This should go over rather well with all the locals. And by "rather well," I mean it will probably cause riots and draw the ire of paying locals.

Dunno what they mean by "1/3rd of tram capacity. Does that mean they're gonna let 5 people per cabin go up with this system? However, I don't see why the locals will get mad. They'll be free and available first come first serve at the ticket windows with a season pass or day ticket...so the minnesotans who roll out of bed around 10am after a night of drinking at Whiskey Jack's probably will not get them and the people who wait an hour for swifty and the triple likely will get them when they show up at the resort at 8am. I'm just surprised they're not charging for this.
I got that e-mail as well and disregarded as their normal SPAM. I can see how this would piss off the locals, but not me. If there is a long line at the tram I pass. BS has lots of places that are less crowded, and the brobrah vibe in the line is something I can do without. See ya next week.
This. The other thing that honestly has to be considered is that it's not the locals who make the money for Big Sky. It's the people who come from out of town with their out of town money and spend it at the hotels and on day tickets. And this serves them ok.
But what? Really? WTF.

You know honestly, except for some minor departmental details, I really like the job. Pays well, I get to ski for free, and I get free world class coaching all the time. Plus, I get to introduce myself as thumper, and talk about how to have a good time, instead of a bad time.
If you french fry when you wanna pizza, you're gonna have a bad time.
yay bridget!!!!!!!!!!
That fast-pass thing is fucked up! They already put two patrollers or schoolers on most every tram car when it is crowded, so the capacity is down to 13.
Yeah dude sorry about needing to get patrollers to the summit. It's a real bummer.
That said, 8-10" of blower up here right now and the wind drifted it deeper. Faceshots on Snakepit and Colters this am. Great day so far.

no fun being sick on a pow day.
for those who did go (or are probably still there), how'd the fast pass system work out?
From what I heard it worked out pretty well...no real uproar in the tram line and everyone was pretty happy about it. Even the stodgy local complaining about the program while he used it to walk onto the tram...
It was deep today and started dumping again around 3. Still dumping hard now.
Walked right up and got one at 8:30 without even waiting in line. Cut the line at 12:30. Whatever, not a huge fan of the idea, but I'm not gonna sit there and be cut by gapers when I can do it too. The line was surprisingly short today (4-5 cars) for big snow on a crowded Saturday. Don't really attribute it to the fast pass though. I will say I did go make challenger laps for about an hour mid-day instead of waiting in the tram line because I knew I could cut later. So who's to say others weren't thinking the same way. When I cut I was the only one cutting on the tram I was on, but when I came back around there were about 5-6 fast passers on my car. Still kinda up in the air on the whole thing. I would be pissed if I was an employee though. Talked to a guy in marketing that says they plan to keep it free. So hopefully this whole idea is motivated by efficiency and not charging for it in the future. I think the first really crowded blue bird pow day will be the true test of its efficiency.
Had a great day skiing with my son at Big Sky today.

