Surfer chicks wear bikinis, skier chicks wear long underwear under a middle layer or two under an outer gore tex layer. In this respect, surfing is way better than skiing.

I surfed once. In Hawaii. Upon returning to the frigid waters of the SF bay area, I tried surfing again. Once. In Pacifica. I wore my 3mm/2mm wetsuit fullbody wetsuit. And I got out shivering with blue lips and a mild case of hypothermia.

Surfing is cool.

You just can't be scrawny in ultra-cold water.

I suck at surfing. I admit this.

I try not to admit that I suck at skiing. However bad I am, I am a better skier than I am a surfer. .: Skiing is more fun for me.

I'll def. take 2 weeks of pow over 2 weeks of surfing.

i am a total hack at surfing. a good day involves standing on my board more than once and not getting completely spanked by the ocean. but i would have to agree with the point, surfing is better then skiing.

skiing is nowhere near as challenging as surfing, especially given all the variables that the ocean (not to mention locals on some beaches) throw at you. lifestyle? surfing blows skiing out of the water. you'd be hard pressed to find a surf town where the sausage party is even remotely as bad as it is in most ski towns. even if there as many guys, as LIP said, "surfer girls wear bikinis".

thats not to say that i will be hanging up my boards to become a full time surfer anytime in the future. but if push came to shove the only reason i would ever miss an entire ski season would be to go surfing.

Never surfed, probly never will. If it really is better than skiing, though, why would anyone in their right mind leave a place that has warm temps and bikini babes to go to a cold mountain where there are few chicks and they dress in layers? This thought made me want to post. I have been on two planks for most of my life. Although the majority of my ski time has been in the Midwest, I have enjoyed one hearty season in the San Juans. I have been a maggot for three years now and I probably will be for the rest of my life. That being said, here´s my opinion.
I am living in Costa Rica now. I have spent the past three weeks learning to surf at Playa Tamarindo. I can say that after surfing from 5-10am, and 3-7pm yesterday, that I am VERY much hooked on the physics, the lifestyle, and the physical beauty I have experienced while learning to ride a surf board.
I consider myself a pretty good skier. I have dropped a few good sized cliffs into nipple high powder. I´ve been in the backcountry and spent days without seeing another human soul. And I´ve flipped and spun in the park. I hope to improve within all of these experiences when I move to Alta next season. I can say with confidence, that surfing is a much more difficult sport to pick up. It is hard for me to explain the sense of reward I felt standing up on a wave that was much bigger than me, but it is facking intense.
After nearly an entire day of surfing, I sat on my board and watched the sun drop into the Pacific last night. The euphoria that filled my body was something I have never felt before. I am not saying it was better than what one person feels on a powder day. I am just saying that every maggot on this board that shares the stoke of skiing could really broaden their perspective by picking up a surf board and giving it a try.

Surfed once, loved it, hope to do it again. Hard to argue w/ the bikini logic, really.

I was absolutely amazed at the feeling of speed and acceleration that I got from the massive knee-high surf that I was able to ride. I can't even imagine what that big stuff must be like.

I've surfed a bit. All this shit about bikinis and tans - last time I surfed the streams across the beach were frozen and there was a layer of ice about 1/2" below the surface of the sand. Really cool, surfing in Scotland...

The time before that was in Iquique, Chile. I got worked and knocked out by my board smashing me in the face, like a mean right hook. Luckily a buddy had an eye on me and hauled me out pretty quickly. Also really fun...

That said, I want to learn to surf properly. Skiing and surfing are like the ying and the yang - doing both would be like closing the circle of sliding sports on water, one in the cold the other in the hot (hopefully), balancing each other out. Yeah, I've been watching Groove (by far my fave ski movie ever) way too much. Aside from the spiritual bullshit surfing just looks really fun and I have had a great rush when I have actually managed to do it. Pity it has such a shallow learning curve...
