    Canon A610 "Cannot detect camera"

Tried downloading some pics off the camera last night. Normally, once hooked up, the camera software pops up and away I go. Manually opened the software, got the "cannot detect camera, check connections...."
Looked through the manual and browsed through the software trouble shooting. No help there. Can't figure it out.

Try a different USB cable? Get the camera port tested? (can a camera shop do this?) Bought the camera in February, '06, but off an ebay store. Send back to Canon?

    try a different usb port.
    try another computer

does the computer detect when you plug the camera in?
The only thing worse than the feeling that you are going to die is the realization that you probably won't.

When you set the camera switch to play, plug it in and turn it on,

-- the lens will stay closed if it detects a computer connection
-- the green LED on top turns off whenever it's communicating with the computer.

If it's doing that, then it's (probably) your computer.
If it's not doing that, then it might be the cable or the camera.

You can try a different USB port too.
If you have a problem & think that someone else is going to solve it for you then you have two problems.

Tried a different USB port. Computer in not automatically detecting the camera and when opening the Canon software, can't detect the camera from there either. Tried new batteries. Tried all the different switching, view mode\shoot mode, plug cable in and turn on camera, turn camera on then plug in.

Two things I haven't tried, but will: Uninstall\reinstall the software. Install software on another computer and try it.

Things were fine the last time I downloaded photos, last week. Don't know what is up. Got an email into the Canon support site, haven't heard from them as of yet. Thanks for ideas.

SnoDogg: the green LED stayed on, I'll look at the lens cover and see what it does.

If it's not the camera's battery, check the Canon driver that's residing on your computer hard disc. It sounds like it got corrupted. You may have to reinstall it.

I've always pulled the cards and stuffed them in whatever card reader was around. Since card readers are cheap, this might be good to try.

And, since the A610 records .jpgs, you don't have to use the Canon software. Irfanview works fine, for freeware. Lightroom is killer too, and free, but only for a short while longer. If you need to do any editing, I'm sure you can find an Adobe Elements disk; they ship free with a lot of scanners and cameras. I may even have a legit CD to pass on, as I use Photoshop.

I had trouble with my canon until I was told the following simple thing: the camera must be set on the "review pics" mode, not the "take pics/video" modes. I have a feeling that will do it for you.

Is the program 'stimon' running? That needs to be running on your computer for it to detect the camera.

If it's not running click Start=>Run and type in stimon.

    Nope.

Thank you. Will try this and the reinstall software idea.

I had this happen and found that the port on the camera was wrecked. Had to send it back. I hope it's not that problem on yours. The good news was that they fixed mine and had it back to me in like 2 weeks.

I'd send it in with a picture of your naked girlfriend smiling and holding a sign that says "canon service techs kick ass"...you know, in the memory there.

    couldn't hurt

    Thumbs up

Got the camera back. Took a little over 30 days, not bad considering it was over the holidays.

They warrantied it, so that was cool. They actually sent me a different A610, different serial #, looks brand new, errrr, remanufactured. All in all, pretty kick ass service by Canon and a big rasberry to my local Canon dealer who stated "No way that is warrantied" . Glad I sent it in myself missy.
