Looking for a mitten, which must have some internal fingers.
I've searched: people like Hestra (big bucks), Cabelas gauntlets (cheaper). Marmot Randonee ski mitt is out because of no internal fingers.
Questions
Do the Hestra's mittens have internal slots for fingers?
Has anyone tried the Black Diamond Mercury mitten for skiing?
Any other suggestions?
why do you need the internal fingers? i don't get that concept as it seems to defeat the purpose of mittens in the first place. anyway, burton makes some nice mitts w/ the internal fingers.

Yeah, I think the internal fingers are a compromise offering better feel than a mitten, but more warmth than a glove.
It's her personal preference, which is hard to argue with.
I have a pair of the Burton's and they work well for me. She didn't like the Burton mitts that she tried.
cayenne pepper on her fingers should help increase blood flow.

yup, im w/ ya on that! my wife returned the burtons because of the finger slots. she ended up w/ a pair of rei brand which i don't think will be warm enough as she gets cold easily...but, i kept my mouth shut and we'll buy different one's if they don't work!Quote:

i have a pair of boiled wool inserts w/ a climb high over mitt...i can only wear those when its way below zero...toasty!

You are right. I have heard of that, mainly for the feets, though.
May use that as a last resort for the hands, as I can think of some interesting
consequences from putting pepper on the hands.

My wife also had problems with gloves and cold hands, and mittens were too clumsy. She's been using a trigger mitt shell and a fleece innerglove and has been good down to 0F.
I'll find out what brand/model she's using and let you know tomorrow.

Yeah TomK, that Black Diamond Mercury Mitten has a 3 finger primaloft liner inside a standard mitten shell. I am leaning that way, but wondered if there were very bulky or not.
I suck at the internet, otherwise I would post a pic of those mitts (with liner removed).
Wife's hands get cold (mittens help)...
Does that add to shrinkage?

There's a band you can buy which goes on the writs and is intended to open the blood vessels and capillaries into the hand, making it warmer. Supposed to work pretty well.

really warm, really durable, and just generally awesome.
my wife swears buy a pair of KOMBI mittens, with internal fingers. SHe also just picked up a pair of Cloudveil for warmer days; same internal fingers, just a little thinnner.
We tried all kinds of mitts, and it didnt have much effect. Then we changed our logic.
Keep the body super warm and the extremities wont get cold. This season the Missus got a 750 fill down vest to wear under the gore tex. Working like a charm.
I wear a OR gore-tex mitt with a seperate fleece glove underneath. I have a couple pairs of fleece gloves and a pair of mitts (different weights) so I choose one or a combo to keep my hands warm.
The mitt outershell can be a pain in the ass somedays when it decides to bunch up, but most of the time I've had good luck with it.

Just ordered the Black Diamond Mercury Mittens. I will put my wife's review here later. We'll buy the heat packs. We are also picking up an insulated jacket for her, since her shell fits too close for many base layers.
I am thinking she (therefore we) should be in pretty good shape for cold, deep days in the future (touching wood, anti-jinx per lemon boy).
Now this is what you need! Good down to -50 apparently :biggrin:
