch since the brasilian restaurant doesn't have a liquor license and that stuff is tasty.

Regarding "the best part is getting there" line. From Fortaleza we took some Land Rover Defender tour to work our way to where we we were going. That was a cool part, i.e., getting shuttled by raft over deep water, getting to the half moon town, err canoa. But also loved the buggie's in the desert of a town whose name escapes me. Also taking that "chairlift" up the dunes to sand surf also cool. I got hooked with a friend of my sisters that's got some influence in BraSil - fine, you win- you know armored car mercedez bros. Ever eat in that place in Paolo with the fig tree in middle of the restaurant? Think it's called Figueroa or something. The story may have to be private thru email or PM's...my wife checks this shit I think.

When life in the U S and A bums me out, I simply get out the ice, sugar, limes and Pitu .....slap in a dvd of brasil and kick back with a big ole bazzzeeeado
and I know I'll be back in brasil again soon.
MY wife leaves tomorrow for 2 weeks.
I can't make it this trip and THAT just sucks, for me

Yo Willy, Trip da Areia...holy crap...passeios ecologicos. Believe or not, Rio had the heaviest surf when I was there. Two minutes after checking in, I'm like, late. But Trip da'Are, let me know if still exists. Fna.

I haven't been to Fortaleza yet but it's becoming the worldwide kite mecca with constant steady wind & waves. Best Kiteboarding has a whole testing site there. Furthest north I've been is Bahia.
    Porto Seguro and beyond....
dude, my first time in Rio was MONSTER surf. Looked out the window of our hotel in Copa and across the Rua it was sunny and HUDGE ! shore break like waimea, sick.

Yeah Will, Rio was sweet the moment my eyes seen that womp. Zuma-like. When I said late, I meant late as in seeya luggage, I'm off. It was like sunset time and scurried out to see what was up. After racing out to the lineup trying to beat darkness, I'm like okay hope there's no freaky shit but sand below. Never touched ground tho.

We just got the new iMac 3 weeks ago, they knocked off $200 of $1200 at MicroCenter and wifey and I already have ipods and an iphone so trigger pulled , finally. I just got this footage to help beta test on our samsung blu ray player. You already know I'm a freak like that. Kitesurfing and alpine snowboarding.
I didn't know apple was planning on slapping a bluray into the machines tho. Not that we would've waited. HiDef DVDS look killer on the mac. I got that 2 for 1 deal from Wink on Waiting Game and Respect, thanks to the maggot collective.

since this thread is about surfing in portugal, I LIKE Sagres beer, not really...

Download the higher resolution file. It puts the YouTube version to shame.

whoa ! thanks afroman for slamming the brakes on before this thread turned ghey'r than the soy milk Latte I'm drinking.
I looked at your website, cool stuff.
Love the trainspotting motif. A kite buddy of mine is a sign maker and has a plotter that makes BIG vinyl stickers. He's made me a bunch of custom stuff for my car and boards.
bottom line....skip Portugal, go to Brasil. The chicks are way hotter and getting laid is like a no brainer, just wrap the rascal and don't fall asleep while she takes off with your watch and your wallet. Getting roofie'd is something to watch out for, too.
Oh yeah, the surfing in Brasil is killer. food & drinks are cheap.
    Hotels= wicked cheap.
renting a car is pretty pricey, tho.
sorry to steer your thread off course. well, not really. Cito seems like a good guy to swap travellin' stories with over beers and beers and beers.
    dig THIS fellas !
