Kids...a semi POW day in MN

Over the weekend, my wife asked me to explain "change for a nickle". So I did, and didn't notice my 7 year old daughter was listening. So last night we were blessed (by Minnesota standards) with 5+ inches of snow, and it was cold snow so very fluffy and nice. Kind of what you'd expect from a "out west" storm. So we took full advantage of this MN pow day and made a bee line for our wopping 200+vert this morning. Sorry, I didn't take pictures but it was pretty decent by Minnesota standards. After other people starting showing up and the lift lines got crowded I noticed my daughter checking out people in line. After a while she tapped this guy on the shoulder and asked him if he had "change for a nickle". She must have asked 10 people and unfortunately never got the response she was looking for. As we were walking out to the car she seemed all bummed. I asked her what was wrong and she said she "never met a magnet"

So for all you "magnets" out there, I'm doin my best to bring another one into the fold. Yes I'm working hard to raise a ski bum. God I'm proud.

Thanks, she is an awesome kid. She's been bugging me to take her on my guys trip to MT, and now an honorary MAGNET, well maybe next year. She can rip, by MN standards. Ranked 28th in the state for both SL and GS in her age group, and we have some great race programs and this is her first year so...perhaps a home out west in the next few years might be in order.

    Thanks again!

    Magnet. That is great.

Edit: I think some other MN "Magnet" ought get in volved in a set up with mnflyfish and his daughter to see her mile when she meets her first Magnet.

I was out yesterday in Wausau. They got about 4 inches according to a lifty. I did find a few spots with ankle deep powder that was a nice treat. I did hear one guy in the lodge complain that it wasn't better groomed to which I just shook my head and kept walking.

I only took a few pictures because it was too damn cold to take my gloves off. Unfortunately none of them are really any good.

Lakelander will be out tonight and my daughter has practice. I gave him a good description of what she is wearing so now it's up to my wife to be there when they run into each other.

    Good Luck,

That's an awesome story... very cute. Yesterday, on the ride home from VT, my 8 yr old daughter said, "Dad, I know what I want to be.... I've decided I'm going to be a professional skier.... like Wayne Wong.... I like him, he's very nice and he's the best skier in the world." I was very happy she likes skiing this much!

    Cute.

How did people respond to her question?
Fighting leads to killing, and killing gets to warring. And that was damn near the death of us all.

They just looked at her kind of funny, or said they didn't have any change. It was kind of funny to watch.

    Good Luck,
    Jay

Oh, side note. She got all the 7 year old girls on her team to start asking the question as well. There will be a lot of confused parents in the Minneapolis area over the next few days.

I spent the day enjoying the "MN Powder day" as well. I had about 5" in the drive way, but I think Welch only got about 3".

Just a quick update. Yesterday, my duagher's team had a race in SE Minnesota at Steeplechase. She hadfinished her SL and GS runs and the two of us took off to do a little free skiing before the awards and results. A guy and his daughter were in the line with us and the Dad hada really nice touring set up, brand new gear (In MN???? well whatever works for you). She asks me a little about the bindings (Naxos), then the light goes on and she taps the guy and asks if he has "change". I spent the next few moments explaining to him her question and referring him to this site. He has hopes of one day taking his new set up on a BC trip. Anyway fella, if you've found your way to this spot, GET WITH THE GAME!!!

As for the race, my daughter had great runs but didn't crack the top 10. I was super proud of her, she skied with more confidence then I've seen before. But she would not have any of that. She went in, saw the results, grabbed me by the hand and we went outside. She looked at me with a very pissed off face and asked me to show her how to get faster. Kinda freaked me out, I haven't seen this competitive side before. So we worked on a couple things, and I have a date this coming Friday with my daughter to explore the secrets of speed, line, etc. Still a little freaked out but pretty proud as well.

    Good Luck,
    Jay
