Now, the Yankee kryptonite is flaking and the Yankees' universe is upside down despite taking two of three from the Red Sox.
Yesterday for the second straight game Rivera blew a save against the Red Sox. Unlike Tuesday, this one cost the Yankees a victory and a three-game sweep of their blood rivals. Instead the Yankees absorbed a 7-3 loss that was low-lighted by Rivera being booed for the first time at Yankee Stadium.
Sure, Alex Rodriguez botched a game-ending double play ball in the ninth. And the Yankees were held to four hits. But Rivera walked an unheard of three and gave up three hits in two-thirds of an inning. Four of the five runs were unearned thanks to A-Rod's boot. That led to Joe Torre walking to the mound and removing the Hall of Fame lock.
Torre did that last Sept. 4 at the Stadium when Rivera was brought into a game versus the Orioles with the Yankees trailing, 2-0, and gave up four hits and four runs in one-third of an inning.
As strange as watching Rivera leave was, what followed was even more rare. When Rivera took his first step toward the Yankee dugout he was booed by many in the crowd of 55,165.
