Praise Ullr indeed. We must have done something right as another 12-14" blesses the hills of NNM. Storm came in right side up and stuck to existing base quite well.
Yesterday was a country club day as we took our pick of fresh (and refreshed) lines down Reforma - West Blitz Trees and Highline Ridge.

a lot of the direct side country is Indian Tribal land> seriously Do Not Trespass!
I loved the steeps there..though I would not want to charge there on weak snowpack..its really steep mountain in spots..there's a self arrest dummy usually below one the lifts you ride..to give skiers the idea of how steep some runs are.
The scene is tiny..usually you can mingle w peoples of all types>if you check your judgement at the state line!
Some Hardcore motherfuckers out there / Cops are stationed at the Bars in New Mexico (at least up north there) during the closing time , it has been so out of hand in past years.
hey all, hope your season is turning around well! i have a question. i've always thought about spending a season in taos, never been, seems like a cool place. how would it be doing the van thing? mine is a white stealth work truck, would i be able to chill and be not hassled around the area?
thanks in advance!
Yes. A few friends have been van living up there for years. The corp has tried to enforce new "guidelines" for the parking lot but they can't do shit; it's National Forest. If you make good with Village of Taos Ski Valley police (all 3 of them), you're golden.
I'd be inclined to park low (Arroyo Seco or Valdez) and take the shuttle up daily.
Trying to decide if I should book a trip for end of March. Even though things are looking up, still kinda dicey to look too far ahead. Have there been any years where highline ridge wasn't mostly open end of March? Place shuts down April 1 I think.
How is it there right now? Doesn't seem like much is open?
Yep, not gonna work, family trip to ABQ is the first week of April.
Is there anything there worth bringing some GS skis for a day of groomer riding? Also, any locals want to drink tequila and smoke some weed?
As for that hike now needed to reach Taos’ out-of-this-world out-of-bounds skiing, Blake says of plans to one day erect a lift to service it, "I'll leave that to future generations. I'm very happy with my area as it is now. It's a dream come true, much more really than I ever expected. That lift is in the master plan, but in a way it would be a shame to build it. Most Americans don't get enough exercise anyway."

“...be a shame to build it” Never should have built that lift!
Lifts spin tomorrow.
Good for them. Fingers crossed it's finally a good year down there.
We may be passing through, is there dispersed camping off of 150? Some place for a small trailer on the national forest (besides up at the village)?
There are a couple-three USFS campgrounds on the way up from town, but they’re usually locked up starting about now. 150 runs through a pretty narrow steep-sided canyon, so there aren’t a lot of roads off of it. They usually allow self-contained camping up at TSV in one of the parking lots, but I’m not positive about that since the new ownership. I live not too far away, so I don’t do too much dispersed-style camping near there, but I think a good bet for nearby might be on BLM land out on the mesa.
If you don’t get a good answer here, I run a local bc skiing forum that gets good ol’ local dirtbag traffic and I bet you’d get a good answer there in the community section. You’d have to sign up for an account, but I’ll make it happen quickly.

Anyone have beta on the bc up by TSV? Heading to Taos for a long weekend this weekend and wanted to know how the coverage is going up the Williams lake trail. With wife and pup, so looking for a mellow tour basically equivalent to a Nordic ski.
And/or opinions on Sipapu? Have free days there with the Loveland pass, just not sure if it'll be a zoo with the holiday and only some of the area open.

Maybe they'll get terrain open now :p
Glad to see the snowpack down there is like mid february from last year if not more already.
This was one of the better storms here in the last few years. Still, need just a little better base to keep you off the rocks.
Base in New Mexico, what?
Me, yesterday, at Santa Fe, before opening:

Looking good, B. I skied just outside the resort a couple hours after it closed and hit a couple rocks. (And yes, I'm doing it wrong.)
Heading to Taos next week and trying to figure out what skis to bring. What are conditions like, hard and fast or still soft snow? Its supposed to be quite chilly.
Looks like a bad slide at TSV just happened:

An avalanche has buried an unknown number of people near Kachina Peak, the highest point at Taos Ski Valley ski resort.
According to a press release from the resort, an "inbounds avalanche" took place in a chute off Kachina Peak just before noon on Thursday (Jan. 17), burying multiple people.
Members of Taos Ski Valley Ski Patrol and other first responders searching the snow had extracted two skiers just before 1 p.m. and performed CPR on them.
According to Chris Stagg, vice president of public affairs for the ski valley, the skiers – both male – were still alive and had been taken down the mountain to the resort's Mogul Medical Clinic.
Other rescuers are continuing to search for anyone else who may have been buried using avalanche probes, shovels and the help of rescue dogs, Stagg said.
According to Taos News photographer Morgan Timms, who was at the scene of the accident, the snow from the avalanche is so deep that the probes, which are as long as 30 feet, would not reach the bottom of the snowpack.
Medics with Taos County Emergency Services and firefighters with Taos Volunteer Fire Department are on standby at the base of the resort as the search continues.
The Kachina Peak Ski Valley lift, which provides easy access to expert terrain at the top of the mountain, opened on Jan. 15. It was built in 2015, providing access to sections of the mountain which were previously only accessible on foot.
Stagg said members of the mountain's ski patrol team had detonated explosives in the area of Kachina Peak early Thursday morning in an effort to reduce the risk of avalanche.
While the rescue operation continues into Thursday afternoon, the Kachina Peak lift has been closed and lift four has been closed temporarily. Other lifts are still operating. Lift four was closed temporarily.
This is a developing story.
