I love the guy in the video trying to convince himself that they are ok. "just be cool.....(deep swallow)....we're uphill(with much trepidation)."

This still blows my mind. Having spent all my serious ski life in BC, I just can't imagine why they don't spend more time on controlling the resorts. Is it like FREEDOM thing? How many deaths does it take to rethink avalanche control?
Im not overly invested in this argument in any way, but its clearly an ongoing problem that only seems to be getting worse, and has a clear, simple solution.
Europe’s philosophy:
Mountains are not necessarily Disney world… or better said: grumed slopes are, the rest is up to you.

Where?
Looks like a tram or similar tower far lookers left. Woof, that is frightening.
Thing that always scared me in Yurp is there is still pow fever, obviously depending on the resort and lift, but that can lead to tons of people above or to your side doing different things than you would do...
Jackson OB has definitely become that, I won't disagree. It wasn't like that when I was there, but that was pre opened boundaries, so yeah, a while ago... Mammoth, nope. It's definitely different in NoAm. because of the extent of control. I'm not advocating for Yurp to change. I love the freedom, but on a big 1st blue bird day after a storm, it definitely gives me more pause, where as I would spend at least that day in bounds at the Village. I used to spend a few days in JH letting things settle.
I disagree.
Point is that it's like that here in NAm now; little difference from Yurp "in bounds". Comparing Mammoth cornice to the Couloir Cosmiques isn't really like fruits.
Either by stupidity or intent, people independent of locale do incredibly stupid shit. Any rope drop at any NAm ski area lets loose the yahoos who ski down on each other in sketchy conditions. Happens here in the PNW any powder day. Road To Provo rope drop? Telluride Gold Hills chutes opening?. Name any challenging terrain in NAm and there's a ton of inconsiderate and threatening behavior. I got blown off a heavily used traverse at Crustal last year by dingalings who set off a slide from the top of the Throne bowl and did not say shit.
Ahh, this I don't disagree. And then Mammoth leads the pack in the knucklehead factor.
I think JH,Alta/Bird OB or anywhere OB is comparable to Yurp, but not in-bounds No. Am.
For me the difference is 97% of the time when the rope drops in NoAm. it's been bombed to shit and then ski cut etc, so a significantly reduced chance of sliding. The chances of them kicking off a slide onto me is definitely lower after all the bombing than in Yurp where its basically impossible to bomb everything as mentioned above so if going off the groomer you have to consider it as OB in NoAM and therefore not been bombed/ski cut. That is a different calculus, at least for me. Yes, post control slides happen in NoAm. and I ski w/ a beacon in bounds on big pow days, but the level of bombing does give me a higher level of confidence the whole slope isn't going to slide ala the above video. Seen that plenty of times in Yurp so you do have to pay way more attention to everything there than when dropping Road to Provo post control.
Cosmiques would be like a supasized Granite or Central on top of Granite if we are trying to find comparables. Both easily accessible, awesome in their own ways, not controlled and you should have a clue.
Again, it seems like you're comparing oob to in bounds. I'm pretty sure what slid above is oob.
Point being, it's easier to go oob in Yurp but the pistes seem to be just as well controlled as in NAm.
I still disagree: NAm has just as many idiots as Yurp if not more when it comes to inappropriate and unsafe conduct in sketchier terrain.
Nobody told me there'd be any Calculus involved...
Headed to Chamonix for my first Alps ski experience, expecting to step off the Aiguille du Midi for my first time on Sunday. Avalanche in the previous posts looks nasty but glad to fresh
snow!
Highway to Heaven - sadly ironic. A relatively easy to access variant of Stairway to Heaven which comes in higher and is accessed from Col des Gentianes. It had already avalanches higher up with a victim a couple of days back.
That’s Mont Gelé in the background

175cm in the last 7 days with wind. Look at all the layers. Possibly that specific line/trigger point hasn’t been skied this season as only now the rocks are covered. But it propagated very wide. Pretty much the whole face went right down to the Mont Gele grand journée exit where the video was taken from. It seems the guy who triggered it was found (deceased) with avi pack engaged under 2m of snow. They don’t know if there are others (without Transceivers) under there…

Reachable by lift/ little hike. But no control work. So outside. They only secure groomed stuff and official "freeride routes".
Still despite the traffic increase Avie death numbers do not increase. They still hover at about 18-20 per year( in Switzerland), which is not that much considering millions of backcountry uses and the absurdly reckless behaviour sometimes. I mean I keep pushing munter's reduction metjod most of the time, but what people do these days is pretty wild.
So it has become safer, statistically.
Edit: 28 year old dutch a few days ago and a 58 year old Russian yesterday died in that area.
This is accurate from what I saw in Verbier yesterday

Better picture here of trigger point in the steep, rocky outcrop that then propagated lookers left to the standard Highway descent
https://amp.rts.ch/info/regions/vala...de-nendaz.html
I think they could have 100% triggered from there. On an avi level 4 day anywhere in the vacinty it can be triggered.
How deep was the weak layer?
If the figures quoted to how much snow has fallen, Is the PWL not deep enough in the snow pack to only be effected in certain points ie over ridges etc?
Sent from my SM-G780G using TGR Forums mobile app
It was not remote triggered. There is a track straight into the trigger point. The avi report (above) explains that the trigger points are shallower weak layers that then propagate to much deeper layers.

Another example here. Shallow at the trigger point but much deeper out to the lookers left
