We put the washer and drier at the end of the counter against the wall, and bumped the counter up the 2" at that spot. It's no big deal since it's the laundry/mud room, nobody ever even noticed, and it looks fine if done right.

A lot of older models suffered from musty smells if you didn't keep them clean enough. I think a lot of the newer models now have a cleanout door, that allows you to drain the shitty water and clean the trap that is under the washer. Boosting the washer up 2 inches give more space for this.
I've also noticed that the drums in many of the new front load washers aren't perfectly horizontal but are actually tipped back a bit. That would also require a bit more height.

That reminds me, I need to drain mine and run some cleaning cycles. Been a while, getting a little musty. Annoying.

You know what's annoying? One if the kids is slaying my favorite bathroom at this very moment and I am forced to use an inferior throne. That's annoying.

I've got the same problem with my kitchen cabinets. There's an opening clearly intended for a microwave, but there seems to be exactly one microwave on the market that fits the opening (due to the depth), and of course it's about twice the price of any comparable microwave.