About this fast pass deal. It would help you out if you wanted to ski the Big C right? Is it true you need to take your run at a certain time slot? I have not done it yet but hoping to this spring. It looks like fun. BTW Climber Joe, thanks again for the EHPs buddy. They are happy on my very happy feet! Attachment 111645
Nice! the A-Z chutes are skiing great finally! I got one really good run in there this season, now I am getting ankle surgery! Glad to see your enjoying the skis, and yeah, you have to go up to the top shack and sign out with patrol to get a time slot for the big. Its a bum rush for first tram car usually.
That's one of the many benefits that I've heard people touting about the pass. Sign up for a Big slot that corresponds to your fast pass and get up there right on time. The dude who was skiing around Saturday with a carboard sign on his pack that said "Fuck you fast pass and fuck all you gapers" appeared to have calmed down a little on Sunday. Beautiful bluebird day yesterday and it got warm in the afternoon. Went from winter pow leftovers in the morning to spring snow in the afternoon in places.
Hey Bunion, how is Moonlight weathering the heat wave? I might ski down there tommorow. Was wondering if Lone Tree got crusty and which Headwaters are skiing good?
tone, idk about conditions, but would be down for some afternoon laps
We'll see how far into the afternoon my gimp ass makes it. I look just like my avatar, give a shout if you see me up there. I'll be skiing with my dad, but he does pretty well. Probly take some Lone Tree laps and hopefully some headwaters depending on how tommorow's weather pans out.
Tony.
Still soft and wintery on the dark side. Looks like a pretty vigorous system tomorrow, should be snowy & windy.
well, yeah, you could get a FP and then a big slot, but then you would have to wait in line to get your fast pass, then hustle to the Swifty line that people are already in, then get on the tram at just the right time to have your big slot line up with your fast pass: patrol won't let you pick your time, you sign up for the next available slot. So, yes, you can use the fast pass for a big slot, but it's just gonna be a hassle.
I don't get it. If the line is too long, how will letting people cut that line (which you have to get a pass for, requiring you to wait in a newly created line to get) make the line move faster? And if the fast pass is to get vacationing guests to use the tram, then why do season pass holders get to use it too? Aren't they now taking away spots for visiting guests that this program was designed to create?
I don't think this program solves anything. My two cents.
Big sky and making sense are two things that do not go together.......
As for the fast pass, it is simply Boyne's way of breaking the locs into the fact that the tram will be a partial pay to play scenario. It starts here, then by next year $ gets you up the thing quicker. It is like the frog in the pot of boiling water plan. Before the locs know what happened they are watching half the beer can filled with Bogner wearing Liberty Bowl shredding potential real estate buyers being wisked to that wonderful view. The "guide" program in JH fills a third of every tram with people who are not paying for a guide as much as they are paying for line cutting privaleges. similair at the bird. Oh well, at least the headwaters are good; every third or fourth year, the last two weeks of the season. Does anyone really care? That mtn sucks and is the best thing to ever happen to orthopedic surgeons in Bozeman.
John Cunt, mad props to you as the best troll on TGR.
CJ, bummer about ankle surjery. Btw that a-z was from last year. It cant be that good yet can it? Just so I can get this clear, do you need to sign up for a big slot on the same day or can you reserve one for the next day? I know this would only help if you will be there on consecutive days. I only get to go for free week anyway, otherwise cant afford the place. So sign up for big one day, then corresponding fast pass the next seems like it would work right?
If I'm guesstimating correctly here and if the webcams that I've been refreshing like a recovering addict on methadone show me, Big Sky should be the business tomorrow. Anyone want to meet for a few laps?
Hard to say.... It snowed pretty hard all day with falling temps. and N. winds. That being said, the new snow didn't bond real well with the old surface of slush piles and chicken heads from Sun. & Mon. On slope angles steeper than about 35 deg. everything sluffed right off. The sluff piles were really tasty though.
A-Zs were scratchy underneath and reports from the S. Face were dust on crust. Still, tomorrow is forecast to be brilliantly sunny and cold with a gradual warming trend. Looks to be sunny through at least Sat.
Tomorrow is my Friday and I plan to hit some favs. like an A-Z on the way to a lap off the N. Summit before I have to slave away at the weekly staff meeting.
Make no mistake, the skiing will be good, but I think the less traveled and lower mountain N. facing terrain will be where the money is. Shady Chute, Peru/Bolivia, Lone Moose etc.
And of course the Headwaters.
FYI for all you Big Sky only ticket holders, we are taking a much harder line with people who ski the Headwaters beyond Cold Spring w/o a Moonlight pass. If we see you, expect to be escorted to the ticket office and you will buy a pass for the day.
The alternative is either losing your pass at the other resort or talking to the Sheriff.
We spend a lot of money on opening and maintaining that terrain and if you want to ski it, we are psyched.
But you gotta pay for the pleasure.:fm:
These are some real live mountain outlaws getting after it this week at Bridger!

Hey Bunion
Why don't you turn your head the other way and let the kiddies ski? Did you get into ski patroling to be a cop? If so there are plenty of ski areas in Colorado that would love to have you.
Hey hofman, I work for a company that is struggling to stay in business.
That means we need to be paid for the services we provide.
Did you become a skier to steal?
Thanks for the tip, Bunion. I've never thought about skiing the snowfield without the ticket; doesn't seem right.
As for yesterday, your summation was about dead on. The NW winds shut down the triple and I never go on the tram, unfortunately. But, the windloading refilled Challenger quite nicely all day. Dakota was highly variable with dust on crust in some locations. Never really skied much else as it was too good.
Shraddacord, thanks for the pr0n. The Bridger peeps are pretty self important with their own thread, so be sure to share that photo stoke with them too. :fmicon:
I watched the tram line yesterday. The Fast Pass thing is slowing down the tram line quite a bit. I'm not sure about the numbers, but, if they let 5 people up every 15 minutes or so, then every 15 minutes, all day long, 5 people are happy and about 100 people are pissed. This doesn't even take into account ski school and every volunteer ski patroller that wants to take a break from Andesite. ( If employees can't use the Fast pass, then patrollers who are not stationed on the peak should also be kept out ). Why fuck with the tram line? For many years now it has taken care of itself. If there is a problem, why is it so popular?
free bs day pass. best joke takes it.
Federal Judge Dick Cebull,shit.....is a joke,a bad one.
John C was taking a leak....
The joke was.... in his hand.............
