seeking suggestions: 90-100mm ski

Hi,

Im looking for some suggestions for a good all moutain / powder ski that will handle all conditions, including the groom. Im going to Japan early next year so i want a ski that ill enjoy over there, but also something that will handle Australian conditions (where i live) where we dont always get a heap of snow.

Ive already got a pair of Line Darksides which are 73mm underfoot, so i got the ice / hard pack side of things sorted (tho after a few 180's on them, the backs are bent! watch out...)

So yeah, im probably looking for something round the 90-100mm range. I've been told the Pocket Rocket is a good ski, but to be honest im looking for something a little stiffer than the blue noodle. Dont really want a ski thats 100+ cos then its gonna be useless in anything but deep powder & crud, so im looking for something thats more versitile & has a good rep.

v-ex (sommone had to day it), the stiffest and least sidecut,
Tankers, they dont like ice and are work in moguls
sugar daddies, everyone likes them
Seth Pistol, by far the softest of the bunch but seem to handle very well

Seldon can't offer advice, in fact his parents still tell him which skis they are going to buy him.

Seldon, if someone such as Deuge asks for ski suggestions, provides details about what sort of skiing they like doing, what ski they currently have etc and genuinely wants to know of some other skis that they should look at.

Then get some V-Ex's...or Some Goat's...or a Karma...(you get the idea)

Honestly, except for powder, the gear guides are useless. The only ski over 90mm in SKI is the Apache Chief, and thats not much of a help when there's only one.

The search function is actually fucked up right now - which is probably why you're not getting any results.

If you want something on the stiffer, more crudbusting end of the spectrum I'd look into
-Volkl xploders- burly, stiff, a classic. there's gunna be a revolt when volkl tries to change the dimensions on these
-Bromodels - untested but all the indicators are good
-Tankers - never skied 'em but they're supposed to be similar in burl to the xploder
-Legend Pros - very similar to the bromodel. see dude_le and phunks reviews on these along with my overly excessive comparisons between these, the xploders, and the bros.


If you want something floatier and softer, I'd look at:
-Sugar Daddys - a favorite. a versatile ski, good in most conditions. slightly twinned.
-Gotamas - floaty and s'posed to be in the sweet spot for flex for pow sticks. word is that combined with freerides they make an unbeatable BC pow setup. not so good on hardpack.
-B3s - rossi dampness. rossi durability. its a tradeoff.

The massive skis fall into their own category:
-Spatulas
-Fischer Big Stix 1.06
-Big Daddies
-Powder Plus
But since this isn't really where you're looking, I won't go here.

Jib-ier Sticks:
-Seth Pistols - these fall into a couple of categories but are sposed to be much improved for this year
-Scratch BCs -a little too damp and spongy, but I've had a reasonably good time on these
-Pocket Rockets - whatever the answer, the question is "Why they suck"
-Head Moships - I've heard good things about these but neither flexed nor skied them
-Armada ARVs - see the other thread within tech talk about these
-4Frnt MSPs- a burlier twin. haven't skied it, but somebody on the board helped build these.

it sounds like you'd be happy with the b3. they're stable as hell and are tortionally stiff, yet longitudinally (mostly tip) have some play. my buddy has the 185 and enjoys them, even though they are short. he usually skis long stixs in the mid to upper 190's. they are 94mm under foot (i think) and pretty good all around. there are plenty of skis that will fit your description, this is just one.

i don't know much about anything, and i haven't been on many of the different/newer models of stuff out there these days- but i can at least report my personal experience... last season, when i was able to get out and ride, it was my first opportunity to use a pair of nordica beast 92's that i picked up off ebay. the price was right, so i figured that i'd give them a try- even though i live in pittsburgh and ski at a vertically-challenged resort named seven springs. the shop where my roomate works at as a second job didn't have a jig to mount bindings on a ski as wide as 92mm, which i thought was kind of amusing. anyhow...

the beasts are a good time. they're a wooden core ski, so there's plenty of life to them- which is a good thing because i'm over six feet tall and my weight hovers somewhere north of 200 lbs, depending on how much drinking and/or jogging i've been doing. the pocket rockets are a similar ski, but they're a foam core and thus not as likely to stand up to abuse over the long haul. i think i'd break lesser skis than the beasts, especially when my dumb ass tries to copycat the little flippy-spinny kids with flexible skeletons out in the park.

honestly, the width didn't bother me too much at all- even on hard, icy conditions. some skiers, and especially industry folks, make such a huge deal out of minute differences in lengths, widths, etc as if these details make or break the entire riding experience. of course i recognize that each ski is different, but i think my attitude about the skis i'm riding with is just as important as anything else. the beasts make me feel more confident. they're a stable platform, and at speed despite being shorter than the 205 GS skis that i was riding back "in the day" they feel light and agile yet stragely solid.

although i'm frequently the only person i ever see with wider skis at my home resort, it doesn't bother me a bit. yes, the skis might take some technique adjustment- but it's not a conscious effort for me. you just do what comes naturally to make the skis function how they're supposed to function. i'm probably being too vague, all apologies. give the beasts a chance if you have the opportunity to demo them... they could be what you're looking for.

S W E E T!!! really user's friendly. My best pick for the first 5-7 days after a good release of snow. But I had the 03-04, and the 04-05 is prolly stiffer. Anyway, the general consensus is that gotama rule. Quite light, BTW, and a good pick also for AT

Since the search function wasn't working, I figured I might as well sum up what I believed was common opinion from previous reviews.

Well, I'll agree with those who have said the Bros can't be recommended until they've actually been skied (seldon doesn't count).

So until that time, I recommend anyone to go buy whatever ski they think might work best for them. When the Bros have been skied by the many who bought them, the reviews will be in. We ain't fightin for biz here by breaking our arms patting ourselves on the back, but we're doin our best to deliver the ski that will be appreciated in all conditions and rule in powder. We prefer to let others speak about our product to negate any obvious bias or bullshit.

edit: verbier 61 - Have you experienced any tip dive on your B3's in powder or deep wet snow?

Then he'll like the stiffer Bro Model flex. Just flexed the stiff version in a shop up against B3s and LPs. It flexed inbetween the two, virtually right in the middle of those two skis' flexes, but very similar in overall flex. We're still deciding on whether we should go any stiffer. It's actually harder making a soft ski that has some life to it. But like I said, we'll let those who ski it do the reviews.

OK splat. I'll buy both. I mean the stiff and the soft version :D

I bought the B2 to use them for AT in no-powder days. They work, but after trying B3 more extensively it became clear in my sick mind that B3 were much better not only in powder but in ANY other place. (BTW, you've B3, I guess..) So this summer I gladly sold them. Neadless to say, the decision about the stiff vs the soft flex is driving me nuts :rolleyes:
