Looking for good NorCal / Bay Area instructor

My roommate and I have never surfed before and want to take lessons at the beginning of the season. We're both 5'9 150lbs - 165lbs so looking for an instructor similar in build to give us a better sense of what we should "feel" while learning (I know that sounds strange but it made a big difference in our skiing to have someone explain it from that perspective).

Does anyone know of a good teacher in the Santa Cruz / San Francisco / Point Reyes area?

sure, I'll teach you. $100 a day, each, I'll supply the boards.

Go down to Santa Cruz and paddle out at the Lane, I'm sure you'll find someone willing to teach you a few things.

Edit: new shit has come to light...ask for Flea when you paddle out, talked to him and he said he'll be very helpful.

    1) Go to San Francisco

    2) Consult tide book for low tide at the Golden Gate (sub 1.8 foot optimum)

    3) Arrive at Fort Point (under Golden Gate Bridge), stand at edge of sea wall

    4) Yell to anyone surfing you need lessons, especially large blond, hoarse voiced fellow named Simon.

    5) Failing that, try Deadman's (China Beach parking lot). I'm sure there will be many helpful souls there to hook you up.

    Good Luck!

It won't make a difference. You need to just go do it. Surfing is not even remotely like skiing. Go to Cowells in SC, get a log, and just paddle out and watch and imitate. Don't paddle out in good surf or you will be in the way, and don't let your board hit anyone.

Other than that, plan on being shitty for a long time. Learning how to surf if you are not a kid must suck....

    That's true.
There is no season in surfing.
Unless you're referring to certain spots breaking during specific times of the year it's a year round sport.
Skiing is a winter sport regardless of which side of the equator you're on.
If you plan on trying to surf only during summer then you probably shouldn't waste your time or money.
If you go to a surf shop and spend any amount of money greater than the cost of a bar of wax they will probably give you free advise. Surf lessons are for kids and are usually just day care.
Like most skills it's all about the time you put in.
