There are some ridiculous people in there for sure- any wonder that the friends who introduced me to Melons were Choate buddies who went on to Trinity?- but the bacon cheeseburgers are damn good.

And I may be a preppy fuck, but I come by it honestly and only exhibit it tastefully. For instance, I know the only acceptable time to "pop the collar" is when sailing or playing tennis, and that the only acceptable time to kill a hooker is in your parents' Maine hunting camp when they are on island for the summer.

Jackson Hole...haven't been in a long time but nothing better than a half pound of grilled nastiness. Trying to eat one gives new meaning to the term "food management".

Stick to popping your collar when you're burying the dead hookers.
You'll most likely get stabbed on the boat.

    Unless its a Bayliner.
    Then carry on.

OL, check out Strip House sometime if you haven't already- or maybe you don't like mashed potatoes lovingly prepared with goose fat.
Corner Bistro gets my vote. Holy hell that was a good burger. And they don't rob you there either. You get a burger, fries and a beer for about 10 stones!
Some people are like Slinkies... not really good for anything, but you still can't

in NYC, I am a big fan of Jackson Hole for burgers, especially their astoria store by LGA.

    I also like BetterBurger.

since TGR's last burger thread, 5 guys has started planting stores in NYC. They're very good, too.

But to me, there is something about having a greasy almost-raw bar burger at your average irish pub.. it may not make the NY Times best burger list (or BD4A's for that matter), but it sure scores big in the "comfort food" factor, which is a big plus, for me anyway.

Ever had one? It's still very much a burger, that's the beauty part.

Yeah, that's a great spot. Glad you made it!

In other news, I went to the gym this morning, it's almost time for lunch, and I would kill for a burger from any one of these places right now.

And Steve is certainly comfortable with food... or at least was.

I hear ya - there are "classy" burger serving restaurants all over DC, but 5 Guys still own (Clyde's for sit-down.) The neighborhood joint near my parents' house on Cap. Hill is currently owned and operated by lesbians (not lipstick, either ) but the place has been there for over 100 years and has awesome burgers. Nothin' beats a small-volume pub Patty Melt. NOTHING.

you know where is also good and not mentioned much? pauls in the e village. deelish hangover burger! the egg creams there are great as well.

il mundo has a crazay avant garde burger with a raw egg on top on fresh semolina, if funky gastronomy is your thang it's worth checking into

the whole thing about "best burger" just never made sense to me

people like their burgers so differently and really what i want in a burger changes with my mood\place\time of year etc etc.

generally speaking though, i have a preference for burgers that are made from good meat and very simple. Ill also say theres almost no room to compare ones we all cook at home over a real grill vs ones that show up on a plate.

ive had many great burgers over the years, each in their own way, but burgers are just one thing I cant put a "best" label on.

well, yeah, but i'd have to go to one of those three..

i mean this vibe: walk into your average irish pub on queens blvd. and order a burger extra rare and eat it at the bar while watching the mets lose.

Corner Bistro on a good day (they can be inconsistent, and being that I am a fat kid at heart and lived right down the street from here, it has been tried many a time) is one of teh best in the city. People only hate on it b/c of the years of hype. Plus the 2 dollar McSorleys served by the crusty old bartenders makes it taste that much better.

Pauls is an amazingly good greasy burger, good call there BeanDip and for some reason flies under the radar more than the other burger joints.

Shake Shack is amazing, but god those lines make the Bistro look short.

Mellons is good, especially the chilli burger, but not up to the par of the other joints.

And Steve... Diet or no, you should be banned from ever eating a burger again for saying Better Burger.

Great list BD4A. And def give Corner Bistro another go. They have two chefs (I'm guessing you didn't get the good one).

    Molly's seconded. Paul's too.

I'll add Old Town (18th b/w B'way and Park) for the classic pub burger on quintessential NYC surroundings.

And for a quick pop-in or take-out, Blue 9 Burger (3rd Ave and 13th) hits the spot too. Not too different from In N Out.

Corner Bistro is definitely the place, and JG Melon's version of the Bistro Burger (bacon cheese) is pretty good as well--the cottage fries are a must there. But Mr. Bartley's in Harvard Square is still better.

sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, better burger right up there with 5-guys and in-and-out.

but it's a different genra.. comparing any of the above with a place like jackson hole, is, well, like comparing stowe to a place like jackson hole. apples and oranges. but stowe can be compared to sugarbush, just like jackson hole can be compared to snowbird.
