It sort of depends in my experience - if you're somewhere real popular with a popular trail (like Berthoud) and hacking it up to no end, then it pisses off the skinners to no end. If you're only one or two snowshoers out of a larger group of skinners and you're not postholing very badly, then it's barely noticeable If you're breaking trail for the skinners, then it's great!
Going down a skin track (can't imagine why you'd do that ever, even if you're a knuckle dragger) is always BAD.

I ski and board and want to learn to drop my knee this year :)
I have a great bc setup for skiing but I haven't pulled the trigger on a split board yet cause I bought some Gotamas instead.
When the bc snow isn't primo I usually take out the board it handles crust and heavy snow better. I have friends that only board and only have snowshoes and I always wonder if we are pissing anyone off when shoeing in the skin track.
So I guess we aren't cause If we ever start to sink alot and post hole we always move off the track.Quote:

it's not THAT bad. I'm always skinning and I don't really mind snowshoes as long as it's not like 7 or 8 dudes. straight bootpacking though is super shitty.

Doing anything in a skin track besides skinning is like pissing in the holy water in the vatican...it is one of the most sacred parts of the backcountry experience...if you see someone doing this, set your beacon to receive...if you're lucky, you can give 2 lectures for the price of one!

I'll whip this dead horse too. The correct answer is "YES, it is bad form." However, if you are supplying the dope it can be acceptable.
Convince someone to lay a snowshoe track about 10 feet to the left of the skin track and it will turn into your own stairway to heaven.

It is. Postholing is worse.
Just like in golf with sand traps, proper etiquette mandates that you restore the track to its original state if you step in it. Make sure you have a shovel.

ABSOLUTELY. Straight boot packing is worse, but unless the skin track is solid, snowshoes still put holes in it. Not many things piss me off more.

Ten to one says that the early bird who put the track in had a big grin on his face and never considered it suffering. People who set tracks get there early for a reason. So rewarding to slice through a fresh blanket of snow, knowing that no one is ahead of you, always a move ahead of the masses, and going home about the time that the track wreckers show up.
Got to agree with Foggy on this one. Best idea is to stay off the track, makes everyone happier in the end, at least all the skinners. If you're snowshoeing, just buy a split board, it's better.Quote:

I try to take the high road and not worry about it. It does suck, especially if there is a good incline. One thing that I have noticed in the Wasatch is that there are certain places where no one bootpacks or snowshoes, so it is irrelavant. If I'm going up Cardiff, I expect to see postholing in the skin track, so it is a bonus when it is posthole free.
