OK. I'd say May would your best bet for a good base and stable snowpack.

Should we bring a hot tub for the summit?

I just climbed Mt. Elbert this Saturday. Although some of the chutes are starting to fill in, it looks bare and it will need a ton more snow if we plan on skiing it in December. It was blowing really hard at top. If we plan to ski it, a summit should not be in the game plan. A good alternative would be to hit Parry Peak. I have pics below, sorry about the quality, I had to take them with my camcorder.

Pic #1: East face of Mt. Elbert
Pic #2: Parry Peak (This could be a good ski and perhaps best Dec option)
    Pic #3: South Mt Elbert
Pic #4-7: views from the summit

Quite a downer on the amount of snow here so far. Maybe it will be best to wait until spring... Pray for snow!

    Quandary summit attempt

Planning an east route ascent and descent in mid January. Will not be right after a snowstorm, allowing for a stable snowpack on that relatively gentle route. Anyone want to go along?

I could be in for Quandary. I have some friends going up for a climb up Elbert on Friday, so I will find out if it is skiable from the summit yet. It may be. The snowfield below it still looks a little patchy though.

Definite interest. Busy for the next couple weekends (Avy II!!!!), but random weekday anyone?

I know this is about 14ers, but spent some recent time browsing through 13ers.com and saw this:

    Grand Couloir of Mt. Aetna:

    North Star Mountain:

    And back to topic (Conundrum):

    I'm in for random weekdays.

Hit me up-I have Monday, Wednesday, and Friday off about every other week. I'd be down to hit up a 14 or do some extended touring.

And yes, count me in on a 14er summit.

So that's called Mt. Aetna, huh? Amongst the homies, we just call it the Vag Mountain.

Anyway, to get back on track, I'll post up this bad boy, taken last week. Skiing off the summit could be dicey (but possible), and the Cirque looks primed and ready for schralpin!!!

There's lots of good 13ers out there to hit. Some of them are probably more fun than most of the 14ers.

Conundrum's a good one, but better to wait until you can drive up there. The road goes to over 12,000 feet, making it a pretty short approach if you wait until June. And the aspect on Conundrum Couloir is such that it stays in generally until July. I watched a friend tumble about 300 feet down that one once. It was pretty scary - there's a writeup on it over at summitpost.org

Highly recommended springtime mission. There were 2 free old USFS cabins right at the base of the couloir when I skied it in the late 90's. There's also a really nice (fee) cabin another 100m up. Can't remember the name of the cabin, though.

Is this Elbert, or am I an idiot?

And Joe, are you still in for the spring sometime?

oh yes, I am still in for this spring. I think a castle/ conundrum trip could be a fun weekend complete with igloos, hot springs, booze and hopefully even a few ladies. I am going to do lowly mt sherman on saturday by myself or with a non mag friend just to see how my legs feel. Hopefully the knees will hold up, and if they do, it will be the first of many more to come. The real question is are you in for the spring sometime???
