Tuning Q. -- base high skis -- unusually quickly?

Noticing that my SAC Scott P3s were acting squirrelly, and they seem to have developed a base high condition pretty quickly. There's maybe 10-12 days on them, lots of small rock hits, so lots of minor edge tuning (no filing yet, just freehand stone & diamond stone w/ edge guide). I've only really tuned the side edges, not the base edges, with the exception of smoothing out burrs on the base edges.

So do ski edges wear down faster on hardpack shit conditions like this year has been so far? Just seemed odd to me that they became base high so quickly.

FWIW, skis have been used mostly for dorking around on groomers as fast as I can go, no rails or park abuse. So all the damage inflicted on them so far has been from hard snow, ice, and bits of rock. And some weeds and the occasional tree branch.

I should probably clarify that I'm not bitching about the skis; they've held up amazingly well considering what they've been subjected to, with only 1 small core shot to show for it.

Just curious, since about all I've gotten to ski this year has been groomed, some of it very very hardpack, with patches of real ice in there too.

I'll check mine when I get home. They've seen about 20 days of the same ( but probably much worse in reality ) conditions that you are describing. Mine have also seemed squirly from day 1.

Thanks - let me know. Mine have felt turny from day 1, but that's because they have lots of sidecut compared to what I skied all last year (i.e., the 2005-06 season when it actually snowed in Tahoe). Once I got used to the sidecut, I liked the P3s a lot. The factory tune felt pretty good too, sharp edges.

So you checked them for flatness when they were new, I assume?

Very quickly, with a true bar. They looked OK. But I didn't really pay that close attention to the edge height vs. base height.

^^ Agreed -- base grind fixes it.

Mostly what I'm asking here is whether 10-12 days of icy groomer use is typically enough to wear down edges to the point where the ski becomes base high.

not that i've ever seen. edges are much much harder than the base material. base high is typically comes from base filing the edges over time. have you checked it with a true bar? if you skis feel squirrelly you could be railed...edge higher than base. or your bases could cupped...its hard to say w/out seeing the boards.

I doubt skiing the skis wore the edges down and made them base high. I am sure if you had looked closely at them when new they were base high. Over filing the base edge could do it, but you said you had not filed them. Most skis are NOT flat out of the wrapper.

Get 'em ground and go ski :-)

I didn't look at them that closely when new, but I did check with a true bar. They are base high now. I haven't tuned the base edges at all, except for knocking down burrs from rock hits -- no other filing/stone work though.

I'll get them stone ground; it'll fix it all. Thanks all-

checked mine today. they still have the factory tune and as far as my untrained eye can tell mine are flat.
