Medical/shoulder help/advice needed stat

Ok so after talking to 2 of my favorite mags from the top of hidden peak and declaring what a glorious day it was @ Snowbird ( remember kids Pride goeth before a fall)
I took a nasty high speed digger.
no idea what happen but I went down hard on my left side and was screaming like a little girl dragging a worthless left arm behind me as I tried to arrest.

I had seperated my shoulder.
Damn that hurts, so a stab of pain later I get the orgasmic relief of the shoulder going back where it belonged. a nice man bought me a ski and pole I had left a few hundred feet behind
so I skied down took off my gear and am now at home.
the shoulder still hurts and left arm is spazzy, not really obeying all my commands.
My ROM is good.
so should I go to the hospital?
as I remember last time I did tis MTBing about 8 years ago all the doc did is give mea brace, write me a scrip and say good luck.
Now I have health insurance, and I can always use a new scrip, but the who knows how long a wait and the who knows how much outta pocket disuade me.
so DO I need to see a doc?
I am going to take some pot now. any advice is appreciated.

Nice to see you adhering to the "post, then smoke pot" regulation, Woodsy.
I did mine like that once, but didn't have insurance and was gimped for years.
Take advantage of your med and get an MRI, some good pain pills, smoke some more, then post, and tell us how it all turned out.

You do not need to go to the emergency room. However, you do need to see a doctor in the next few days. They will x-ray to make sure nothing is broken, do simple tests for nerve damage or torn ligaments and/or tendons.

Are you sure it was a seperation or dislocation?

I have suffered one dislocation, 2 sublexes, and a busted clavicle - all on my left shoulder.

I am the king of rehabbing my left rotator cuff.

At least find a nice young lady willing to play doctor.

my left shoulder needs to cach up to the right from the bike wreck seperation i mentioned in the 1st post and breaking that scapula 2 years latter.

If your insurance covers it, go to TOSH. One of the docs over there is a shoulder specialist, he checked out my shoulder after a MTB wreck. IMHO, for sports related injuries I'll go nowhere else.

apt is with my normal doc.
TOSH would be good and maybe needed later.

Sublex is where it gets yanked out of place, and pops back in on its own. Makes all sorts of awful noises.

Definitly go see an ortho type doc. From the sounds of it McWop has it pegged as a sublux.

That alone basically tells me the shoulder either partially or fully dislocated and then went back in place on its own. This basically stretches and possibly tears the ligaments that stabilize the shoulder with the possibility of tearing the labrum (cartilage ring around the socket).

Basically you need to be in a sling and rest that shoulder for ~4-6 weeks before going to rehab to strengthen the rotator cuff, shoulder and scapular muscles. Surgery may be avoided if you take care of it.

I discoed once telein' and a few times paddlin'. Mine subluxes real easy now. I can usually get it back in place myself but when I can't i go to the chiropractor. I went to a couple docs who have tried and sometimes succeded while causeing me some pain, I used to have a physiotherapist put it back in for me but I don't live there anymore. The chiropractor pops it in painlessly every time.

Get some heat on it then try moving it into different positions and making different motions, you may find the right motion to put it back. I accidentally found the position to get my shoulder back in place while whipeing my ass.

I hate that "++ vibes" shit. Woodsy, don't go into the ER, because they'll just send you home with a shoulder immobilizer and some pain medication. Are you going to your regular doctor because you need a referral? If you can, I would go straight to an ortho doc, since that's what they see all day long.

The problem with going to primary care first, is that they're not used to seeing orthopedic injuries that need orthopedic care, and sometimes they drag their heels in giving referrals. If your insurance plan is one that requires a referral, mention how the shoulder is making noises, you don't feel like you're arm is following commands, and the words "numbness" and "tingling" are ususally the ticket to a referral as well. Good luck!

My $.02

The process should go as follows:

1. Hurt yourself (check)
2. Smoke to calm nerves/ease pain (check)
3. Don't bother w/ ER (check)
4. Go to doc. If you can raise your arm with the forearm at a 90degree angle WITHOUT feeling like its going to come out (allow doc to try this, don't do it yourself)- begin rehab. If you DO feel like its loose and weak- get a referral for an MRI
5. Ortho evaluates MRI, surgery and rehab OR just rehab ensue.
6. Smoke repeatedly throughout process up to rehab wherein you'll need a bit more focus to stay up on 3/week PT sessions.

I go under the knife in 2 weeks for a torn labrum, but I was very careless about care after the initial injury, so surgery became inevitable. Good Luck. Heal Fast.

Dude, are you sure everything is properly in place? Do you have any type of tingling or numbness in your arm/fingers? Is it a dull throbbing pain or a sharp sting? It is quite common (so I've heard) for shoulder dislocations/subluxations to pinch nerves and such. Permenant damage can result. You're prolly fine I just wanted to throw this out. FYI, this is all coming from a guy with a fair amount of metal hardware in his left shoulder.

Get an MRI first.
Then see specialist and he can see what happened to the soft tissue.

Says the guy with mulitple dislocations and two shoulder surgeries.

If you damaged your labrium (The soft tissue which holds the bone in place), which is what I did, you'll want to get this fixed before constantly popping it in and out multiple times does additional damage.

Also PT can do a lot to solve the problem if your doctor doesn't see extensive soft tissue damage.

I did not read the whoel reply because I just got out of shoulder surgery the other day myself and had I gone to the doctor after my first dislocation 5 years ago, I would have had about 20 less dislocations and they would not have had to anchor cartilege back to my bone that I ripped off. This surgery is a bitch because I did not go in after the first dislocation. The doctor said after one dislocate you more often than not, need to slight capsular shift to at least tighten up the tendons you stretch out. Anyways, I am on drugs and make no sense.

I'm typing one handed as a result of having shoulder surgery for torn cuff and labrum from a ski fall (it's all in gimp central). get it mri'd and looked at by an ortho/specialist.

I dislocated my right shoulder skiing two years ago. I had it reduced in the ER. I never had any formal PT, just informal stuff. I have limited problems with it now. I am able to climb, etc, without difficulty. But I am always aware of certain motions and anatomical tweaking that can cause it to dislocate again.

Most surgeons won't consider surgery until several dislocations have occurred. Hopefully that won't be an issue for you.

the end of the arm at the shoulder, maybe a slight tear in the RC but most likely just agitated from the break
immoble at least 4 weeks before PT even starts.
should not of had it out of the sling @ all.

He gave me loads of good advice when I did the same thing on a mountain bike last summer. PT 3 days/week for 5 weeks did me a world of good to recover it back to 95%.
