I'm sorry, but I still refuse to admit that Tito is anything better than a "B-" as a manager.

I was at game 5 against the Yankees and it was one of the most incredible games I've seen in my entire life. That said, Francona made about 10 of the most questionable decisions I can remember from a manager in a must-win game. Only luck kept the Sox from losing with Wake on the mound and Tek watching pitch after pitch scoot to the backstop.

PS: too bad there's a no posting during the game rule :biggrin:

I hear ya chirpin big bird. was at game three ALCS and had a stroke when they pulled Lowe, who in my opinion was doing just fine. the Pedro "who's your daddy?" inning in NY flipped my lid as well. basom must have "ragecalled" Francona, he ws rushed to the hospital with chest pains. we'll let him keep his job for another week.

I think the Red Sox fans are more obsessed with beating the Yankees than they are about winning the World Series. Yankees fans could give a flying shit about beating the Sox... they're just another team in the road to global domination.

if you havent noticed. their road to global domination was washed out by a landslide five years ago. each year since then they have spent more and more money on engineering, to bridge this problematic section of road (aka the 21 century), only to see it all wash out again before they can pack the minivan and contuine on.

and i think the yankees fans, at least the twenty or so that i know well that live in NYC, have a different feeling about their team redeeming themselves after the biggest choke in sports history. they are proud, and they got hurt (maybe not you, but these guys actually felt pain after the reverse sweep), and now they want more than ever to put that behind them and beat boston at every turn. sure they want to beat other teams too, as do sox fans. but they know out of the last nine apearence by Mariano against the red sox he has blown six saves. three for the last nine. now i just call up my yankee friends and hum enter sandman and start laughing. and they get angry. the MVP of their team, their ace in the hole, the man with ice in his viens, the best closer of all time, has been pretty much owned by the red sox in the last ten games that were in control by the yankees going into the ninth. this has never happend to him before.

Dont' get too excited Boston fans... Rivera will be fine. On the other hand, you MAY want to worry about your starting rotation. Wells- bad back and he's losing his stuff. Clement- can't find the plate, but I'll admit he's got great stuff. Schilling- who knows? Wakefield and Arroyo- do you really want to depend on these guys to take you to the playoffs? Miller- he's out for a long time. Get back to me about Rivera in July when he's mowing them down like usual. He was hurt in spring training and only got about 5 innings in before yesterdays BS.

And Basom... money can't be an issue with the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry, since the Sox are right behind them in second. They both get who they want...

Any way you slice it, its the best rivalry in sports and the argument can go on forever.

PS: Bronson "Death Wish" Arroyo makes his season debut against the BJays tomorrow. The kid's gonna surprise a lot of people this year. IMO he's the real #3 starter unless Wade Miller can work his way back to top form. With the Sox lineup, Bronson should be able to win 14+ games if he can just deliver solid 6 inning starts and keep the ERA under 4.00

did i bring up any payroll comparison? i dont think so. in fact, i know i didn't.

boston: wanted a-rod. goes to new york.
boston: wanted unit. goes to new york.
boston: wanted pavano. goes to new york.
boston: wanted radke. he stays put in minnesota.

sure, the sox have the money and ability to pick up great talent in the off season or mid season. as i'm sure they will have to do again this year (sheets! get us sheets!). but if you think for a second that the yankees dont have more to offer those highest calibre players then you are insane. boston just doesnt offer those types of contracts. Theo will not overpay, while stiney loves to make a mockery of the market value and gives guys extra years all the time. boston does have a large payroll, but its still 57 mil less than the yankees, lets not forget (that difference is larger than the padres, rangers, twins, and orioles entire payroll, not to mention the other less competitive teams).

57 million is the equivilant of four extra curt Shilling/Manny calibre ballplayers. or 9.5 extra David Ortiz calibre players. or 5 extra Edgar Rentierias. do you comprehend the difference?

derek lowe was a starter, then a closer, then a starter.

Will not overpay? Manny Ramirez is making $20mil+ per year. If that's not overpaying, I don't know what is. All baseball players are overpaid.

well, the way his contract is structured its not 20 mill a year, but it is this year. that is above market value, but theo had nothing to do with that contract, and he has been systematicly eliminating them. you dont think he wanted to trade manny when he had the chance? you forget that manny would have been out the door if the players association would have ok'd the a-rod deal, thats what theo wanted. to dump crazy contracts. notice no more pedro. he wanted too many years. no more lowe. he wanted too many years. no more nomar. he refused a four year 60 mill deal (that was overpaying, theo's one exception offer to date) becasue he wanted more years.

giving players a bunch of money for a one or two year deal is much different than giving them a bunch of money for six years.

the red sox are being smart now about keeping their money flexible for the future, so they can make moves mid season, or down the road. for the yankees it simply does not matter. George does not care if he has to give someone six years and an untradeable contract. he runs his buisness very differently than any other team.

you can disagree with me all you want and tell me the red sox are run the same way as the yankees and thay have the same philosophy on signing players and market value. but the facts show that you do not have full understanding of the yankee organization or the red sox organization.

He pitched better than his record last year. Remember one of this losses was the one hitter Schmidt pitched against him in San Fran. Giants won 1-0.

Never once did I say the Sox run their organization the same way as the Yankees. I said the Sox spend a lot of money like the Yankees- not the Sox spend their money the same way as the Yankees. I understand the difference. The financial argument of baseball is another issue altogether, one which I will not get into because its not worth the time- since nothing is going to change any time soon.

And to quote Tony Kornheiser, who hates the Yankees and the Sox (in response to someone else who said no one outside of Boston and NY cares about the rivalry): When the Yankees play the Red Sox and every game goes down to the last inning, with such compelling theatre, that's as good as sports in this country gets.

bronson would be in the top third of the rotation if he could develop one more pitch. he's got a good curve and slider. and his four seam is strong enough that if he developed a solid change he would be pretty hard to deal with for most hitters.

besides wells he is the best guy on the staff at keeping runners on base.

last year he was 8-2 after july 1st, and his era during that time was around 3.5. pretty damn good. hopefully he can just pick up where he left off, but i've heard several opinions that he may have a hangover season. with only three pitches and a solid book out on him now he may be fairly easy for some teams to solve. i hope that is not the case.
