Surfing is better than skiing.

The Captain of Team Dirty Aussie told me you spend more time lounging on the beach and chasing beach bunnies/jail bait than actually riding the waves.... supposedly your performance at Manly was less than. Something about "Too many pills..." ;)
i was only joking about putting it over here. too many inland haoles.
Barrels look fun, but nothing is better than floating and stomping a big stylie air. Nothing. Period.
Surfer chicks wear bikinis, skier chicks wear long underwear under a middle layer or two under an outer gore tex layer. In this respect, surfing is way better than skiing.
Here they wear a thick layer of chastity rubber, I'll take braids and a Giro.
I surfed once. In Hawaii. Upon returning to the frigid waters of the SF bay area, I tried surfing again. Once. In Pacifica. I wore my 3mm/2mm wetsuit fullbody wetsuit. And I got out shivering with blue lips and a mild case of hypothermia.
Surfing is cool.
You just can't be scrawny in ultra-cold water.
Also,
I suck at surfing. I admit this.
I try not to admit that I suck at skiing. However bad I am, I am a better skier than I am a surfer. .: Skiing is more fun for me.
I'll def. take 2 weeks of pow over 2 weeks of surfing.
i am a total hack at surfing. a good day involves standing on my board more than once and not getting completely spanked by the ocean. but i would have to agree with the point, surfing is better then skiing.
skiing is nowhere near as challenging as surfing, especially given all the variables that the ocean (not to mention locals on some beaches) throw at you. lifestyle? surfing blows skiing out of the water. you'd be hard pressed to find a surf town where the sausage party is even remotely as bad as it is in most ski towns. even if there as many guys, as LIP said, "surfer girls wear bikinis".
thats not to say that i will be hanging up my boards to become a full time surfer anytime in the future. but if push came to shove the only reason i would ever miss an entire ski season would be to go surfing.

Giro and braids...absolutely.
Edit: surfing is something i WILL do someday.
Apples & oranges.
Fuck apples, I'll stick with oranges.

Never surfed, probly never will. If it really is better than skiing, though, why would anyone in their right mind leave a place that has warm temps and bikini babes to go to a cold mountain where there are few chicks and they dress in layers? Hmmmmmmmm, MAYBE SKIING RULES! Hey, it's all gravity research:)

$100 bucks if 45% of this WHOLE board surfs. It is water, but faster. You know, not frozen, not freezing, not sloughing, CRASHING. (bye the way 100 everyone, for realz, open up)
This thought made me want to post. I have been on two planks for most of my life. Although the majority of my ski time has been in the Midwest, I have enjoyed one hearty season in the San Juans. I have been a maggot for three years now and I probably will be for the rest of my life. That being said, here´s my opinion.Quote:

I am living in Costa Rica now. I have spent the past three weeks learning to surf at Playa Tamarindo. I can say that after surfing from 5-10am, and 3-7pm yesterday, that I am VERY much hooked on the physics, the lifestyle, and the physical beauty I have experienced while learning to ride a surf board.
I consider myself a pretty good skier. I have dropped a few good sized cliffs into nipple high powder. I´ve been in the backcountry and spent days without seeing another human soul. And I´ve flipped and spun in the park. I hope to improve within all of these experiences when I move to Alta next season. I can say with confidence, that surfing is a much more difficult sport to pick up. It is hard for me to explain the sense of reward I felt standing up on a wave that was much bigger than me, but it is facking intense.
After nearly an entire day of surfing, I sat on my board and watched the sun drop into the Pacific last night. The euphoria that filled my body was something I have never felt before. I am not saying it was better than what one person feels on a powder day. I am just saying that every maggot on this board that shares the stoke of skiing could really broaden their perspective by picking up a surf board and giving it a try.
¡Mui Pura Vida!
Don't argue about it, just do what Punani and I do. Do them both, very frequently.
Soooo, you found a set of twins.......Quote:

