I just moved to Tahoe in February. I've heard people talk about "fire road", but not sure where it is, guessing it's near stagecoach lodge?
Is there anything ride able around Heavenly? My split and myself are jonesing for some turns. Checked out Boreal today, but just not worth the $$ for what was available.

It's a gated fire road so you have to either hike it or ride your bike up it. If hiking just go up right under the lift you will hit the road you will see it starting to wind up hill to your right. On bike you can head up a road that goes uphill past eagles nest, goes past some gates and new big homes and gets you to the same spot under the lifts. Your looking at going all the way up to the mid mountain lodge to get to the photo above though.
November 11 and the Tahoe thread is 2/3 of the way down Page 2. Something is wrong with that picture. I shall not talk about Mammoth turns Saturday with various mags and friends. Someone will remind me it's not in Tahoe.
Vets and I killed it at Boreal today. Lap after lap of Castle Peak goodness. Things apparently were much less crowded than the weekend. The temp reached 60° by noon thirty. If you got off the lift and pushed, then straight lined, you still ended up pushing to get up the hill back to the chair at the end.
Sick of this sixties in Tahoe shit....
CO and PNW get pounded, even the EC gets some, but we have to wait our turn. C'est La Vie
if i hadn't taken up climbing last year i would likely be bouncing off the walls now. well, i guess technically i am bouncing off the walls anyway.

I don't get it. How does tuning your skis help? That is kind of like getting ready. I'm doing my part by continuing to take down trees and excavating my slope. If we get big rains before I get a retaking wall foundation in, I'm kind of fucked. My skis are sitting in the garage, in mounted. That is how I'm doing my part. My car never gets washed, so I can't help there.

Meh. The calendar year, to date, is the driest on record... so that'd be pretty damn hard to top. I know it seems like we're jinxed with good teleconnections in place and the storms still going north, but it's a long season. It's statistically incredibly unlikely to be worse than 2013, or even 2012.
In the meantime, I'm making the best of Indian summer...

A storm on Wednesday/Thursday would sure be nice to add to the manmade snow. The base of Tamarack lift is 9,100' and that makes it about 10 degrees colder than the lake/Heavenly Village elevation, when there is no inversion.
The opening on Friday Nov 22 should be good for getting the legs in shape.
Some models are calling for 3 different systems this week. If the 3rd one hits, we could go over a foot this week.

As long as it stays cold enough looks like tomorrow will drop a little snow. Even Lassen and Shasta is suppose to get some.
Tahoe Mountain Sports begins avalanche series
Tahoe Mountain Sports in Kings Beach will kick off a free, three-part avalanche education series this Wednesday with a refresher discussion on the basics of avalanche beacon use.
“As the first of a three-part Avalanche Education Series, join your fellow Tahoe backcountry enthusiasts for a community-oriented fun night at Tahoe Mountain Sports on November 20 and learn the basics of beacon use, or just brush up on your avalanche expertise and transceiver techniques,” according to a press release from the shop. “Experienced mountain guide and Level 3 AIARE instructor Tom Carter, and Ortovox Rep Jared Rodriguez, will be present to lead a discussion about the basics of companion rescue gear and techniques. Tom will also lead a hands-on lesson on how to properly and efficiently use your avalanche transceiver. Bring your own avalanche gear to practice with, demo some of the newest Ortovox models or just come with an appetite to learn, and you won’t be disappointed.”
Attendees should bring headlamps and dress appropriately for outdoor hands-on practice.
The series continues Dec. 20 with an avalanche airbag party sponsored by ABS and featuring pro skier Elyse Saugstad. The final part of the series takes place Feb. 5 with instruction on how to analyze avalanche reports with the Sierra Avalanche Center.

The lady and I are looking to find a reasonably priced room for rent in the Tahoe City/Truckee area for this winter (From January 1st-April/May). We both got the Squalpine pass. If anyone has a lead on something shoot me a PM. I've looked on craigslist but figured I would give here a shot too... We both have steady jobs that allow us to work from home (reliable internet required) and figure it's time to live in Tahoe for a winter.
