Who's driving a VW AllTrack?

They've always been garbage? The Golf is VW's top performer in Consumer Reports. It does pretty well. VW over all was 24 of 26 though this year. Dragged down by the Atlas. Golf's body leaks are the biggest issue.

35k on my18. My intermittent wipers don't work properly. Need to get that module fixed under warranty but really not in a hurry so I'll wait till after I get my vaccine to have what is an unnecessary human contact. It maybe uses a tiny bit of water. I bought a gallon of VW premix just to keep it exactly on the lines so I can monitor the level because of the known leaky water pump issue that develops on some of them.. If I wasn't watching it closely it wouldn't have needed to be filled since new.

Otherwise. It is has been great. Uses no oil. No interior fogging or leaks.

I'm most likely a long hauler. Will be bolting parts on it till it rusts to shit and beyond unless I move to electric for cost/environmental/regulatory reasons. Long after all of you guys have moved on I'll be pissing and moaning about it. Give me ten years and I'll know more about VW's than I want to. Like Subies now.

These are from my brand new CR for 2021 model predictions, but they base on past years performance. They are no Toyota, and more so as they age, but my 18 has been more reliable than my 02 Outback to this point. The Subie with 250k on it has proven easy to wrench and cost effective to keep running Our 12 Prius with 180k still hasn't had anything break though, except for the deer that went through the front end wrecking the evap and radiator. Much more complicated to work on, but nothing out of hand.

Same here... no sunroof!!

No sunroof, no condensation issues but I live in Tahoe. 26k miles, zero issues.

There’s an outfit in UK that does exhaustive data mining on repair rates and this generation Golf scored well.

I put 150K on our 10 TDI and so far 70K on the Alltrack. Quality has been pretty good. We have 170K on the 08 Yukon. IMHO, Asian cars aren't as good as they used ot be and Euro and American cars are better than they used to be...the playing field has leveled.

I agree the downhill assist is really cool and works really well even with the manual. Had a blast with it in Montana. So cool just to focus on steering...which a lot is required because it really isn't very capable off road. Our 03 4R has it but it has never worked properly but you kind of just point and forget most of the time anyway.

Not sure I follow — will it go faster than a slow controlled creep? I have a manual alltrack.

Also, what racks are people running? Both yakima and Thule seem to be sold out because COVID.

It helps with engine braking when set on off-road driving mode. If you come to a complete stop on way down it drags. But otherwise is awesome. Just be sure when you get to bottom of hill you set back to normal driving mode.

I’m running Thule aeroblade flush mount and it is awesome. Was not cheap but no road noise at 75 is priceless. Not sure on exact part number but looks like this

Yak timberline with the slim line metal bars (what those are called I dunno). I have timberline towers with my old round bars.

Thanks to you both. The timberline is what I was looking at, just out of stock still. And yes, need something aero so no wind noise. Will look forward to getting the AT wet, so to speak, soon. Snow tires any day now and will play with the off-road mode.

We went with the factory branded bars to give more space for washing the roof.

Alway read about VW reliability issues, on our 4th and 5th vw including a 17 Alltrack and a 14 tdi sportwagon. Love the alltrack it’s a light feeling confident driving car with good get up and go. I like the diesel but the golf wins for comfort driving ease and looks and electronics. We have not had any issues that weren’t common maint and repair or mechanic stupidit I over half a million miles.

I'm enjoying our Alltrack. I was always in TDIs but needed the AWD and been happy with it so far. I'm way more confident driving in slippery conditions in the Alltrack than in my Tacoma provided the snow isn't more than a couple inches deep. I find the balance to be on point and it's a light ride but confidently retains traction, plus the center diff seems pretty smart in how it applies power. Only thing I don't like is the automatic transmission I find it gets super hung up especially in the low gears and chugs a lot (I've noticed this in multiple Alltracks, not just ours). If we hadn't gotten this one so cheap I would've spent some more time looking for a manual

My experience was positive. I picked up 3.5 mpg and my alltrack eats hills like a street bike now.

So far so good. I don't think I would have stuck with it without the extra power. I only have ~40000 miles but already looking at the is20 upgrade and an intercooler. Still upset they didn't bring the R wagon over to the US.

Same here, enough torque to pull sub-2,000 RPM in 6th gear now, I've gotten 40 mpg driving at the speed limit. At the other end, I can pull 90mph going up the pass now (don't ask about the mileage).