Surfed once, loved it, hope to do it again. Hard to argue w/ the bikini logic, really.
I was absolutely amazed at the feeling of speed and acceleration that I got from the massive knee-high surf that I was able to ride. I can't even imagine what that big stuff must be like.
is something better/worse? not really
possible to choose a favorite? prolly
are these opinions relevant beyond personal preference? not really
I've surfed a bit. All this shit about bikinis and tans - last time I surfed the streams across the beach were frozen and there was a layer of ice about 1/2" below the surface of the sand. Really cool, surfing in Scotland...
The time before that was in Iquique, Chile. I got worked and knocked out by my board smashing me in the face, like a mean right hook. Luckily a buddy had an eye on me and hauled me out pretty quickly. Also really fun...
That said, I want to learn to surf properly. Skiing and surfing are like the ying and the yang - doing both would be like closing the circle of sliding sports on water, one in the cold the other in the hot (hopefully), balancing each other out. Yeah, I've been watching Groove (by far my fave ski movie ever) way too much. Aside from the spiritual bullshit surfing just looks really fun and I have had a great rush when I have actually managed to do it. Pity it has such a shallow learning curve...
So should I start growing my hair out for next season?Quote:

Babes in Bikini's that's a west coast thing. The few times I've gone surfing in the east and conditions were good has always been during a hurricane or Nor'easter. Not really hang out on the beach weather.
if you surfed as frequently as pu, you'd surf once every 3 months.;)Quote:

and i'm sorry we're "arguing" about it and making you all upset.
my pc at work doesn't always have my cookies enabled. i'm sorry i saw it, you're still annoying.Quote:

Yeah, I hate the weight of and the completely non-functional (when outside of the ski bindings) ski boots. I agree, surfing beats skiing.
surfing, esp in NorCal, is challanging, to say the least. I have picked it up and dropped it severasl times over the last 9 yrs here.....if i was living somewhere where the water temps were warmer and the waves a little smoother (SoCal), I think I would stick w/it more.......nothing like being a gaper to put things in perspective.....b/c thats what I am when I paddle out......a gaper.....i am athletic, played about every sport known to man at one point, am an avid MTB'er, road cyclist, ultimate frisbee player, mountainer and skier......but i can't seem to have that breakthrough ona surf board.....frustrating......
Sex is better than both of them.

I love to surf and ski but for me nothing is better than Whitewater kayaking. Kayaking combines the best aspects of both surfing and skiing ...... you can surf waves and run big waterfalls in a kayak. Plus you are in water (a constantly moving arena) and in the mountains. There is no greater experience than running a big waterfall or surfing huge standing waves in kayak surounded by the beauty of the mountains. Check out the gallery in this link for some video footage and pictures of some kayakers running some big waterfalls and surfing some huge waves. It is amazing what is being done in a kayak today.

I spent this past weekend surfing epic waves on the dries of the new river in West Virginia. I had some surfs that lasted nearly ten minutes. And I was doing huge cut backs, 360 spins, and cartwheels the entire time.
Nothing that I have done can compare to the fun that I have while kayaking. Everyone should try it out.

LMAO...tuffy, me thinks you're just doing it wrong.
Whatever I'm doing at the moment is what I like the best. Whether it be surfing a sweet 20 foot curl in Hawaii or skiing a 55 degree face in AK with 3 feet of AK creamy puff or scaling an 8000m peak in the Karakoram or flashing a V10 at Huecos, or redpointing a 5.14c at Rifle, or onsighting Zodiac in El Cap, whatever I'm doing at the moment is what I enjoy the best.:D
Amazed there are no pictures of the Reef Girls:

There.
Mmm... Reef girls.
Pro surfer's wives are the best you can get. Even hotter than pro golfer's wives.
This guys got it right. There are many things that I've gotten into the deep feeling that I get at the ideal times in skiing, most out in the wilderness on mountains, but also near shores. It's those moments that are really meaningful that matter, and it all depends on the person and what they are doing.Quote:

I wish there were a better way to describe the meta-physical feeling I'm talking about, right now the best i got is 'deep'
and I wouldn't mind getting a 'deep' feeling with one of those reef girls ;D
Reef girls, yummy.
I have to say though that Surfing a bigish (>6ft) wave and rippin a beautiful untouched pow face are the only two things better than sex. There I said it.
Nothing else gives the giggly, holyshitthatwassomuchfunIcoulddieandbeok feeling. Cycling, climbing, rivers, etc just don't have quite the same touch my soul I'm the happiest man alive feeling.
So this debate feeds a bit into the eternal where do Mr and Mrs. comish want to live? Co, Or, or SoCal. right now Socal is winning solely based on the surfing aspect, but come the winter and I start doin that Mammy drive every weekend and I will definitely be yearning for something closer. A debate for another time.
Surfing eh? Can you get drunk while doing it?
