I have an actual garage now and we have a bunch of skis just leaning in the corner like some kind of heathens. I have built several of those dowel racks in the past for friends/clients. They get the job done, but somewhat inefficient on how much space they take up. Those gravity grabber deals are $40 bucks each. Something I haven't thought of using Ace/Home Depot found parts and basic hardware?

I used these metal hooks from Home Depot and 2, 2x4’s. I think it was under a $80 total because I already had screws.
I had family visit for a few weeks this season and the rack held 17 sets of skis.

Vertical with the button toe things works for everything but tech toes......may try horizontal with the lumber racks or some home depot hooks. My truck is too tall to fit in the garage so it's the GFs old scooby and lots of room for toys. My OCD is kicking in and the skis need to go somewhere. I may try some ceiling hanging line Bandini and use wall space for bikes.

Horizontal rack is nifty, way more efficient than vertical along the wall. Horizontal on ceiling seems like the way to go to maximize storage in a garage type space and just as easy to build.
I have mine vertical on a rolling cart; its not the most space efficient but I like the utility. I can keep at the front of the garage for quick loading and unload in the winter and spring and in the summer i just move to a dark corner or roll the whole thing over to the shed.

Other than hanging them from the rafters, how does horizontal storage save any room over a dowel rack?

oh shit something vertical with wheels is exactly what i've been trying to throw together for our apartment closet - it is an awkwardly long but narrow space that fits lots of skis in a single file row but then is impossible to access the ones in the back. Is yours just a plywood base and then square dowels?? might try to put something together this summerQuote:

Found this thing at the dump in the free pile, it was a guitar stand with short legs for 4 guitars, took the legs off and screwed it to the wall. Works great for the rockered skis as they hang from the toe of the bindingsAttachment 457084Attachment 457086
