"I knew in an instant that the three dollars I had spent on wine would not go to waste."
The iphone looks good but i went for a sony erricsson w950i as it does almost all the same things and i got it for free ...... plus it has 3G.
the scroll wheel they use on the side makes navigating it easy and intuitive.
Its the only smartphone i have had that i have kept for more than a week.
I use it mostly for this

Semper in Pulveris .... Only the depth varies
Why the hell no 3G?!? Goddamn..
Did they say anything about the batteries on this thing? I know that Ipod batteries are notorious for sucking balls, and if this thing follows suit... well then you may have some problems on your hands. It would suck if you wanted to take your phone with you- but you had to keep it plugged into your PC to charge the battery.
Well for those of us on crackberries who have cell data plans for work and stuff, we are paying a minimum of $80/month for cell + data. The key feature in the iPhones (and a few others) is WiFi. Then I can use it @ home, airport, etc for e-mail/web/etc and scale back data cell plan. So just in cell data plan savings a month, I will easily save $40/month = $480/year by not having to have the high speed cell data connection through the cell carrier and using the wifi for 80% of the time. There are some devices out there like the Nokia E61 with unsupported wifi, but the iPone looks very well thought out.
Also, as its been stated before, I'm so sick of Verizon crippling cell features and not having Java supported phones (they use the a crippled BREW API) so you can't use J2ME apps like google.
So for me, i don't care about music or things like that, but WiFi+Java make 3g not a huge deal for me. But everyone works or uses their phone differently.
16 hours? Hell, my Nano is supposed to get 18 hours and its not even close to that. They may want to work on the battery a little bit.
I think 18 hours is actually with the thing turned off.
Since it is a quad-band GSM phone, it won't work on either Sprint or Verizon networks since the radio standard is different, even if you unlock it. In the states, you'll be limited to either Cingular or T-Mobile. In terms of the why, GSM is the "Global System for Mobile" standard, that most of Europe and the rest of the world uses. Some countries in SE Asia use CDMA (Verizon and Sprint's standard), but it factors out to like <20% of the world vs. the rest using GSM. The 3G standard that evolves from GSM (typicalled called UMTS in the states) is a version of CDMA, but is still not compatible with the Verizon CDMA standard.
So, I'm sure that Cingular did pay some cash to get exclusive rights, but I think the GSM decision was one made looking globally vs. just in the states. Also, I would be curious to see if a CDMA model would be coming in the future (or a CDMA/GSM model), since the currentnetwork standard limitation takes a lot of people out the market for one of these snazy phones.
All those bells and whistles... and no 3G. Just another shiny Apple toy.
Way to kill it, Apple.
We're sorta like 7-Eleven. We're not always doing business, but we're always open.
you won't be seeing this phone in SE Asia until at least 2008.
push email from yahoo (for now)
this one was tough to keep from talking about. signed my nda like 5 months ago, briefed 2 months ago and had to act all happy when my wife gave me the Pearl for christmas.
will probably wait til the gig size goes up and the price goes down.
fine
First off, 3g (EDGE) sucks balls.
Secondly, they're rolling out something new (call it 3.9G) in Q4 (okay, that's claimed, it'll actually be later like 08) that's faster or as fast as EVDO.
Thirdly, HIGHLY unlikely it'll be CDMA within 2 years because CDMA is like microsoft--qualcomm charges phone companies to use the chip in the phone. GSM is an "open" source code that apple is so fond of.
I'm in network engineering/development at one of the cell compaies (not cingular) and I can't say no more.
Oh yeah, and it sucks we aren't getting the iphone.
Gotta find an unlocked one!
Nice of Apple to introduce the iPhone when they didn't have the rights to the name... I wonder what they're going to do about that?
