I would make about 400 turns getting down that thing.
Thanks, guys. If someone had shown me that photo before the trip and asked, "Do you think you'll get to ski something like this?" I would have said NFW.
It has been inspiring to watch the lifestyle creep associated with your new job happen in real time. Looking forward to the TR for next year.
No shit!
The POV made it seem not very steep (the speed DTM was going was the only thing that gave a hint). The first pic made it seem insanely steep. The most recent pic gives the best view of it, that it is steep AF but skiable, like, I could ski it. But yeah, I would have made 400 turns.
I was just alerted to the gohoe footy. well skied, dtm, and way to represent maggotdom. looking forward to digging into this thread more, you rock.
DTM is still turned up to 11 and it's been over a week since he's skied that bluebird day. I love watching him relive this through his pictures.
Please keep this thread going because when I tell you how happy this has made him, it's absolutely the truth.
There is no question he will go back and use his credit hours to fly next spring. I demand he goes!
Edit: wait until you see his entire edit of all the footage he got. It's going to be be pretty epic...for a regular guy who works all week and skis only weekends, but also makes fitness a priority ;)
Looking at the second pic a bit closer, if you look at where you can see the horizon on the left it appears that it may actually be a bit reverse Skidog-ed. Regardless, while it is definitely steep, if you can ski Upper Cirque at Snowbird comfortably, especially in sub-optimal conditions, you could definitely ski that line in those conditions. It's just about 20x longer than that first pitch in the Cirque. I can't say I ever felt it in my legs on that run. Certainly some of that is being in good ski shape and gallons adrenaline, but that snow feels sooo effortless to ski. AK skiing is also done at much lower elevations than UT/CO/MT/WY and the extra O2 is definitely noticeable.
It's nice to see "Old DTM" still taking/and landing airs in style.
Awesome thread - saving it for when I finally go heliskiing. Glad you got the goods, DTM!
This thread and talking to Dan warms my cockles.
I couldn't resist un-Skidogging the pic.

Could you draw your line on the picture?

Cool trip and thread. Couldn't have happened to a more deserving person.
We got dropped off on the little ledge looker's left of the pointy peak. We skied down to the little col left and below from there, which is where the POV vid starts. Skied fall line almost down to the choke, then bumped looker's right into the next slot where you can see the spines that I aired.
Pretty crazy to compare how big that bottom spine looks in the video to how tiny it looks in that shot.

Thanks!
Great, I can see it now

Finally put the full trip edit together. It's missing some sweet drone footage from Comstock I'm waiting to get from one of the other folks on the trip, but I had some time so decided to crank this out anyway.

rippin! glorious DTM
Right on! I'm sure you're addicted now! To quote some fellow skier in the Valdez Best Western bar after my first day in the Chugach, "Heli-skiing AK is like crack. Once you do it, you spend every waking minute thinking about when you can do it again."
Awesome rippin Vid DTM!!

Well, that was fun to watch. Nice edit, looks like a repeat is in order.
It will be even better next time when you have the dual go pros AND the contour action cam.
Til then keep one toe raised and pointed towards Alaska.
Heh, the other client in the ship with me was fond of saying that heli skiing is hard drugs. I'd guess around 15k. We did eight runs total. The first run was not really a real run, more of a "Let's see if you can get in and out of the heli without being a danger to yourself and others" test, so seven real runs. The first couple were on the shorter side since they had received 100 cms of new snow and understandably needed to work their way up to bigger terrain (others ops had some significant slides and a partial burial the same day, so the caution was warranted).
We also started a bit late, about 11:30, since there was still some high milk lingering around in the morning. With slightly better conditions a 20k+ day is very possible. I BELIEVE
Fight like Hell!!
Has anyone noticed issues with the YouTube video quality? I just watched it via the link for the first time and despite showing as being 1080 HD it looked like junk.
Looked good to me, the soundtrack however, meh. Pump it Up.
DTM, what skis were you on? Would you change anything with regards to that?
Sweet!!!
Love the stoke, well done.
Not here. Clear af.

Looks fine to me. YT auto-selected 720p, but I was able to choose 1080p and it played fine from there
