WASHINGTON, May 15 (Reuters) - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, a leading figure in the religious right of U.S. politics, was hospitalized on Tuesday after being found unconscious in his office in Lynchburg, Virginia, a local newspaper reported.
The conservative Christian leader, who rose from a small-town preacher to become an influential figure in presidential politics, was admitted to Lynchburg General Hospital around noon, the Lynchburg News and Advance reported.
A spokeswoman for Lynchburg General Hospital declined to comment. Officials at Liberty University, which was founded by Falwell and was where he was found unconscious, could not be reached for comment.
Falwell assistant Duke Westover declined to comment.

Falwell survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was hospitalized in February for two weeks with what was described as a viral infection, then hospitalized again in March with congestive heart failure after being found unconscious. At that time he had to be resuscitated by EMTs at the hospital emergency room.
