According to Dr. Fauci--head of the Nat'l Inst of Allergy and Infectious Disease, which is the branch of the NIH that funds vaccine research, influenza is now the number one priority. Seems appropriate, according to the CDC the influenza death toll ranges from 3,300 to 49,000 per year. AIDS kills about 6000/year, although it also causes life long morbidity and the need for very expensive meds. What the change in priority will mean in actual funding remains to be seen.

For those who didn't understand what mofro said--the part of the flu virus that provokes a strong immune respons changes, so you can't make a universal vaccine effective against that part of the virus. There is a part of the virus that doesn't change, but it also doesn't provoke a strong immune response. The challenge is to make that part of the virus provoke a stronger response in the human. This has been accomplished in lab animals but not tried on humans yet.

I didn’t get a flu shot basically bc of laziness so it’s my own fault.
andrew got a shot tho so we’re somewhat interested to see if it works for him or if he comes down with it too.

at the drug store a few days ago and there was a VERY sick woman picking some up for herself. i used my clothes that evening as kindling in my stove.

I am sure that there are people here who can speak more technically about it, but from my understanding, if she was already that sick, it will be of limited use for her. The key is to start taking at as soon as possible once you start to feel the onset of symptoms, which is why I make a point of always having it on hand, in the house, at the start of every flu season.

I have relations who can can prescribe it, so I never have any issue getting it prior to being sick. I imagine it shouldn't be too hard to track down.

I;ll take surly or sulky if I can't get sultry. It's all good, man.
