    Dog Food?

I was sure there was a thread about this awhile back but a search on the term "dog food" in all forums produced no results.

Soo... what do you feed your dog and why?

First Mate. Made local with no weird shit and some real meat/fruit/veggies plus the dogs totally dig on it. Its costs about $15 more a month, but thats worth for me not having to worry that some fuckwit in china is supplementing chicken parts with industrial waste.

Eukanuba large breed lamb and rice. My pup was having digestive issues when she was young and the vet recommended it to help - plus it gives her a nice coat.

Innova puppy food. Its been kick ass, but expensive. Since the boy is about 2 months away from 1 yr old, I want to start switching to adult so I have been doing research.

What I've found is that Innova has superior ingredients by all measures, however I've noticed that other quality larger producers, specifically Iams and Eukanuba have better "guaranteed analysis" numbers. Also the bigger two aren't grain based loaded up with artificial preservatives etc... Wierd... Jury is still out....

Many years ago my dog chewed the crotch out of an ex-girlfriends underpants. The stained part with the extra insert. That really put me off.

My dogs both had parvo as pups when we got them (long story). After thousands spent on vet bills... we decided to give them a leg up with really, really good dog food. It's expensive (it really is solid gold) but we've been happy with the results.

A year ago, my 13ish year old Sheltie stopped eating... hundreds of dollars later at the vet (where they did all kinds of tests and found many old-dog things actually minor-league wrong w/her) we discovered she didn't like the $50/bag food. She now gets pure unadulrated junk food (the gross stuff in the packages that used to be in burger shapes but now are just pouches of what is supposed to look like ground up meat but has no nutritional value whatsoever) and she snarfs it up -- if I live to be her age, I hope people let me eat whatever I want too...

Nutro Natural Lamb and Rice for my lab. She's in perfect shape with a great coat. No need to switch.

Innova. Why? It's some of the best I've found (human-grade ingredients, no fillers) and I get it for free.

Wellness. Started on the sweet potato & whitefish when he was a pup, as he had some stomach issues. Now, He digs the chicken. All stuff you would eat, just blended, and baked into little bits. Costs a hair more, but you feed less due to less fillers.

I fed Pro Plan to my lab most of her life. She did well on it, but I wanted to try something different to see if I could reduce the amount of waste she generates. I switched to Canidae and again she did well. Quality ingredients and she likes the taste. I've also tried Fromms, Nutrisource, and Taste of the Wild. I tried Nutro and Eucanuba when she was a puppy and she didn't like Nutro. I didn't try EVO even though it is probably one of the better foods out there because it is too damn expensive. I told the pet food store that I love my dog, but she isn't going to eat better than me.

She likes Taste of the Wild and ingredient wise it is probably the best food I've tried, but she is licking her paws a lot and I've read that could be in part due to the higher protein content at 32%. Not sure I believe that, but considering it is expensive ($39.99 for a 30 lbs.) I'm going to go back to Canidae. About the same price as Pro Plan and supposedly it has "better" ingredients. My only concern with Canidae is it is lower in protein and fat so come hunting season I'll consider getting a food with more protein and fat.

For me it comes down to if the dog likes the food, does the dog do well on it, and I don't have to feed her a lot of food every day to maintain her weight. Cost is somewhat of an issue, but I'll spend the money if she needed a real expensive food to be healthy.

Big dog = Nutro High Energy
Small dog = Nutro Lamb/Rice small bites

They do good on both foods and I've been feeding that for a long time.

Eagle Pack Holistic Select. We tried (over the course of a few months) a bunch of different foods when we first got our lab. This is the only one that she is able to consistently digest.

FWIW, Iams has had some pretty bad press in recent history regarding their practices for product/animal testing. I'm sure a few other manufacturers aren't any better. If that's something that concerns you, use teh internets and inform yourself.

Edit - I just realized how funny that last part really is

Edit 2: I do remember that other thread, too, but can't find it. Someone had posted a great link to companies that use high quality ingredients and have stellar product/animal testing practices. I also remember that the stuff we're currently using wasn't on that list :

yogurt, cottage cheese, venison, grated carrot, and broccoli, any roadkill and groundhogs she can find. We also feed her Innova, with Nupro powdered joint supplement, makes a tasty gravy and is good for stiff and sore joints.

    MMM Dinner.

She actually ate the hind quarters off this. I thought they went for the entrails first. Cubby missed out she loves pre digested grass.

That isn't near as gross as cheap dogfood.

Kirkland adult dog food, lamb & rice mix (green bag) -- Costco --

-- because the vet recommended it, it's reasonably priced, and it doesn't give the dogs the runs. (one of the dogs has a picky stomach -- he'll eat anything, but it gets messy...)