Is20 is kinda like going down the rabbit hole... intake, down pipe, new program .... performance would be fun... but pretty spendy to get there!

I've got a 2" hitch on ours but haven't towed yet. I'd be comfortable up to 2000lbs, which should cover the Scamp.

Re: voided warranty I confirmed with a friend who runs a VW dealership that they'd only ever decline warranty service on a car with a hitch if the issue was directly related to a problem caused by the hitch or towing. VW says it technically voids the warranty but he couldn't think of a scenario where any dealer would deny service just on principle

Been lurking in this thread for a bit. I owned a Jetta III (K2 Edition) and absolutely loved the car, but it ate parts and rusted out. Trying to rationalize an Alltrac as it checks all the boxes (wagon, manual, and awd) except hp which seems a bit low. Lots of feedback on the usual vw quality issues. I like to buy new and keep them for a while...10 years? Are most people dumping these at 100k, or dumping big $ into them and going long?

alltrack was only available from '17-'19, so probably not many with 100k miles

Serious WTF question. Bought 2019 s based on recommendation from skiers here and on other sites. Replaced my awesome Volvo XC70 with 250k on it. But there is a problem. I live in Iowa so we don’t get near the snow that a lot of you get but if I get more than 3 inches of snow here, the wheel wells get completely packed in behind the wheels with snow. The whole damn car vibrates driving anything over 40 miles an hour. What are you guys doing for this problem. Are you running 16 inch snow tires? Are you using a pressure washer car wash every freaking day. This is driving me bonkers. The ice gets packed in there so good, it’s the size of a big book.

I don't think the build up of crap in the wheel well's is causing the vibration issue. It's most likely the ice or debris build up on the inside of the rims. The centrifugal force sets it up firmly in there. Hose it out thoroughly.

I run 16 (215/60/16) nokian with rockblocz and a lot of folks use rally armor. No issues with mud flaps.
205/60/16 would be fine also. I agree if any snow build up in wheel vibration will happen. Good luck

My son's has 215/60 16 Hakkapolita 9s on steelies with factory mud guards. Never had a problem but it is parked in a heated garage most nights and I got him an unlimited pass at the car wash down the street so it stays pretty clean. Saw a perfect (looked like it was brand new) silver XC70 yesterday at the hill, those were/are really good cars.

I thought about getting the car wash subscription and would love to do that. However, I run a Thule box on top and they can’t run it through the car wash.

Our carwash allows the boxes on roofs.

It's the tire bouncing off the compressed snow in the tire wells as the suspension works . . . I was getting it last week in Seattle with a ton of wet snow packed in my wheelwells. Usually in the mountains and colder temps it's not a problem.

I also run 16 inch Hakka R3's . . .

I have a TDI Mk7 and live in Ottawa Ontario. I've had no issues like this, running 15" winter wheels. Maybe throw some car wax onto the inside of the wheel so the snow doesn't stuck (assuming that's what's causing the vibration)?

OK gotcha. I think we were confused by the ‘vibration’ term, since that normally refers to rotational vibrations, not clearance issues aka ‘rubbing’. I think this thread has discussed previously the 16” rims and snow tires many alltrack users run, but the OD of the tire and net clearance is the usually the same as stock (unless you downsize intentionally).

Since these wheel wells are already plastic covered, I’m not sure what to suggest. Silicone spray in the morning like I do in my snowblower chute? Audis etc all generally have modest wheel well clearance to improve aerodynamics and aesthetics.

I downsized intentionally and the speedometer is a bit optimistic, but there is more clearance.

We're running 16's with 215/60 R16 as well, but still get lots of ice pack up here. My wife drives it and most miles are on wet highway or soft/slush in town, with minimal melt while parked. It rubs a lot, but nothing too bad. I try to clear it with a few soft kicks, but it seems to work it's way out eventually. This is one of her biggest complaints about the car, but not a deal breaker.

Also: she got sideswiped on a hit-and-run while skiing two weeks ago. Goddamn $1500 out of our pocket, but car should look pretty nice when done. People suck.

I never have learned how to fix the snow packing problem. I had it w/ my Audi 100, A4, and all my BMW’s. Not the Allroad, though w/ the extra clearance. Garage (warmth), fixes it usually, but I smash at it w/ the snow scraper every time I stop for gas, etc. I was suggested PAM, but haven’t used it, and don’t want it on the brakes etc.

Now that I think about it, the regular golf uses a smaller wheel diameter so that could be why I don't have the issue.

You'd think the higher suspension would help but here we are.
