Is anyone going to leave LA on the afternoon or evening of the 8th? It doesn't look like I can get out early enough for day 1.

That is some scary sideline stalking action! Geezus, at first I thought hey this is kinda hot! But after a few frames I'm thinking this dude is a freak. At least get some skiing/boarding action, not freaky sideline stalking eeriness. But then again, I'm a chick.

    that's crazy!

i was at A-Basin last saturday and it was cold, overcast, and, well, snowing.

all the "beach" front slots were filled with bbqing fools and one crew had a flatbed truck with a generator, their own DJ alternating with live bands, and...a full-sized hot tub. even though it was freezing as fiznuck.

i kept lamenting that this wasn't really Spring skiing, but the locals kept telling me to shut my trap and enjoy the fresh.

i still can't believe that 90% of the resorts out there shut down last weekend...they have so much freakin' snow it's unbelieveable.

but here's to Cali Spring/Summer skiing and the MM in less than a month!

    boo-yaa!

btw, who is camping this time around?

I am going up the evening of the 9th if you can't get out earlier. I can pick you up the evening of the 8th if you want to hang in Ventura for the day. As of now I am going south on the 11th, but may stay to the 13th if there is interest.

Can someone tell me how long it would take to drive to Mammoth from SF? Assume that I don't drive slow.

Time will tell on the ding-age. Either way, I've got a portable bbq, a cooler, and time to kill. Pray for sun.

AKBruin - I'm figuring somewhere around 6 hours. If Tioga pass were open it would be more like 4-5. I'm probably driving, leaving Thursday sometime and returning Sunday afternoon. PM me if interested in carpooling. I've got loads of room in my car. Will probably camp at Fort FKNA, but may consider a condo.

In any case, if you're ever really in this situation make sure you at least bargain in a couple of fluffers.

According to Greenrun's directions from a couple seasons ago:

Coming from 395 - Drive exactly 4.6 miles, not 4.7 or 4.8 but exactly 4.6 miles (1.4 miles from Mammoth when you turn onto the scenic route) off of 395 up the scenic route towards Mammoth. Turn right (turn left if you're coming from Mammoth) onto the dirt pull off, go about 20 yards and follow the dirt road up the hill to the left (most people want to bare right on the main dirt road). Go about 100 yards to the top of the hill and you will see a huge flat area w/a camp fire ring, tons of flat spots for tents, and endless parking.
I'd probably describe the parking area a little differently, but this is close enough. Also, last time I was there (two seasons ago), there was a large log in the way keeping you from driving into where we put the tents. McPoser moved it, but I'm sure its back now.

I'll try to remember to write FORT FKNA on a piece of cardboard and pin it to a tree near where you pull off the paved road. If someone is going early (like on Wednesday or early Thurs), maybe they could do the same - first one there, post a sign. Or nail some Bros to the tree.

i followed those Fort FKNA directions to the "T" last year and I ended up in a totally new spot, thusly dubbed Camp Dookey.

and as for the drive from SF, Sinecure nailed it. Figure 3-4 from SF to Reno and then another 3-4 from Reno to Mammoth (the road from R to M is littered with tons of 25-45 mph speed zones so you keep going from 75 down to 25 and back again the entire trip). Tioga is the shizzy when it's open as I made it back to SF in 4 flat one year!
