My picks:
Skullfucker (Skeleton w/ Roses entwined) - live, excellent sound and tight arrangements. it has always been my favorite.
Live Dead - classic SanFran street party set.
Workingman's Dead - classic; mix of influences; blues/boogie/jugband/bluegrass.
American Beauty - classic; acoustic w/ great vocal harmonies.
One for the Faithfull - live acoustic set. small hall w/ intimate sound.
Europe 72 - another live set but electric. "China Cat" turns into "Going down that road..." not bad at all!
Wake of the Flood - very good, too. "Eyes of the World" is a favorite.
I would explore that deadhead link that was provided. plenty of info, links, and tunes.

grateful dead/grateful dead (a live album) which contains the screamingest johnny b goode ever recorded (ie: the greatest Rock N Roll song ever)
American Beauty & Workingman's Dead. The albums that started it all.
Cornell '77 (which I imagine is now a Dicks Pix) got me and many others pretty psyched a few moons ago.
The new Dicks Picks from 71 are awesome!

How about some Jerry performing at Squaw Valley? It's not Dead stuff - more like bluegrass if you can dig it. Jerry with David Grisman (mandolin player from Old and In the Way among others) and a couple of songs with Bela Fleck from '91. The Friend of the Devil is off the fucking chain.

Flac and shn are just compressed files.
You can download programs for both and you just drag the files into the program window and they turn into wav files ready to burn to cd. (you have to hit decode in flac)
You need to download 2 things for shn but it's really really easy.

Europe 72 is a great starter CD. Live From the Vault Vol.1 is great too. I personally perfer all live Dead recordings before I'd even think of buying the studios. Dick Picks are great, Volumes 10 and 12 are my favorites. Some of them have way TOO MUCH DONNA G. on them and thus have made me a huge Brent and 80s Dead fan as well. Find yourself a good copy of Scarlet Begonias into Fire on the Mountain to start yourself off right. Also get some Live Jerry solo albums...Holy Smoke!

Either format works. I use dbamp or mkwact to convert to .wav to burn CD's or .mp3 to sync on my ipod. Seems like flac is getting more popular.
