One time I was coming down and got behind Selkowitz on his roadie and just followed him with some buffer space. At the Elliot cemetery he's doing 40mph easily and a deer darts across the road. He barely flinched. Just enough to suggest a need for some fresh shorts.




I saw a news bit last night that showed a drone fly over. The inside radius of the turn has already been regraded and my money says they just infill the inside radius down towards the trees and make a newer turn in the bank. Shoring the outside of the curve will be the feat of engineering.
Nothing new about that road. Never seen any work on that section, nor any of that side to any real extent; maybe lower down a decade ago but not much, mostly fixing rockslide damage.
That road takes a daily and seasonal pounding. I'd say it performs pretty well, 95% of the time.

Remains to be seen if that tree that's bent (from the slide wayback when) right as the turn begins downhill has fallen away. It's historical.

I believe the issue is there's a fault line there. It's where the north end of the Wyoming thrust belt runs into the Teton block. That's something I was told long ago. Don't know if that info is correct but you can clearly see on googleearth that the entire north side of that ridge is slumping. The bent tree is evidence of the resulting slope creep.

Fatal flaw: the collapsed causeway, which is just earthen fill, is sited on an unstable slope.

Skied Jackson Peak yesterday with a large group as part of a bday celebration. Hiked the trail to snow line then skinned around and up from the southeast.

To our surprise there were quite a few people up top when our group arrived, total somewhere around 20. Bluebird with perfect temps up high.

There was a small puff of smoke coming from somewhere south of the top of Granite Creek that we witnessed grow in size in just 30 minutes or so while at the top. Wonder if that particular fire contributed to the smell of smoke on my Ferrins ride this morning, which was strongish.

The north facing terrain skied quite well and allowed for some real fall line turns.

I was thinking of having a permanent lemonade stand at the end of your road,( something tells me SV won’t let us sling cold beers), Teleee! Maybe fire up grilled cheese sandos too. Hell…traffic will be moving slow enough to hit every car slightly before the evening hatches.

Rough spot for a lot of people. I wish there was an easier solution.

I feel bad for my friends that live out at Red Top, that’s gonna be a disaster.
I bet the County Cops patrol the shit out of it.

There are going to be some issues out there as cars approach Pritchard pass. Thought about that today. Higher use with some travel from the other side will force extra erosion on the banks. That stretch isn’t meant to handle car after car moving toward the creek. Camps back there will be overloaded too.

Come out for heuvos V2 some morning. Your ride back to town will be easy.

Let’s do it in a week or two, I haven’t tried the huevos under new ownership.

Depending on what happens, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if WYDOT wanted the FS to pave it as an alternate route if this ever happened again. Or if the Snake River/Wilson bridge went out somehow.

EDIT: I am still awake at 3:20, I was just thinking that we really, really need to send vibes to the wildfire gods this year. If something torches up on the pass, it could get really hairball with such limited capacity to get crews from either/both sides.

I was thinking coffee in the morning and cold beer in the evening at my road side stand, grilled cheese would be a fantastic addition.

Just a quick unofficial update. There is a geologic event that is larger than the road fill itself, but shouldn't affect too much more of the road than it already has. They are currently working on a detour around the slope failure that will open the road back up sooner than later. You won't be able to travel at 55 through it, but it is only for a short stretch. The old alignment fix will be in the order of months best case.

Doing 55 over the pass is a rarity anymore anyways as people just cannot fucking do the speed limit.

Sounds like Neckdeep hit it pretty close. Those funky dimensional maps you posted really alter the actual slope angles. Kinda cool seeing the distance from top to slide in one shot.

That Pedestrian bridge at Wilson is horribly overwrought and needs to be redone. Cripes the one over the Gros Ventre is way nicer.

Pretty tough to expect a filled slope built on what is a geologically unstable mountain side to last for 50 years no matter how well it is built.
And yep Woody nailed it hard to convince Wyoming voters to spend money on more taxes to fix a road to an area that most feel is filled with outsiders and interlopers.

The Pass didn't even have guard rail until about 20 years ago. It was never intended to carry its current passenger traffic load. The primary function of the pass was originally for freight because Victor was the closest rail terminus to Jackson. When hwy 22 was completed, jhole had fewer than 3000 residents. It was such a backwater that it never even had a railroad and most people headed to Yellowstone went in through the west or north.

So let me get this straight, the plan is to just build a bypass right next to it on the same failing ground, on the first major incline / curve? Yeah that isn't great. Even if it doesn't continue to fail, even with a weight limit those Subarus aren't getting momentum back.

Yea I’ll be interesting to see exactly what they end up doing, but to be fair there is way more real estate on the inside of that curve than I thought.

Um....yeah.....that's the old TV. Beater Subarus (and the people who drive them) are being rapidly phased out in the new TV.

How rapidly? The owner of suesroos just decided it was good time to retire given that the new people all drive Porsches, Audis, Mercedes, or massive SUVs.

Fucking fancy cars. Man, when I got here the Cowboy Cadillac was the old school Jeep Wagoneer.

Now I see a fuckton of Range Rovers. And all of the biggest SUVS, Escalades, Navigators, Grand Wagoneers, Expeditions, Tahoes, Yukons, Suburbans.

Then there's the sportscars. Saw the Village old German guy the other day sporting his new Ferrari of some model. 911variants and Corvettes, tons of Audis and Bimmers.

Or trucks. Pickemups. like $100,000 models.

Oh, lest we forget all the newbs and Covid locals rolling their redone classics. Broncos and the like. Lotsa unique 4x4s from Europe and Asia, saw a Delica the other day.

I have a 30-year-old Pathfinder, a 12-year-old TDI VWagen and a 22 year old Motorcycle. Still plenty of us who aren't rich, nor looking to be.

But this place has dug itself into a hole such that there's not enough real local incentive to fix the issues and get the ducks in a row.

The Mother Nature side of the equation always delivers the awesomeness that is this Valley. It's the Human Nature that continuously fucks it up.

Just one dudes opinion.
