The pro patroller at Squaw who dropped his pole loading Granite a few weeks ago was very nice when I gave him his pole back. I have found that asking patrollers advice about terrain/snow conditions is usually a waste of time. I think the philosophy is --if you have to ask you shouldn't go there, which is a good philosophy, so I stopped asking.Quote:

For us here in Oregon at least where I work we do not get OT until after you've worked 54hrs in a week. It has to do with being on federal land - average 54hrs a week out over a entire year and it ends up being a 40hr work week. We're considered agricultural workers. I know it's a lot different in states with some sort of mining but we do not need a blasting lisence. Shit fucking sucks, a good handful of my coworkers worked with him in the summers and are a total wreck.

Hah! saw yer tracks up there I think. U guys ski far skiers right down ridge off ridge summit nipple? Yesterday we skied lookers right line down ridge from summit and today we hit lookers left side of center Y line.
I've always thought centerville peak was the stand alone peak between jobs and porcupine. The one directly above the people in the last pic.

While the logistics of operations are tremendously complex, one thing is simple. If terrain can safely open, as deemed by Patrol, Lift Mechanics, Groomers and other mountain operation folks, it opens. Team members out on the mountain always are in the best position to use their professional discretion to assess lifts & terrain. Decisions about when to open, and what to open, do not originate in an office or a board room. They originate with the patrol leaders for terrain, and with the lift mechanics for lifts, based on the most up to date information, on the mountain. You would not want it any other way. Safety and readiness guide the actions of patrol and lift maintenance, not management directives about when to open terrain. There is simply no other narrative. There’s no such thing as money hold. There’s no such thing as holding terrain. If the hard-working and professional men and women out on the mountain call in and say terrain can open, we open. If they say it cannot open due to conditions or weather, or other factors, we don’t open. When we say that terrain is “scheduled” it is not a guarantee that the terrain will open; it is a promise that we have brought the staff and material that is necessary to open and operate that terrain, if it becomes safe and possible. Lifts are closed or taken off the schedule when we have assessed that operations won’t be safe or possible.
After this massive 23 foot storm, can we all take a step back from our keyboards and phones and remember why we’re all here? Why are YOU here? We only come back to one thing: the simple fact that skiing and snowboarding here is FUN. We hope you agree. We look forward to sharing the stoke with you here, and at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

I totally understand about them being sensitive about operations this week; Granite Chief and Headwall and other non-openings are very understandable if it's true they aren't allowed to use hand charges until the investigation is closed. Or if they are short staffed on patrol due to some folks needing to take some time away from the mountain. But to use that to try to gloss over their operational problems going on half a decade now is a joke.
I don't ski squaw often but I found that post laughable. Using the timing is pretty weak on their part. If they had just come out and said "we are a business and we make operational and staffing decisions to make a profit" that would have been fine. But to try and harp on people's emotions to try and push their narrative is pretty pathetic. Maybe if people look past the BS and vote with their wallet things might change.

I don't usually post, but i have to say that Squaw management rant is incredibly condescending. And they basically are blaming the skiers/boarders for what is clearly a lack of patrollers and other workers--they KNOW this was a big storm, but didn't hire enough employees so they could make profits. As you all say, come out and be honest with the people, instead of being condescending (as if we're all stupid) and blaming US for why THEY have a problem (lack of staff to deal with a big storm year--this is not the first storm this season...)
