    Squaw Going Off!

Finally we are getting ours at squaw. The last two days were the best in 8 months or so. KT is open with everything but rock garden and fingers. Cornice 2 , granite are open. Low snow means everything is super technical and super fun. It's finally on!

Good to hear. How warm did it get today? Did the snow stay dry or will be refrozen crusty shit this weekend?

Yeah, and a good snowboarder already went down--broken back off what? Broken back rock. Landed right on it. People need to pace themselves...It's very much low tide out there.

I beleive that was Ryland yesterday in the C2 area? He's ok , as far as I hear from the Standard folk. Very lucky , shouldn't be hucking his meat wit this low snow. Yes , it is for sure "low tide" so be careful out there everyone!

Ouch, that sucks. Broken back rock must be a pretty big huck this early in the season too?
You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

Huge Bummer! Wow, I haven't been to Squaw in a couple days but Broken Back Rock seems nuts right now! Yeah, let's keep it safe until we get some real snow. I wonder how big that huck was today?
'on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.' So I got that goin' for me,....which is nice!

Ryland's doing alright as in??? Is his back broken or is he just riding the couch for a bit? If you see his tracks, they're kind of ridiculous. Broken back was completely do-able--about 30-35' to a decent 20' wide landing, but on the take-off, he angled across the fall line, directly at the rock. I don't know if it was lack of familiarity with the air or what, but it was simply a bad mistake. Ingrid said she watched it and it was pretty ugly. But fortunately, Ryland is good, and he landed over his feet and compressed. But 90% of people would have splatted and destroyed themselves on the rock.

Yeah I heard he just has a bruised backside , no broken bones. I saw his track today , yeah for sure right at the rock. Was riding with him just before it happened , glad I didn't have to see that.

Sure is bony out there, but the good news is the back-flip jump on Granite is good to go!

Bummer for Ryland, I rode with him on KT that morning and this afternoon sent the skiers left-side of bb and had no problems. At this low of tide, luck is a good thing to have on your side.

So what's the tally now, three broken-backs on broken-back rock?

    No I'm not kidding......

Going off = getting in line at KT at 6:30 only to find out you're not even on the first chair...or Lapping KT in early December in 20" of fresh blower...or hiking from mainline chair to the top of the palisades the first week of May after 18" to do hiking laps on the Chimney with 20 other nuts.....

Going off does not = Ski Corp. scrambling to open any lift that has wind scoured/wind blown crap on it to get as many gapers to buy lift tickets as possible because of very low early season business....finding 50 yard long pockets of pow....skiing tracked, dense windblown pow......

just think about it...it makes sense....

so far, this season blows (snow-wise). Wed was a great day to be sure, and Thur still yielded fresh if you know where to go (this is all at Alpine, can't speak for Squaw), but its hardly "going off"....

I am off to Castle Peak for some BC poking around, maybe I can foind some fresh snow up there today: at least Iwill get out with the dog, so that's something....

The only things "going off" are lift lines, traffic , and angry gapers bitching about lack of lift line control.

Sounds like Utah so far...what a bummer early season so far I've clipped more rocks in the last month than the last 2 seasons combined.

No, not at all, just call a spade a spade. Yeah, its great things are finally starting to open...but conditions are real far from "Going Off".

I guess you are right , I was pretty stoked last night when I wrote this thread. I wanted to get some stoke from other riders who were excited too. Unfortunatley nobody else was stoked. I should have titled the thread "Squaw is getting much better".

I parked 10 feet away from far east yesterday , was on the lift in 30 seconds and there was no line on KT all day.

KT and C2 were for sure not like that , the conditions you describe were probably up to on granite and sibo where the temp has been 25 degrees warmer every day than at the base. I don't know cause I didn't go up there , gaper central on Granite chief most holiday days.

Anyways , was just looking for something positive in NTahoe to speak of , not a bunch of GreenRun like negativity "I'm only satisfied when the conditions are a 10 out of 10"!

Just back from Castle Peak: it was surprisingly good in the shaded tree areas, some powder (!) was found and actually got a little spring like in the main bowl as the sun was baking it all day. Corn like almost, but then down lower, it got like cement.

Didn't need to break out the skins, I just boot packed it to the top. All in all a great day out as it was blue bird, and Jake (my Lab) was stoked to be included.

Too bad I wan't there I would have stompoed broken back, thats my line I have done it in every conceivable condition about 1000 times. You really need to take off slow in low and hard pack conditions and catch the tranny and spot your landing. If you take your time you can do it in any condition! MOnday or Tuesday I will slay it. Hope Ryland is ok, be careful out there its early still don't blow your load yet.
