    Tahoe area in mid-May?

Is there anything even remotely worth skiing?

I was supposed to be there this week, but since trips I try to coordinate with others seem to pretty much never end up working out I plan on just jumping in the truck and head out that way solo after graduation in May.

Good campsites in the area that you would recommend?

I know Mammoth goes for a while and I want to check that out too.

I tried searching, but didn't get very much. Thanks.

here is an inbounds TR from memorial day a few years ago... it could give you an idea of what you could expect in may.

I've heard that Schralpine Ghettos can be fun during the spring. Especially with their $139 spring pass.

    Mammoth is a must visit.

    What up Phish.

I've only been here a few months and have no idea about spots for mid-may, but I am jiggy to see what can be scared-up.

When is Squaw scheduled to close?

    What about BC options?

squaw is scheduled to close on may 11th, tho they're saying maybe may 18th.

squaw typically closes after memorial day weekend, but for some reason wants to close early this year.

Thats pretty lame that they want to close early. I would probably hit the road 5/12 or 5/13 and head straight to Tahoe.

you know if you leave earlier, there is the mammoth mini 5/8-11. there is plenty of snow for backcountry. things don't always freeze overnight, though. best bets are carson pass, sonora pass, and mammoth area. lassen peak is another option though i don't know when the road will open.

Wish I could leave earlier, but the fam will be in town for graduation stuff until like the 10th or 11th.

Keep checking on Squaw and/or Alpine's closing dates, it is super fun if there is enough snow. Could go either way really.

Backcountry around Tahoe gets pretty burnt at the bottom, so might not be easy access. If you want do an overnight into Desolation Wilderness (just West of the lake) you could find plenty, just might need to walk in with boots on.

The big volcano's can be good then (Lassen and Shasta).

Or of course S.Sierra's are sick.

The passes were mentioned above, (Tioga, Sonora, etc) but the deal with these is pretty sweet. They usually plow the East side, and open what is plowed, before it actually is open all the way across. So, Tioga in spring you drive up a few thousand and can just camp at the road closure, and there is AMAZING skiing everywhere.

I did a Basom....here is some history (time will tell about this year).....shameless self TR promotion (I had fun finding them. )

    I have no idea yet.

Thinking of trying to do the entire season out of a camper, at least that would be the ultimate way to ski all over NA and figure out where I want to be. Throw a comp or two in the mix just so I can know I did it and not regret not doing it when I am old and creaky.

It is an interesting idea, but if asked for MHO, I would vote against.

My take is you will raise your personal level more by moving to one town/resort:
--you will find ski partners that consistently push you (and you them).
--you will learn a mountain, and have goals that you go after on big days.

    my 2 cents.

    Point well taken.

I just don't want to get into a lease. I could save alot of money paying no rent and just having to spring for some propane when the tank runs out.

I heard rumors but not fact that Squaw may close mid May.

But you can still hike up Mt Run or the KT service road and ski down if you sign inat the bottom...no?

I think it is from warm temps melting 2 feet a week off the mtn.
At least that is what happened at Mammoth last week
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

For camping around Mammoth, you can usually pull into the woods off the Mammoth Scenic Loop (the cut off btwn the mountain and 395) for simple car camping. Depending on snow melt, there are camp spots up by Mary Lake. Most of the camping off of June Lake Loop is like parking lots.

If Squaw/Alpine is open, you can do a few days there and overnight park at Alpine. Then head south to Tioga and Mammoth.

Thanks for the info. Definitely will want to stay away from the more populated camp sites.

there's your answer to why squaw is closing on may 11th.... one week later than alpine.
we need the two competing to stay open longer, not just announcing dates.
