    New Canon Bodies

    1Ds Mark III

    The Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III is an engineering tour de force which, true to the EOS-1 legacy, redefines the state of the art in no uncertain terms. An entirely new 21.1-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS sensor delivers astounding image quality and creates new photographic possibilities. Dual "DIGIC III" Image Processors work in tandem to speed up data handling and camera operation, while further refining imaging performance. Tough, high-durability body and shutter designs, combined with the unique EOS Integrated Cleaning System, set new standards for professional dependability. Cutting-edge features-such as a large 3.0-inch LCD monitor with Live View Function, and a fast, precise 45-point AF system-make the EOS-1Ds Mark III powerful and versatile. And, of course, the EOS-1Ds Mark III is part of the unparalleled EOS System, which, with more than 50 EF lenses, 15 interchangeable focusing screens, and extensive wireless, remote control and lighting accessories, is the most advanced and powerful digital photography system in the world.

    40D

    Welcome to the next generation of digital SLR photography-the Canon EOS 40D. The EOS 40D combines Canon's tremendous know-how in both the digital and photographic worlds, creating a camera that not only does everything one would expect of a traditional digital SLR, but one that incorporates staggering leaps forward in technological innovation. With new features like Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning System, Live View Function, a more powerful DIGIC III Image Processor, plus a 10.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, a 3.0-inch LCD monitor and more, the EOS 40D elevates digital photography to new heights, enhancing the shooting experience, and delivering images one could only expect from a Canon.

    ---------------------------------

    Damn. For those who were looking to pick up a 20D, your prices have just gotten better. I really like the integrated cleaning feature. That'll make sensor cleaning a lot easier in the field.

    And full frame @ 5fps? That's just sick.

    Notables on the 40D are:

    3in LCD
    6.5 fps
    10 MP
    Built in wireless receiver

    Frankly, I'm more excited about the Powershot G9, with which Canon brings back RAW in the Powershot series. 12 MP, 3 in LCD, IS, Digic III.

    Surprising a lot of these features didn't come out on the 30D. Stoked to see the viewfinder and sealing improvements.

    The 1Ds Mark III looks like it will be $8k: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/can...kiii/page2.asp

    Whereas the 40D looks like it will be $1300: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0708/07...s40d.asp#specs

    The 40D looks mighty appetizing...

    Wow, talk about market saturation.

    In the last ~4 years we have seen from Canon:

    1DII, 1DIIn, 1DsII, 1DIII, 1DsIII, 5d, 10d, 20d, 30d, 40d, 300d, 350d, 400d.

    That's 13 different cameras.

    I don't know if that's good or bad, it just seems....excessive.

    4 years, 13 cameras - but if you look, the tech leaps between each body are pretty big and justified IMHO. I mean, if Dell only did 13 changes in 4 years, they would be out of business.

    Doesn't Apple use this model with the iPod? Soon to be seen from the iPhone?

    They are just servicing the crowd that needs the latest and greatest.
    Seems to be the norm. I am just happy that my D200 still sells for the same price I bought it for a year ago.

    They generally have an 18mo product cycle. 13 cameras makes sense because it is really 13 cameras in the last 4.5 years (4 product cycle release dates) in 5 product lines.

    35mm Professional IDsII->1DsIII
    35mm Prosumer... 5D
    APS-H Professional 1DII->1DIIn->1DIII
    APS-C Prosumer... 10D->20D->30D->40D
    APS-C Consumer.. 300D->350D->400D

    You can also argue that the 1DIIn and the 30D (20Dn) are hardly new products. At PMA in six months you will see the 450D and the 5DII. In a year at Photokina you will see the 1DIV.

    I wouldn't hold your breath. Along with these new camera bodies, Canon realsed another EF-S lens as well and seem commited to the 1.6 crop at the prosumer level. The full frame issue made me hesitate in switching to digital, but actually the extra reach with the conversion factor is a nice thing to have at times.

    I am about to buy my first DSLR and am trying to decide between getting the 30D now or waiting a month for the 40D. I have found the 30D after the current rebate for $1050, the best deal I can find on the 40D is $1399 so there is a $450. Is it worth paying the extra? I really just want a camera to learn on and I don't have an unlimited budget.

    Not so great at math, are we (hint, 1399-1050 does not equal to 450... try slapping this "1399-1050" to google and search... You'll also notice that google works as a handy calculator ).

    That said, I'd prolly try to save up for the 40D, or rethink about getting a Canon in the 1st place and consider Nikon D200 (or the new D300). Unless, you already ahea a big pile of good Canon glass.

    Heck, if you're in a budget, you might want to even consider getting a 20D with a good glass or two for about the same pile of cash as just the 30D/40D. Remember, good glass will far outlive your body, so getting a good but cheap body and quality lens(es) might be the way to go for those with limited funds.

    my thoughts exactly. I'm curious to see the reviews and images on the D300, as if I wasn't so heavily invested in Canon and was looking for a new camera, the D300 would definitely be tempting, as the specs are pretty darn impressive compared to Canons offerings these days at that price point.

    i will third this. the 8 megapixels on the 20D should suffice just fine for someone just getting started and the differences between the 20 and 30 are pretty insignificant for anyone on a budget; there's no real ostensible reason to get a 40D other than dick waving purposes.

    I think buying the best you can afford at that time is not dick waving. It is smart. Now, if you are upgrading cameras every time they change the little number on the front, and telling everyone about it, then you are dick waving.

    True, I suppose mine needs updating: buying outside of your means just to say you have the latest and greatest is dick waving?

    Regardless, I think the 20D is a great body for people on a budget. Hell, even a 10D still cuts it. For me, anyway, the 30/40D updates don't provide much more in the way of features that I don't already have on my 20D; if Canon put in Eye Control like it has on the ELAN 7NE on the 40D, I'd be singing a different tune entirely. Now the difference between a 5D and the 20/30/40D is one that warrants a looking at, but between the prosumer models, they're really all ostensibly the same thing.
