    January Road Trip - Comments!

Ok, no JONGING or I'm gonna cry, although I'm worthy of Jonging since I'm still in gaperland (florida) and only moving to Colorado for good in December.

AAAAAAAAAnyway ... I graduate college in december and signed my contract for my job, but made sure to get all of January off!! So the planning starts. I want to ski as much as I can, but also get to see as many places as I can. I'll be in Boulder for a long time after that anyway and can ski summit & vail county as much as I want later on.

so ... ROADTRIP!!!!! Here's what I think would be an awesome trip:

    Boulder
    Summit County
    Salt Lake City
    Jackson Hole
    Grand Targhee
    Sun Valley
    PNW (where here?)
    (possible jump to Seattle)
    Lake Tahoe
    (possible jump to LA)
    Squaw Valley
(pass Las Vegas on the way)
    Salt Lake
    Summit County
    Boulder

Mapped out in Google that's about 2800 miles, spread out over 4-5 weeks that's totally manageable and still gets me tons of days of skiing. I'm also thinking / wishing to visit some of the cool cities along my route ... Maybe Seattle to the north (or even Vancouver??), Los Angeles to the south (got some friends I wanna visit there), and maybe Las Vegas on the way back from Squaw to SLC...

comments? JONG? cool trip? better places to be? just storm-chase instead of pre-planned roadtrip? give up and realize I suck at skiing and all those places are too rad for me?

    JONG out.

I guess if you're gonna be in CO a while it doesn't matter but if I were you I'd try and hit up Telluride/CB/Southwest CO on the way out or the way back.

skip summit county as a stop. agree with Joey Joe Joe, try to hit telluride and silverton, they're damn far away from you in Boulder, you're not likely to get there often. From Sun Valley maybe head north into BC, hit W/BC and Vancouver, then come back down into WA? I'd also try to hit Mammoth, but you have Tahoe in there twice.

ditto. skip boulder and summit on the way out if you'll be there at the end. definitely skip LA, are you kiddin me? at least mention san fran.

Is this your first time out west ever? You're itinerary should be revised either way, but you can't skip the hoodoo canyonlands if you've never been:

silverton/tride >> Moab or SE Utah camping >> SLC >> Tahoe >> up to PNW/BC, down through Idaho/Jackson >> SLC or Steamboat > PRB

I'll second the mention of Mammoth. Spent a season there a few years ago and loved it.

Bernie, you can always come to Calgary and I'll show you around here.

First time out that far west, yeah!
LA just because I have friends there I want to visit and party with one night.
Boulder & Summit at the beginning are just there for reference, I'll probably head straight out to SLC/UT at the beginning of January!
And Seattle just cause I've heard it's a cool city to visit - I'd be happy to spend even just a day there (same for LA).

What's there to do in MOAB in the winter anyway!? Been in Fruita and Moab this summer mountain biking already! But Telluride does sound cool, maybe on the way back, yeah!

Thanks for the offer dude, I might take you up on it - gotta figure out wher Calgary is first of all, my Canadian geography sucks

i'd just plan on hitting where the storms are. i have 2 weeks of vacation in december and while i have plans on where i'd like to spend a good chunk of it (washington) i certainly won't drive 2 days for no snow.

you are close enough to get pretty much anywhere in a day or two... so i would storm chase if i had a whole friggin month off in the middle of the winter. you might end up doing more skiing and less driving. of course, if you just want to check out all the resorts you have dreamed of skiing regardless of conditions it wouldn't be a bad month either.

    uhm ... live life!
will be working there (embedded systems software). can't wait!

yeah, seems like the consensus is to storm chase for a month rather than road trip. Guess it'll be up to me and whoever goes along to decide. Hmmmmm... stormchasing for a month or road tripping to the coolest resorts and cities in the West?

    Holy shiiiiiiiit!
Technically sad news - was just told that my Visa won't be ready by Xmas so I won't be allowed to leave the country. Which means I can't fly home to Italy for christmas and new years with my family...

.. which means I got all of December to ski as well as January!!!!!!!!!!! With the Praxis skis arriving soon, I'm seriously STOKED.
I'm probably just going to find some cool places to crash at between colorado, utah, and wyoming, and spend as much time skiing rather than driving.
