    Juneau beta

So a buddy and I are contemplating a move to Alaska for the summer. Heard that Juneau has a cool vibe with some decent work opportunities for the summer. Id be looking to spend until Oct out there then head to Jackson for the winter. Thoughts? Hows the job outlook there? What about apartments? Can I realistically save up enough to ski bum next winter?

Our world is full of surrender at the first sign of adversity, do not give up when the challenge meets you, meet the challenge. Through perseverance comes the rewards, the rewards that make life so enjoyable.

there are so so so many jobs here in the summer, but then again the population doubles every day which totally sucks and is why I leave in early may. There will be fairly easily accessed skiing into july this year though

    Summer in juneau:

Think cruise ships. with upwards of 15,000 people getting offloaded a day. Lots of service industry job, driving tourists around, "hike" leader, that kind of shit. Some seasonal biologist type things as well. May be able to get some commercial fishing in, but Juneau isn't really a big fishing community anymore so could be tough for a cheechako.

Juneauites are good people you'll meet plenty of fun folks, but you are essentially on an island so if you want to explore more than the immediate Juneau area it takes a bit of planning. Rents can be high, possibly reducing your ski bum abilities. If you just want to spend the summer busting your ass to make plenty of money and have a somewhat cushy ski bum lifestyle I would maybe recommend looking at a couple of other towns / remote camps.

May and June are nice. July 4 is pretty much the demarcation line for the rain to start back up. Get a pair of Xtra Toughs, Carharts, and don't wear a jacket in the drizzle and everyone will think you are a local that they somehow have never met.

There's lots of seasonal jobs all over the state in the summer. Juneau is a little ... insular, and I'd have a problem with the high tourist to local ratio during the summer. On that note, there's a lot of stuff up near Healy - tourist jobs still, but you're on the road system, and about as close as you can get to Denali.
