the guns aren’t like my car that won’t go forever without servicing. they’re pretty much good to go. they can also easily be passed person to person, there are no records of possession. someone dies, they get lost, they’re not stored right… the gun doesn’t disappear, it’s just off the grid. so we have more and more of them because people like being pedaled lies about how safe we are with them despite all evidence to the contrary. plus any asshole
can walk into a store and get one to kill a bunch of randoms. and the same morons that insisted the problem was intractable before keep doubling down to make it worse. we already know what works because every other country and a handful

Ok, but guns were hard to find during those periods because they were selling at record numbers, and there were still relatively few mass shootings. They were statistical anomalies, horrifying but rarer than lightning strikes or most any other danger one could face from the natural world. That has changed massively in the last year. They weren't common at any point before that despite the popularity of guns and semi autos especially rising over the past couple decades.

RE the above graph, its risen roughly in line with population. Just googled US population in 1899. 70million. Roughly 60mil guns and legal unregulated military surplus machine guns short shotguns and rifles etc, the ownership of which would only rise after each world war. Now theres 300mil+ guns and 330mil people.

I think focusing on helping such areas should be more palatable to the right wing than giving up their own rights, but its hard when both sides view everything as a slippery slope to something else. I agree, even if its not so simple as not being able to afford playstations disenfranchisement and no reason to live are affects of poverty as well.

From a utilitarian perspective it seems like it'd help the country to not have huge economic disparity and a higher population of its people in prison than any other developed nation, the combination of the two being especially insidious when the population in prison is the poor, and also descendants of former slaves.

Yet most of the mass shooters at schools are white. And despite the horrific nature of their crimes, they were a statistic anomaly up until basically the last year. Some of thats lockdowns etc but I think theres more at play. I think a lot of black people got mad because they felt like the system didn't care about them and that was exposed more clearly during the pandemic, angry alienated mentally ill whites could feel the same way but not have means to protest and no community identity to latch onto to protest about, which is part of their problem.

i canoe you’d stop by. weren’t the parents of those ten year olds the ones that were punished for our dumb laws? why should an 18 year old kid be able to buy a firearm when they can’t even drink? how are waiting periods and background checks punishing when it doesn’t impede your ability to play with the toys you have right now?

Great question, Ken.

We have a volunteer army, so although we register for selective service the draft has not been implemented in decades. So there really is no "has to" and we are also not in a war. But it's also pretty evident with what is going on on our own soil, that changes are necessary to guarantee the safety and right to pursue happiness domestically, and young people with unfettered access to firearms impedes that.

Lastly, although people think guns are toys, they're tools that are used to kill people and animals quickly and efficiently and since we know longer live in a vast wilderness under threat by a foreign power or having to maintain power by evil means over an enslaved group, we should catch the laws up to reality.

I would like to apologize for the rules of time, shit goes one way and things change and it us up to us yo use our brains to adapt to new facts and realities and make the best of it.
