That's the headline CNN used when talking about the ridiculous murder rate.
and to think...exactly two years ago I was THIS close to taking a corporate job in south jersey and living a few minutes away in Philly.....
instead I moved to tahoe. :D
Philadelphia > CNN
CNN = teh suck
Philly is a dump. Sorry for those that live there. Not sorry for saying that, im just sorry for you guys.
Too many animals in one place and they kill each other. Laws of Nature. Mankind isn't smart enough to figure that out.
2 years ago, a friend of mine, a Philadelphia Police Officer was shot dead while responding to an armed robbery with hostages.
My brother in law is a Phila homicide detective, he more than doubles his salary in overtime every year.
There are fifteen year olds capping one another after an argument.
Everyone packs in Philly including my 88 year old father who shoots twice a month at the local range to keep his skills up.
I am in the city at least 3 times a week doing work in some of the worst areas there. I have to get in & out by 10 am or all bets are off. Everyone I know who does what I do for a living is licensed to carry. I am not and don't want to be.
Just as bad but not talked about is the armed robbery statistics.
Rapes are also up.
Philly government is corrupt. The mayor is only interested in lining his own pockets with his well documented "pay to play" schemes. On two separate occasions, the feds tried to bring his house down and each time, the mayor called on the national "race mongers" to scream and holler until they went away.
I have been safer in some of the worlds worst 3rd world shit holes (Zimbabwe for one) than I am in Philly.
For all the gun carrying here, I can not recall one occasion where an armed civilian saved his life by shooting it out with a bad guy.
I have great situational awareness and try not to box myself in anywhere.
Whats sad is my wife and I have not been in town to have dinner in many years. Most of those I know who left many years ago, will not go back for any reason. This contributes to the downfall of what was, only fifteen years ago, a great city.
As the inner city population continues to expand, the crime is now spilling over it's borders. Surrounding townships have been forced to ramp up police patrols in an effort to repel the invaders back into the city.
It is a grim situation with no hope for improvement.
But everyone has a gun--NRA tells me that's the formula for a safe city! WTF? What about all those stories of people shooting their way to safety, foiling crimes with their guns, yadda yadda...
Hopefully some of these mayors will be successful in suing the gun shops that make situations like this possible. Completely disgusting that this is what we've come to in the U.S.
In high school, on my way into Franklin Field for the Penn Relays, I saw my first chalk outline for a dead body. But we won our heat and I got to say hi to Bill Cosby, so it balanced out.
yes, forget about going after criminals because that's too much work. let's go after those evil guns, then lets go after banning cars because of drunk drivers. before this gets into a gun control thread, just remember... Philly blows and that's that. Remember when the mayor firebombed the Move group and burnt down a city block? That was rad.
No, we go after both criminals and guns, and the criminals who sell/run the guns. Hard to make gun laws work when you've got an easy supply from those stupid states without gun laws.
And yeah, I remember seeing the MOVE thing go down, that never really made sense to me at all. Never before nor since have I heard of a city PD dropping a (potentially-to-actually) incendiary device on a house from a helicopter to deal with the people inside (I think that's what happened, anyway).
Damn good cheesesteak sandwiches there, though. I'll risk the gunshot to get one of those.
(in my most intimidating, Charlton Heston impersonation) you can have my gun when you pry it from my cold... dead... hands.
How about just putting up a bunch of signs that say Gun Free Zone? That will stop the criminals from taking their evil tools of death on premise. Solved.
Now, those cheesesteaks give me nothing but heartburn and me and fellow Citizens for a Heartburn Free Amurica will try our darndest to ban them.
Think of the children!
i met a marine today with a "guns dont kill people, I kill people, semper fi" sticker on his car. I was helpless but to complement him on his awesome sticker.
granted, Move was a violent, horrible group of criminals that "hunted" citizens of Philly and had to be stopped.
but you also may remember Frank Rizzo, the Philly Police Comish at the time. He didn't put up with shit and outfitted the Philly cops in storm trooper leather, knee-high boots and shoot-to-kill orders. That was the safest the city had been since colonial days.
unfortunately - for your Philly denziens - your town is now run by feel-good politicos who worry about what Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton might say about their next big anti-crime measures... namely, going after CRIMINALS who commit CRIMES. what a concept:eek:
so instead of blaming the person who pulled the trigger, your comsih and mayor now blame the inanimate object. brilliant!
What else do you expect from your Mayor who declared, "The Brothers and Sisters run this town now..."? What a racist POS!
question... did the availability of bricks cause the LA riots??? Guns don't cause crime... scumbags do.
I used to work with juvenile delinquents from Philadelphia. I talked to many about guns and here are some things I found out over the years:
- yes, pistols are easy to get ahold of-mostly junk stuff like Taurus especially
- I never interviewed a kid who bought a gun legally (or had an adult buy one) they were all black market guns
- contrary to what the Democrats say, they DID NOT use AK-47s or military rifles for crimes or gang violence. You cannot conceal a rifle thus they have virtually no advantage in Philly
- there were two general uses for attacking gang rivals with pistols:
a) spray and pray from a distance (emptying the entire magazine)
or
b) walking up coldly, surprising a rival and shooting him in the face at point blank range.
* Other than this, there seemed to be zero emphasis on accuracy. In many of the stories, it sounded like they were more excited about how much noise the gun made by rapid-firing wildly at a front porch or car, rather than taking careful shots.
- it was common to meet kids who had been shot by 9mm or a .22 multiple times and had lived (I saw medical reports and scars)
- I never met a kid who had been shot with a .45 and lived :D
I don't know when the last time you where here but you don't shit about Philadelphia. It's 10 and I'm still at work and when ever the fuck I leave I don't have to think twice about being safe because everyone knows where the shootings are taking place and it ain't center city. Look at the 2006 murder statistics by location at the inquirer.

