Kirkwood 12/21
It could be a helluv a lot worse. It hasn't been freezing so at least the turns come easy in the soft snow. Been foolin around with the 6 year old under chair 10 and on Zach's , Sentinel, etc. Skier-packed and almost spring like slush are in abundance. A nice t-storm blew through mid-afternoon closing the lifts for a while. As it got dark the slush and frozen rain that was falling gave way to some heavy snow in the valley. 3-4" acumulation on the road right now, but damn it still feels warm out. Must be good higher up?!
These two don't seem to mind the conditions.

WTF? It changed from snow to rain? goddamned it, this storm was supposed to blow in warm with decreasing temps!

Last weekend I was thinking about how much it sucked that I wouldn't be able to go skiing this week with all these storms rolling in. Now I'm not so sad anymore, but rain at Kirkwood still sucks.

I'll be at KW tomorrow, either on Explosivs or Scratch FSs, black helmet (with Squaw, KW, AM stickers on it). Blue Arcteryx or weird beige colored TNF jacket. If you see me, and I aint too much of a gaper for you, yell at me...

Um, yep. I was up in the middle of the night = rain.
Currently raining in the valley.
The road is one big puddle.
I can see the top of Norm's Nose and there is no snow in the trees there.
Kirkwood is saying 12-24" at the top, I'd be surprised, though the are throwing a ton of bombs.
I.E. - You probably won't read this, but I'll be out skiing at some point today and I'll look out for you.

I've been watching the Mt Rose updates this morning -- wind hold on the two main chairs. They just added this: "Expecting Wind Speed to Increase - We May Experience Wind Holds on Primary Lifts" -- they don't HAVE any other primary lifts, just the two 6-pack chairs.
I guess I have to go to work then... maybe head out this afternoon if the winds die down instead of increasing.
Definitely taking tomorrow off & going to Mt Rose, since I won't get any skiing this weekend with family arriving tomorrow afternoon.

Squaw's website says they're closed, top to bottom.
Alpine's website says Roundhouse and Hot Wheels are open, Scott and Summit are on hold. More telling, perhaps, is that the cam shot is still yesterday at 4:15pm.

Rain Runnels on the snowpack at 9,000 feet on rose this morning at 8am.

this is so depressing......let's just hope that this cold one blows in early next week and makes us all forget about what a hell'ish week this has been. I was just thinking, if this was an all snow event this week, it would have rivaled last year in terms of dumpage.

Funny you say that...I have an Aussie friend there right now, and the email I got last week from him said:
"The deepest, driest, powder I've skied in my whole life."
Mind you, this is coming from a guy that has been skiing year round for some time now.

I wouldn't be surprised judging by how hard it rained yesterday, if it snowed that hard at the wood then it woulda been deep. of course the rain isnt doing that 2ft any good right now.

My wife told me that the fax they got at 5:55 am from Alpine Meadows at the Radio station she works at reported 41 degrees, rain and 50mph winds. That's not good.

this am they had reported 12-24" in the last 24 hours and then changed it to 4-8" later in the morning. Gotta love the rain.
