You really need to learn how to read. I'm not trying to be insulting, but you do seem to have inordinate difficulty at understanding fairly basic statements and what they mean. Working on reading comprehension could help you with this, and then maybe you wouldn't be so misunderstood yourself.
Maybe you should get someone to explain posts to you before you try to respond (I really don't feel like doing it, but maybe you know someone who could).
    That is all.[/wasted effort]

Philly is not a ghetto but certain areas are real shitty. It has always been that way and if stay out of those areas you are fine. I can't think of another major city that is so segregated, it really is a city of neighborhoods.
This is totally true. As with any big city, there are good neighborhoods and bad. Philly has some zones that are scary as hell, but if you're like most of the people on this board then you'll never be in one of them. Obviously sometimes there's violent crime in safer neighborhoods (muggings and robberies), but I lived there for three years when in law school and not one person I knew was robbed or threatened that entire time.

When I was still competing nationally for swimming I remember seeing car fires from the stands of the pool at Lasalle. That was quite the ambiance for a national swim meet.

Just to add insult to injury:

    ------------------------------

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Philadelphia is home to the least attractive people in the United States, a survey of visitors and residents showed on Friday.

The city of more than 1.5 million people was also found to be among the least stylish, least active, least friendly and least worldly, according to the "America's Favorite Cities" survey by Travel & Leisure magazine and CNN Headline News.

About 60,000 people responded to the online survey -- at www.travelandleisure.com -- which ranked 25 cities in categories including shopping, food, culture, and cityscape, said Amy Farley, senior editor at the magazine.

For unattractiveness, Philadelphia just beat out Washington DC and Dallas/Fort Worth for the bottom spot. Miami and San Diego are home to the most attractive people, the poll found.

But Farley pointed out the results don't mean people in Philadelphia are ugly or the city is a bad place to visit.

"We were asking people to vote on attractiveness, not unattractiveness. Travel & Leisure editors believe there are a lot of attractive people in Philadelphia," she said.

"The relative attractiveness of its residents is only a minuscule factor in evaluating a city's merit."

Philadelphians' self-esteem has been undermined by national surveys showing they are among the fattest people in the United States. The American Obesity Association ranked the city in the top 10 for overweight people every year between 2000 and 2005.

And sporting pride in a city known for the fierce loyalty of its fans has been hurt by not having had a national champion in any of its four main sports since the 76ers won the National Basketball Association title in 1983.

I recently saw a documentary about gun running on a CBC program called the Passionate Eye (produced in Canada). The show detailed how guns are bought legally in Georgia and then driven up I95 to places like Philly and NYC where they're sold on the street illegally. Something like 90% of guns involved in murders up north were traced back to a handful of gun shops in Georgia.
Apparently, in Georgia, one is allowed to purchase as many guns as they can per transaction, so people are literally filling up trucks full of guns legally and then distributing them amongst gangs up north.
One ex-gun runner they interviewed said gun running was a huge $ maker for gangs who sell the guns on the street for 2-3 times more than what they paid. They recruit young men with no record to drive down to Georgia to make the runs. If someone gets caught and goes to jail, they find someone else willing to take the risk to make some fast cash.
The show traced how one gun purchased legally in Georgia made its way north illegally through gangs in Philly, NYC and then on to Toronto where it was involved in a murder.
An ATF detective interviewed estimated the murder by gun rate in northern cities like Philly and NYC would drop exponentially if Georgia would follow suit with most states and institute stricter regulations on gun purchasing.
Nobody is saying to take away the guns or stop selling them, just limit the number of guns sold in a single purchase. Why is that such a wrong thing amongst the gun lobbyist?

Because the gun lobby wants to sell as many guns as possible, being wholly funded as they are by gun manufacturers.

I understand that. By gun lobbyist, I meant the individuals in this thread quoting Charltin Hestin and/or the various people blathering on about their rights being violated who have no stake in gun manufacturing or sales that probably don't even own a gun themselves, yet spew gun lobby rhetoric for some unknown reason. whats up with that?

