Flats suck, and sidewall cut flats often require that you put in a tube. For general use sidewall protection is not optional, IMO.

Agreed 100%, not worth the grams saved, even on rotating weight, it pains me to say that, but it’s true.
I’m shopping for a gravel bike. I’m 6’1” so prob 56cm or 58cm (L frame)
Want: Carbon frame, ability for gear mounts on the fork, and accommodate 50mm tires.
Would like to spend $2000 or less.
Anyone?

Carbon for under 2K.....that's your limitation right there. You can easily get what you want within your budget if you go steel or alu with decent components. Up the budget a bit to get full carbon. Niner RLT Steel fits the bill & has carbon fork, fits up to 50c.
I think the best deal going is Intense's gravel bike through Costco. It was mentioned a few pages back and gets you full carbon with GRX 2x. 45 is the max tire size however from what could find, it comes with 40.

Haven't looked at Fizzari much up until this year, I'm seeing more on the roads. Dang that's a good deal for the Shafer Comp GRX- carbon, fork mounts, and tire clearance up to 50.

wow. that Shafer Comp GRX build is really hard to beat for price. If you consider steel, AL in that price range... take a hard look at Jamis Renegade. The S2 steel fits 50mm tires I think. Buddy is loving his.
I’m looking at a bike in the same price range but having a hard time justifying it with a karate monkey that does everything but comes with weight.
Is Canyon a respected name? I saw a friends canyon mtb frame crack after a weeks worth of use but know all brands can have their issues.
This Grizl is under 2k: https://www.canyon.com/en-us/gravel-...sl-6/3243.html
Lauf has some decent pricing going on: https://www.laufcycling.com/product/lauf-seigla
Canyon makes good gravel bikes and they are hard to beat on price.

Anybody here have a Lauf fork? I was considering one for my single speed. I just thought it’d have too little rebound damping.
Mrs P and I had a nice ride yesterday including a little single track.

The map showed this as a class 4 road but clearly it had been abandoned a long time ago.

Instead of hike a bike over downed trees and through the wet slop, we turned around and found some other dirt roads to connect through to our original route.

Found some gravel on our CA trip
The fatbike test of interest is refrozen footsteps from people hiking in the snow. That’s like riding washboard on a dirt road. Anyway it works pretty well. Better than I expected.
Sweet, thanks.
Twice now my front wheel has started getting a bit loose over the course of multiple rides, probably 400 miles between both instances. Thru axle, carbon fork (Kona Libre if that matters). Is this just something to check occasionally? Anything to do to make sure it doesn't happen? Never had it happen with my MTB, but it has a different type of axle.
Maybe just give it an extra unga dunga next time you tighten it. Unless you're using a long wrench you won't go overboard.
Superbloom continues here.Attachment 465053Attachment 465055
Outstanding view
^^^ great pic, view
I’m spending next week on Cape Cod in Eastham, MA, and planning on doing lots of early morning rides. Does anyone have experience/feedback regarding the unpaved roads on the east side of Eastham/Welfleet/Truro? I’m trying to figure out whether 32mm road tires would be adequate.
I’d also ask this in the EC bike thread.

My riding companions kept voting for the singletrack option, so this one was mostly trail. Flowers are still firing up high.
It was also mag Patches's first "gravel" ride on his bike, for which he mixed matching drank.Attachment 465621Attachment 465622Attachment 465623Attachment 465624

Best bang for buck gravel wheelset? 700c 11 speed 25ish inner rim width.
Can we assume:
-Tubeless comparable
-12x142, 12x100 axle standard
-disc brake
- HG or XD freehub?
What is your price range?
I’d buy DT Swiss GR 1600: 24mm, 350 hubs, easy to service freehubs in both HG or XD and easily upgraded to Micro or XDR in the future, quality brand name spokes and nipples, great customer service, but I’m not sure if a $760 set is considered best bang to you.
Yes to the specs. HG. XD just means I need a new 11 speed xd cassette or is it more complicated? My front is a QR fork, but thought I could just add an adapter sleeve or updated cups to get to 100x9
I just missed out on a set of lightly used Dt240s laced to velocity rims that I was considering . I don't really ride this bike that much though...
Want a Spinergy GX wheelset? I have a set collecting dust I'd let go cheap.
Its a mixed bag. I was just down there last week. In the past, I've wallowed through "roads" which are car width wide paths through dunes (near White Crest Beach), but last week I found a few good sections that parallel Rt6 between Truro and Wellfleet. Im on 38mm tires, and that was tougher. I think you'll be better off sticking to the roads and bike paths rather than a whole lot of adventure gravel.
Anyone want to recommend me a frameset? I was going to get a Crust Evasion Lite as it ticks the boxes for me but not wild about the current color. Requirements:
- steel
- carbon fork or if steel not a boat anchor? Flexible on this point
- fits 27.5 x 2.3+ but would still work fine with 650 x 48 slicks for mellower gravel.
- around 1500 usd or less.
Use case is the dirt roads out my door plus rougher bike packing trips into the nearby national forest but still mostly “roads.”
All City Gorilla Monsoon
Kona Rove DL
Marin Nicassio
We did a S27O shakedown cruise this weekend in anticipation for a week long tour in mid-August. Mrs P is all for “bike touring” but doesn’t want to go “bike packing”. 🤪
Fine lunch spot along a dirt road.

Addison County got 6” of rain about 36 hours before our trip. Every river looked like YooHoo.

We were happy to have a lean-to at the campground since the ground was spongy everywhere you went. Trailers were getting bogged down and several campsites had evidence of spinning tires leaving mud stripes in the lawn.
It was a nice evening to sit on the shoreline.

Those panniers fit a lot more than my bikepacking bags so why not bring the french press?

Total trip was 27 hours, just under 85 miles, and 5100’. It felt leisurely.
