A man who police say jumped from a cab in Wilmette without paying the fare left a bag in the backseat that included two problematic items: A bong and an ID.
Wilmette police used the ID to contact the man’s father, who sent his son to the Police Department, 710 Ridge Road, where he was ticketed.
Christopher Porter, 19, of Evanston, was cited with possession of marijuana at 11:15 p.m. Aug. 4. He offered the cab driver $20 to cover the $15 fare police say he owed, plus a $5 tip. The cab driver accepted the money and declined to press theft charges.
Porter and a friend got into the man’s taxi at 2:30 a.m. Aug. 4 in Winnetka, according to a police report. Both were drinking beer, the cab driver told police. The other man was dropped off at Third Street and Linden Avenue, with the understanding that Porter would pay the entire fare.
At 3:38 a.m. Aug. 4, in the 400 block of Poplar Drive, Porter opened the door and ran away, leaving his backpack, which the driver promptly turned over to Wilmette Police, according to the police report.
It included:
* A marijuana smoking device
* A timecard with the man’s name on it
* A t-shirt
* A can of V8
* A bottle of water
* An opened tin of mint chewing tobacco
* A blue lighter
* Keys
* 8 cents in change
Porter is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 23. He could not be reached for comment.
How can a taxi driver have a fare for one hour that came to $15. Something fishy there.
