The official 2008 Montuckistan Summit Thread

...with dates of February 21st to the 29th, 2008. That's a Thursday through the next Friday. If people would like to stay for March 1st and 2nd (that's a saturday and a sunday), then that's fine too.

Location - Bozeman, Montana, to ski Bridger Bowl, Big Sky/Moonlight, Discovery Basin, and perhaps Red Lodge or Grand Targhee?

A preliminary schedule that I propose would have us at Bridger Bowl for the first 3 days - Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Saturday is the Bridger Gully Freeride Competition, and several mags have expressed interest in competing. After that, I propose to move down to Big Sky/Moonlight for 4 days or so...Lots of terrain to have fun with there. Further schedule TBD at this time, and I'm very open to suggestion.

Lodging - Bozeman will be the best bet from a hotels/nightlife perspective. Several mags have proposed getting condos as well, and that could be a player too. For the skids, we probably can scrounge plenty of couch space around town too.

That's all I have time for now, and I will edit this as things come along.

Any suggestions on where to fly into other than Bozeman? $450 (

) round trip just isn't that appealing.

Try Billings...Slippy suggested that.

Butte, Helena, or even Missoula might be worth trying too.

Billings might be a little better, but in my experience, flying into/out of Montana is always expensive. Billings tends to be just enough cheaper than Bozeman that it is sometimes worth the drive. We don't have SWA, JetBlue, etc., so the larger airlines pretty much make you their bitch.

Oh, also, depending on whether or not I'm skiing full-time come February, I may be able to act as a point-man on group tickets for Bridger.

SoCal to SLC = $200 roundtrip
SoCal to Boise = $185 roundtrip
SoCal to anywhere in MT = $450 roundtrip

WTF? Is there some kind of "crossing the state boarder" tax I don't know about?

how far are these places from bozeman in terms of driving time?
could someone book a place in boze for the whole week and use that as a base of operations?
would they be better off booking at one of the ski areas?

i should just google a montana ski area map... doh..

Bridger is 20 minutes from town
Big Sky is 50 minutes, Moonlight's right on an hour
Disco...I think it's about 2 hours, same for Red Lodge (maybe slightly longer)
And approx 3 hours to the 'Ghee and Jackson

For cheapest airfare, probably flying into SLC and convoying up with Utards could work...

Jumper,

If anyone is interested, flying into MPLS and riding with me for 14 hours is also an option. A little sharing on gas and driving would put this fellow in a good mood.

On another note, Jumper seriously PM me, I have a potential party option for the group. I have been talking with some friends in Bozeman and want to run something by you!

There are direct flights to Missoula out of SLC which might be cheaper. Depending on the dates we might be able to drive some (2-3 peeps) from Missoula to Bozeman when we go. Perhaps Rootskier would be willing to do the same.

Maybe. I guess it would depend on the length of the trip. Were you thinking of stopping in SLC for a day? Or maybe Jackson? I don't think I'd be able to do more than 5 days total either way. Maybe flying to SLC and driving from there would work.

I'm guessing any Mammoth Mags could road trip with each other or catch up with Tahoe Mags. Stop in SLC is a must.

What are driving times, and roads like from Sun Valley/ south Idaho? I maybe attending a meeting the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday during the summit, and was trying to figure logistics. That would give me the first four days of the summit, hit my meeting, then maybe come back, or fly home. Any suggestions?

It's been a long time since I did the Sun Valley-Big Sky run, but I seem to remember it being about 5-6 hours in good weather, which is concordant with the Google Maps assessment of 317 miles. Lots of small 2-lane roads which are mostly OK in clear dry conditions, but prolly suck in poor weather, esp at night.