Second, sort by race and that tells you a whole lot about what this is all about. The vast majority of this is black on black crime and probably 50% of it is people that know each other, so it isn't like Suzy Chapstick is getting blasted at the Terminal Market out of no where.
Philly is not a ghetto but certain areas are real shitty. It has always been that way and if stay out of those areas you are fine. I can't think of another major city that is so segregated, it really is a city of neighborhoods.
You definitley know what your talking about, but city police don't just roll over on this because they don't want to be viewed as bad guys. To be frank alot of the time they have zero information, just a body and no one tells them shit. Secondly, they are pretty understaffed but trust me if you fuck with them they will bring the heat.
You're spot on, Armada. But are they no less victims because of their race? They're still dead.
Philly remains one of my top 10 cities... evar. But I knew where to go and where not to. But I have zero tolerance for people vicimizing anyone, let alone "their own".
Peace!
Well, the Rockies certainly murdered the Phillies. :p
You really need to learn how to read. I'm not trying to be insulting, but you do seem to have inordinate difficulty at understanding fairly basic statements and what they mean. Working on reading comprehension could help you with this, and then maybe you wouldn't be so misunderstood yourself.
Maybe you should get someone to explain posts to you before you try to respond (I really don't feel like doing it, but maybe you know someone who could).
That is all.[/wasted effort]
i was almost a part of those statistics.
thank god i took off as soon as i graduated from temple.
Grew up in Wilmington, Del & had lots of family in Philly.
In the 80's we called it Filthadelphia.
"Is there a problem, Officers?"

Even Santa packs heat in Philly!

This is totally true. As with any big city, there are good neighborhoods and bad. Philly has some zones that are scary as hell, but if you're like most of the people on this board then you'll never be in one of them. Obviously sometimes there's violent crime in safer neighborhoods (muggings and robberies), but I lived there for three years when in law school and not one person I knew was robbed or threatened that entire time.
When I was still competing nationally for swimming I remember seeing car fires from the stands of the pool at Lasalle. That was quite the ambiance for a national swim meet.
Just to add insult to injury:

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Philadelphia is home to the least attractive people in the United States, a survey of visitors and residents showed on Friday.
The city of more than 1.5 million people was also found to be among the least stylish, least active, least friendly and least worldly, according to the "America's Favorite Cities" survey by Travel & Leisure magazine and CNN Headline News.
About 60,000 people responded to the online survey -- at www.travelandleisure.com -- which ranked 25 cities in categories including shopping, food, culture, and cityscape, said Amy Farley, senior editor at the magazine.
For unattractiveness, Philadelphia just beat out Washington DC and Dallas/Fort Worth for the bottom spot. Miami and San Diego are home to the most attractive people, the poll found.
But Farley pointed out the results don't mean people in Philadelphia are ugly or the city is a bad place to visit.
"We were asking people to vote on attractiveness, not unattractiveness. Travel & Leisure editors believe there are a lot of attractive people in Philadelphia," she said.
"The relative attractiveness of its residents is only a minuscule factor in evaluating a city's merit."
Philadelphians' self-esteem has been undermined by national surveys showing they are among the fattest people in the United States. The American Obesity Association ranked the city in the top 10 for overweight people every year between 2000 and 2005.
And sporting pride in a city known for the fierce loyalty of its fans has been hurt by not having had a national champion in any of its four main sports since the 76ers won the National Basketball Association title in 1983.
I recently saw a documentary about gun running on a CBC program called the Passionate Eye (produced in Canada). The show detailed how guns are bought legally in Georgia and then driven up I95 to places like Philly and NYC where they're sold on the street illegally. Something like 90% of guns involved in murders up north were traced back to a handful of gun shops in Georgia.
Apparently, in Georgia, one is allowed to purchase as many guns as they can per transaction, so people are literally filling up trucks full of guns legally and then distributing them amongst gangs up north.
One ex-gun runner they interviewed said gun running was a huge $ maker for gangs who sell the guns on the street for 2-3 times more than what they paid. They recruit young men with no record to drive down to Georgia to make the runs. If someone gets caught and goes to jail, they find someone else willing to take the risk to make some fast cash.
The show traced how one gun purchased legally in Georgia made its way north illegally through gangs in Philly, NYC and then on to Toronto where it was involved in a murder.
An ATF detective interviewed estimated the murder by gun rate in northern cities like Philly and NYC would drop exponentially if Georgia would follow suit with most states and institute stricter regulations on gun purchasing.
Nobody is saying to take away the guns or stop selling them, just limit the number of guns sold in a single purchase. Why is that such a wrong thing amongst the gun lobbyist?
More good news today about Philly. Apparently they are ugly people as well.

I understand that. By gun lobbyist, I meant the individuals in this thread quoting Charltin Hestin and/or the various people blathering on about their rights being violated who have no stake in gun manufacturing or sales that probably don't even own a gun themselves, yet spew gun lobby rhetoric for some unknown reason. whats up with that?
They're paranoid idiots.
