I am worthless and weak and in over my head (TDR)

and I'm going to do something about it.

I signed up for gordy's maggot camp a few days ago, and it's slowly been hitting me that I just might be in over my head. Maybe I'm freaking out, maybe not, but I just don't seem comfortable in my abilities anymore. Normally at the begining of a season, I am comfortable with my level, knowing the first couple days will hurt, but it all comes back quickly. Now I'm just scared for some reason (probably because I haven't been on snow yet this season).

I started doing more pushups, situps, squats etc. and it became painfully apparent that I am out of shape. Then I went running last night in the cold. After 2 miles I thought I just might die out there.

I guess working long hours for the past year has served as an excuse to get home, crack a beer, and sit in front of the idiot box more and working out less. No more. In two months I will be in a class instructed by people who I consider personal heros. I will not make an ass of myself by being a fat weak gaper, bringing down the camp for everyone else. The reason I signed up was for much more than to improve my skiing, it was to improve myself.

I will work out every night until (and after) the camp.
I will ski and ski hard every chance possible.
I will kick ass at the camp.

Please help me out by bumping this every now and again, or flame away at the fat nerd with glasses. Either way, it will remind me that I have not been doing enough to push myself to become better. Sorry for the diary post. Commence flaming and posting of truffle shuffle pics.

Yeah, I've gotten tubby too. Too much sitting around waiting for my doc to tell me I can go at it again, and not enough taking advantage of what I am allowed to do.

I will ride my bike to work for the remainder of the week, and I will not buy a new parking pass on campus when mine expires at the beginning of January. I will lose the 20lbs I've put on since the accident.

And, above all, I will be fit enough to not kill the stoke when allowed to return fully.

Oh, I dunno. I would be less worried about the fact that I'm out of shape and somewhat MORE worried about the terror-inducing terrain he's going to force you to ski, imo.

It's easy to fall into that trap. I've been fighting it for what seems an eternity now. After the ACL I gained 30#'s and it took the balance of the summer to drop em. With the achilles I was stuck in bed for 10 weeks unable to do anything. I got my diet uber tight and ended up about even. Once I got the green light to start doing anything I jumped on it and have not looked back. By the time I'm 100% I should be leaner than I've been in years.

Stay focused on the end game.

There's the key: you've got two months to get in shape. That's plenty of time to make some huge strides if you make a strong commitment. Work out six days a week and watch the diet and you might be surprised what you can get accomplished. Good luck Private Pyle!! :biggrin:

Or you could send me to the camp to pose as you. And then everyone would comment on how tall and thin you've gotten since the last time they saw you.

The past two weeks:

1.5 miles a day running in the cold, dry desert air at 7.5 mph pace
95 push ups a day
95 sit ups a day
95 squats a day
95 looooooong seconds of leg lifts a day

-5 lbs. over xmas :D
Skiied only 2 days :(

Ready to increase to 2.5 miles
125 of all excercises (maybe not push ups)

Was doing the deck of cards workout. Each suit = exercise type, number = quantity. Now K,Q,J = 20 thus 125 total.

I gained 8 lbs on Thanksgiving...and then lost it the next morning...

I fucked up both my ankles this year once in the spring playing soccer and in August while acting like a drunken asshole and flipped a golf cart. The #30 I gained during this time really fucked up my skiing.

Feeling pretty fucking bummed that my commitment has been sagging. Any advice from maggots that have trained for years? Marathon runners/Tri-athletes? How do you keep that level of commitment to achieve what you need to do through long stressful work days and wedding planning?

Now to motivate DG too. Sorry can't help it.

Get the F outta the office and put some tool bags on full time! Lugging 20-30# bags around while building something is a workout, trust me. Do it 8 hrs a day 5 days a week. You will see a difference. Get out there and get dirty and work your ass off!

It ain't easy! When do you workout? I think the best time is the morning that way you don't have time throughout the day to make up excuses why not to workout. I don't follow my own advice, but I do think it works--as long as you've got the dedication to get out of bed early.

Get a bike. I didn't ride much this past summer because of the new job, and I think my skiing has suffered a bit. My core is pretty damn strong from pilates, but my legs aren't where they should be.

Anyway, biking has helped my skiing a lot. It was one of the big reasons I made big strides last season. Also, I can't run anymore. Football killed my knees and running is just too painful because of the impact. Biking allowed me to get the same benefits and them some without trashing my knees even further.

I'm not saying you have the same issues, but you're a big guy and I can't imagine running is easy on your knees, ankles, etc.

No matter what, you'd better get back to work or I'm gonna heckle your ass at the camp. :D

Also, make sure you are doing some yoga/pilates/stretching type deal. Flexibility , balance and core strength are key for skiing. Until you actually like working out, it will always be a grind. Try going before work if possible. Don't let a day go by without doing anything even if it means just a casual bike ride.

To whomever was wearing 30lbs bags WTF! You shouldn't need to haul that much stuff if you're a framer. Go thought your bags at lunch at take out all the stuff that has randomly collected in there. Run a set of Occidental Oxy Lites and a Stilleto and your back will thank you.

Put on you sousie and go jog around the block.

Or, take Arty's advice. Get a decent bike and use it.

And get your core in shape. That's been the hardest part for me to tackle in my recovery. It also makes the biggest difference in daily life.