As a long time philly resident I have to chime in here. As stated before the gun violence in philly is off the charts but it is so isolated. In certain parts of the city (like center city, old city, rittenhouse, logan square...) there is NO violence. In these parts of the city the crime is comparable to the suburb I grew up in. Barely anybody gets robbed, cars don't get broken into, people walk the streets at night all the time with no fear. Its like philly is two different cities. This is part of the problem. As a resident in the safe parts i see the hundreds of murders in southwest philly and feel like it is happening 100 miles away. It doesn't even strike me that i can see the most dangerous intersections in america from my rooftop. Until a mayor gets elected that can bridge this gap and get the two cities to work together ( like wealthy wants lower taxes while gun ravaged wants more cops- less money doesn't equal more cops) the problem isn't going to be solved.

no, it's actually a little document called the constitution.

when i get paid, i go to the gunstore and typcially buy two or three -- because i like guns and i like shooting them with my friends. i also buy gear like an addiction. to me, there is no difference between my going to the gunstore and buying another AK-47, a 1911, and 1,000 rounds of ammo then going to my local ski shop and buying another board, new skis, and a bunch of other stuff i really don't need.

my guns and my gear are in the hands of a law-abiding citizen, and I'm sick of the anti-gun crowd telling me what i can and cannot do because some PC dickwad politician wants to criminalize guns rather than the criminals.

and guess what... it is already illegal for people to purchase guns for others, selling them to states that don't allow 2nd amendment freedoms, etc. but the criminals are already breaking that law, so why enact more laws to punish law abiding folks like myself? criminals break laws, that's why they're "criminals".

So gun lobbyists are actually staunch defenders of political freedom? They do what they do out of the goodness of their hearts and the purity of their convictions, not because they're getting paid by gun manufacturers?

    solved.

I really wish that were the case. Center City has just lived through the "center city rapist" problem which also caused at least one murder. Burglaries are rampant. Car burglaries are off the charts. I have friends who post signs in their car saying "there is no loose change and nothing of value in this car, IT HAS NO RADIO"
I personally watched a guy smack out a car window at 16th & Walnut at lunch time. Center city, Fairmount, Olde City are high crime areas. Most doesn't get reported.

The people actually paying taxes in Phila. are getting ass fucked. I am a small business owner and left because after paying the "business privilege tax", "school tax" etc there was nothing left.

The majority of Philly's population contribute nothing leaving a small minority of wage earners and small businesses to foot the bill. If you have a large business, Philly will grant you a multi-year exemption from not only the business taxes but real estate taxes will be at a reduced rate as well. This leaves the little guy footing the bills. If you don't pay the politicians, they will fuck you without remorse.

Phila has more than enough cops to form it's own police state. More cops are not the answer as all they do is prowl the roads writing bullshit tickets to white suburbanites to pay the cost of their salaries.

The police and the community are at odds thanks to policies that began in the Rizzo years which relied heavily on head busting and zero head thinking.

The black community distrusts the police and to the police, the black community are "critters" This I know 1st hand. This is to be expected as Phila has one of the lowest standards in the nation for police employment.

There is NO ONE on the horizon who even remotely can fix this. The Democrat machine runs the city like the mafia. The money goes to the Democrat Crime family and they will NEVER LOSE AN ELECTION.

I personally worked with a guy who never was around on election day. He was a "Poll adjuster" who was paid to vote in the name of dead people.

Philly is a sewer and will never change

On the contrary, it is a known fact that once the gun lobbyists go home after work they read to blind children and serve soup to the homeless. Yes, I know they're getting paid big time by all sorts of stakeholders. And I'm happy to be lifetime NRA member who fully supports their efforts.

This thread started out about Philadelphia -- where as an Army vet, concealed weapons permit holder, and winner of several practical shooting comp. titles, it is a FELONY for me to carrry my firearms for protection - but the criminals do anyway. Yet, here in Idaho I can happily go about my day with a full size 1911 strapped to my belt in open view.

    Not so firearm breath...

Philly is one of the easiest cities in the country to obtain a license to carry. My 89 year old father just renewed his.

The problem is not with licensed firearms, it is with the 13-30 year old black males who roam the streets packing illegal guns and are looking to use them to prove their manhood.
