    pshh...that ain't nothin...

    I have:

    1 pair black dress shoes
    4 pair brown street shoes
    5 pair running shoes
    1 pair green street shoes
    1 pair wheat street shoes
    2 pair trail running shoes
    7 (?-ish) pair basketball shoes
    1 pair grey street shoes
3 pair alpine boots (one I use, two beaters)
    1 pair black street shoes
    1 pair MTB shoes
    2 pair water shoes
    2 pair winter boots
    1 pair x-trainers

...and 1 pair of flip flops that I wear every day.

and I've given a good 15-20 pair away to family, friends, or goodwill.

My wife gives me a hard time about it. Most of them are in almost-new condition.

i like to think most of my shoes are sport specific. so they all get used. I don't feel so womanly about it when I think about it that way.

Damn, I don't really wanna know how many I have...

    Let's see...

    2 pairs general mountaineering boots
1 pair high altitude mountaineering boots
2 pairs high performance climbing shoes
    2 pairs comfort climbing shoes
2 pairs of climbing shoes (not comfy enough, nor high perf.)
3 pairs of sandals... one at the glass jar, one at home and one for hiking
2 pairs of flip flops (Good Reefs and cheapo ones for bouldering and hanging around)
    3 pairs of approach shoes
2 pairs of skate shoes / sneakers
1 pair of black dress shoe
1 pair of patent leather shoes to be used with a tux or tail-coat.
    1 pair "generic" dress shoe
    1 pair of sailing wellingtons
    1 pair of sailing shoes
    2 pairs of trail-runners / running shoes
3 pairs of tele-boots (medium high and 2 high ones)
    1 pair of alpines
1 pair of SNS xc-skiing shoes

And most likely a few pairs that I have no recollection of...

yeah, that's how i tried to explain it to my wife this morning when i mentioned that I have more shoes than she. "they're not for fashion, they each have a purpose!!"

    she was unsympathetic.

I go through a pair of shoes every 6 months (lot's of walking/standing around at work.) My problem is I don't seem to throw anything away, so I probably have 15 pairs of shoes that I never wear lying around the house or in our shoe closets in the mud room.

I really need to clean my shit up.

Next time note that you have 2 dress-shoes and a few pairs of casual shoes (sandals/flip flops).. Most of her shoes are most likely in either of those categories.

I run a shoe store. Most of my street/running/basketball shoes were $free or <$30 for me.

I can state with 100% confidence that I have everyone in this thread beat. As someone who spent three years working in the high-end fashion industry, I have acculmulated over 300 pairs of shoes. I had to buy a special thing from Ikea to hold them all, and THAT is full now.

The majority of them were bought at warehouse sales or with a 75% discount. I calculated it out one time, and the retail value for all of them is about $55,000. (My favorite being a pair of 4.5" spike heel croc pumps that retail for $3000, picked em up at the factory for half off, plus my discount, so they cost me about $400.)

The funniest part of the whole thing is that, after I got a job in finance, I haven't needed to purchase a single pair of shoes other than running shoes every six months for marathon training! (oh, and roadie shoes for my clip ins). Another side affect is that I got "over" shoes and don't even care about getting new high-end ones because I know how much the mark ups are. For example, a $400 pair of pumps cost the factory about $60 to make. And if you work for the right company, they're only going to cost you $60. So it's hard to go back to retail prices.

But yeah, I have lots and lots.

I feel the same after just finding out that a co-worker's husband is quite the wine distributor. Just ordered $600 of wine for 1/3 of the cost. Chalk up another score.

    As for shoes, I'm all for Johnston & Murphy. 3 slip-ons (dark tan, dark brown, black) / 1 lace-up (burgundy) / 2 loafers (tan/w/tassels, navy/brown)

A line needs to be drawn between shoes and gear. I would consider most of this stuff gear, including my trail running shoes.
