Not in so many words, but yeah.

I grew up 20 minutes from Manhattan, was out-and-about for 7 years, and lived there for 1 year. Was back there this weekend and realized just how much I don't miss it (aside from some restaurants). I thought I might want to go back for law school and maybe live there again, but no thanks.

And the Hofbrauhaus (now the Mathauser bierstadt has closed) if the weather is bad. From my appartment I could see both the Alps and the center and had to make a decision what to do. Half an hour to G-P. In summer riding up (or down) the Isar plus bike paths all over the place. Driving is crazy and ugly.

But no one has mentioned Milan. Styling, and a couple of hours from the Dolomites (but short ski season). Driving is crazy but that's part of the culture and becomes a recreational activity to itself.

Lived in Seattle and hardly ever skied - local ski hills were worthless
Salt Lake City - can't wait to get out of the dump to go skiing (and fortunately not many of the indiginous people seem to ski especially on Sundays)
San Francisco - drive is a pain but can conceptually be done in 3 hours
Vancouver - weather just ended up p*ss^ng me off
Sacramento - ugh !, but 2 hours from skiing

geneva switzerland. 50 miles from chamonix and 50 miles from switzerland's finest skiing. not only that, but you have the awesome european train system to take you wherever your heart desires.

As far as I remember - Steven's Pass, and Snoqualamie. Never made it to Crystal Mountain, used to hack up to Whistler.

Just looked at this for the first time and I'm suprised at what people consider 'close to skiing'. For me, about 45 minutes is max for skiing 4-5 days a week. Anything further and you slip into the weekend warrior category. It's pretty diffcult to get into ski shape and maintain it at only two days a week plus holidays. Season passes may or may not be worth it at this rate.

This is my primary consideration for residence locales. I guess I'm pretty much a fanatic but I thought there were more of us here. My career is pretty portable also, which is nice.

I relocated last summer and as far as cities go SLC was the obvious choice for the skier (without leaving NA). Wages aren't great here but it's generally cheap, and close to world class skiing. I also considered Reno, Seattle, Denver.

    SLC: 30-45 minutes to Alta/Snowbird, Brighton/Solitude.
Reno: <1 hour to Squaw/Alpine, easy day trips to K-wood.
Seattle: > 1 hour to Crystal, >2 hours to Baker? B-ham's closer.
Denver: 1.5-6 hours to Summit/Vail slightly less to loveland or WP.
San Fran: >3 hours to tahoe. Gimme a break.
    Vancouver: >2 hours to Whistler?
East coast: Skiing doesn't compare to the West.

Am I missing any in NA?

I don't know about you, but I put in 51 days at the home mountain as a weekend warrior this season. And I didn't have to live in [yuck]SLC[/yuck].

    Sacramento (it's the capital of California) - <2 hours on a non-weekend
Los Angeles - Big Bear in 2 hours, otherwise 6 hours to Mammoth
Portland - Mt. Hood in an hour ?
Dallas, when they get their 15 acre dry sky slope in
Tahoe City (it's got "city" in it)

Sacramento (eastern suburbs) and you can get to Sierra at Tahoe or Boreal in approx 1 hour with good roads...if you consider those places 'skiing' which I know you probably wouldn't. All the other good places like Sugar, SquawPine, and KW are 1:30 - 2 hrs away. although Sugar Bowl is pretty close to certain Northern Sacto suburb/towns e.g. Roseville, Auburn, etc.

Meh, it's not so bad here.

I actually only got 50 days this year myself, but I started in mid february due to injury last season. Plus, I don't know what your home mountain is, but IMO, unless it's Jackson or Whistler, it doesn't beat The Bird.

My 'normal' season = >120 days. Can't do that on weekends and holidays.

I'd still have ski slope separation anxiety.
I hear good things about Sugar Bowl, AFA small areas go.

Looks pretty bad to me. Of course, we're down to 120" at 4000', only about a foot of new this week. Yup, better stick to SLC.

Remember the old Noo Yawker cartoon with 2 guys each with a thought bubble and a speech bubble:

One guy, dressed in suit and tie, oxfords, closely cropped hair, clean shaven representing the East Coast.

The other guy with a ponytail, sandals, t-shirt, jeans, sunglasses, goatee representing the West Coast.

East Coast Speech Bubble: "Fuck You!"
East Coast Thought Bubble: "Have a nice day!!"

West Coast Speech Bubble: ""Have a nice day!"
West Coast Thought Bubble: "Fuck You!!"

    It's a classic. If I could find a copy, I'd frame it.
