A very good friend of mine, in a very senior role at McL:aren described Alonso as:
Pure Poison.
Mclaren hired him because he was the best driver out there, the whole team had a @don't let the door hit you in the arse on your way out@ when he left after one season.
I'm told that he alienated everyone from the top of the team to the bottom.

4th place in the constructors championship might be worth as much as tens of $millions more than 5th place.
Almost all the employees and drivers would have bonuses tied to championship placing.
Sponsorship deals and contracts with suppliers also connected to it. A contract Pirelli tires had with it's few back marker teams that I saw in the early nineties was over a hundred pages long, most of it dealing with exactly this stuff.

look at how tight-lipped barichelo is about his ferrari years. he's let slip a couple of times that there are juicy stories to tell and that he was quite unhappy with his treatment there, but he'll save all of this for his memoirs.
Payback is a bitch. Flavio Briatore is not only banned from F1 but banned from any involvement with any FIA-sanctioned motorsport. It might have happened anyway, but his involvement with the renegade alliance probably sealed his fate.
Two-year suspended ban for Renault over Singapore conspiracy
At the meeting of the World Motor Sport Council, Renault F1 made the following points in mitigation:
- it had accepted, at the earliest practicable opportunity, that it committed the offenses with which it was charged and cooperated fully with the FIA’s investigation;
- it had confirmed that Mr. Briatore and Mr. Symonds were involved in the conspiracy and ensured that they left the team;
- it apologized unreservedly to the FIA and to the sport for the harm caused by its actions;
- - it committed to paying the costs incurred by the FIA in its investigation; and
- Renault (the parent company, as opposed to Renault F1) committed to making a significant contribution to FIA safety-related projects.
Nelson Piquet Jr. also apologized unreservedly to the World Motor Sport Council for his part in the conspiracy. And Nelson Piquet Jr. is still a whiny little bitch for being a whistleblower only after he didn't get his way... waaaah.
Good ruling.
But shows up the absurdity of the fine McLaren got hit with.
All the coverage I've read seems to have overlooked how close Piquet Sr is with both Ecclestone and Mosely and how he and Briatore had issues during the time he was driving for Benetton in 90/91.

What a crock, deliberately crashing a car so as to be able to win a race merits a two year suspended exclusion. Reading another teams technical doucuments to gain a 'possible', never proven that there was one, technical advantage got a 1 year suspended exclusion and a 100 million dollar fine. And Flavio is gone for ever, without actually being able to appear before the FIA to defend himself. And not allowing him to manage any F1 drivers, or participate in any FIA sanctioned events. Methinks a lawsuit regarding a non judicial entity removing his right to make a living, is looming. ANyone else think this is Max's last kick at Flavio for heading up the FOTA talk of a breakaway series?
And giving Piquet Jr. immunity despite deliberately causing the crash? Only saving grace on that is that most likely he is gone from F1 permanently anyways.
It appears it just wouldn't be F1 without a major political screw-up every year.

It's weird how that is the perception people take out of the Hamilton/Alonso episode.
They seem to forget that it was Hamilton that threw his toys out of the pram first At Monaco about team orders against him and then set off the incident that led to Alonso giving him the pit box hold up treatment in Hungary.
He probably is a deeply shitty individual. You probably have to be to get to that level. But he's without a doubt the best driver on the grid, Hamilton maybe a close second perhaps eventually he'll be even better. But at the moment he's the best. I doubt you'd find a single person actually involved in F1 who would disagree.
