Alternative to the old wooden dowel ski rack?

I have an actual garage now and we have a bunch of skis just leaning in the corner like some kind of heathens. I have built several of those dowel racks in the past for friends/clients. They get the job done, but somewhat inefficient on how much space they take up. Those gravity grabber deals are $40 bucks each. Something I haven't thought of using Ace/Home Depot found parts and basic hardware?

I did something like the above with ladder hanger hooks for years.
Then I saw these-

Not a bad price, but I are a cheap bastard so I made my own out of plywood using a boot toe as a template..

I used these metal hooks from Home Depot and 2, 2x4’s. I think it was under a $80 total because I already had screws.
I had family visit for a few weeks this season and the rack held 17 sets of skis.

If yer really pressed for space or just have way too many skis you can put that horizontal rack over a window

Vertical with the button toe things works for everything but tech toes......may try horizontal with the lumber racks or some home depot hooks. My truck is too tall to fit in the garage so it's the GFs old scooby and lots of room for toys. My OCD is kicking in and the skis need to go somewhere. I may try some ceiling hanging line Bandini and use wall space for bikes.

I had a space in the back corner of the garage so built the Hutz family ski center. It’s good enough for a small section of the family birthright. The flat rack was built with spare parts but seems to work ok.

Horizontal rack is nifty, way more efficient than vertical along the wall. Horizontal on ceiling seems like the way to go to maximize storage in a garage type space and just as easy to build.

I have mine vertical on a rolling cart; its not the most space efficient but I like the utility. I can keep at the front of the garage for quick loading and unload in the winter and spring and in the summer i just move to a dark corner or roll the whole thing over to the shed.

Good point. In my garage I have a version of the lumber rack so each individual rack holds two or three pairs of skis (and poles). So that may be a way it’s better.
The bottom rack is at a good height so I use it as a quick bike stand by hanging the saddle off of one of the hooks.
In a past small garage I hung a couple 2X4’s from a ceiling (like Lhutz and bandini), above the car and piled them up there.

oh shit something vertical with wheels is exactly what i've been trying to throw together for our apartment closet - it is an awkwardly long but narrow space that fits lots of skis in a single file row but then is impossible to access the ones in the back. Is yours just a plywood base and then square dowels?? might try to put something together this summer

YMMV, but for us the depth & strength of the lumber rack has been great to organize lot of different types of skis very densely while maintaining easy access to any given pair. Ski storage game changed with fat/rockered skis in particular, but the lumber rack don't care.

For example, the bottom slot of ours has 4 x nordic skis, and the top slot has 1 pair of Bodacious + 1 pair of Protests. That's 6 long pairs of skis that would otherwise be lined up on the wall vertically, none of them playing very well with dowels (camber/weak tips of the nordic skis, weight/big rocker of Bodacious & Protests). Then, there are 4 more shelves in between those -> I think we have 15-17 pairs on the rack at any given time. So, I'd either have to add 10+ more dowel spots, or just fill in the horiz. rack.

Location flexibility is also good -> above a window or on any wall works. I've got ours mounted ~4' up to the front of some built in deep shelves that house a generator & grill on the bottom -> these can still be wheeled in/out from under the rack without moving a bunch of skis.

Found this thing at the dump in the free pile, it was a guitar stand with short legs for 4 guitars, took the legs off and screwed it to the wall. Works great for the rockered skis as they hang from the toe of the bindings
